Great find, quixos, thanks, that's a cool page full of background on the app, what it is, how it's used, etc.

Living Room / Re: 43folders - nice blog on software and stuff

I heard of the 43Folders phenomenon through Lifehacker, and it seems to be the technological successor of Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. I'll take a tip from anyone. I'm so lazy I work extremely hard to find the easy way to do everything.

My first computer was not an Apple Macintosh like I wanted (thank Buddha I never got it), but a 286 PC with 512k of RAM and a 20Mb HD. The extra RAM cost me a fortune. That was in 1985 and along with a dot matrix printer, I had more fun than I'd ever had in my life. I don't have a picture, but it looks a lot like the tower I have today, only half again as big. Same color, though! Oh, and the damn thing cost me $4400, can you believe THAT?!

Backup Guide / Re: Information about Backup4all 2.3.2

Karen Kenworthy is a genius in my small world, but Kevin the two best synching apps I know are:

__(1) DirSync by ArcherSoft, which I've found to be the most accurate of all, and
__(2) SyncBack SE, which has been around for while, but is more complex.

I use DirSync to backup my shareware/freeware to a second drive each night, and then once a week copy it all onto DVD without compression. What I do compress, I use WinRAR for its solid archive and recovery abilities.

I should allow them again, but for the first four months or so I was getting a ton of comment spam from (not-so-nice) christians on every post, so I cut it off. On the next post, I will. Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Image Manager Shootout / Thanks Nudone, great review!
« Last post by zridling on July 12, 2005, 02:37 AM »
DCC has tackled some heavy software, but this review covered a lot of ground, much like the Text Editor and Email reviews. Not surprisingly, your conclusion was fair, too — that there are a couple of great programs, but several significantly good ones out there to do whatever job you need it to do for your own work. Thus, the reason why so many swear by Irfanview or lately, FastStone for example. Thanks Nudone (and mouser), as always and on behalf of other members, we're grateful for all the hard work you did!

General Software Discussion / Yet another Hotkey app!
« Last post by zridling on July 11, 2005, 09:26 PM »
Although I've moved on to AutoHotkey which does far more, HotKeyz is freeware and perhaps the best of the rest of the targeted hotkey apps. Good interface design, lots of flexibility included for creating the widest variety of hotkeys (I call them "keyboard shortcuts," although that technically applies to keys within apps), and options available to make sure your keys are accurate and unconflicted. It even does hotstrings, which is great. Check it out if you're looking for a hotkey app.

Thanks mouser, and my mom tells me I have a bad attitude! Something happened with the FeedDemon RSS reader software this past week that is extremely rare in software — a company changed its mind because users wrote in droves their wish for it to remain a standalone app. A cautionary tale about making a bad (embarrassing?) business decision right. Rare indeed.

I LOVE Website-Watcher and I noticed new RSS features there, but I've never tried them. I use it to hunt for program updates. Thanks Scott, now you just ruined my afternoon! (I'll spend it playing with Website-Watcher and RSS feeds now.)  :)

General Software Discussion / GreatNews RSS Reader
« Last post by zridling on July 08, 2005, 06:24 AM »
Always on the lookout for good new software, and found GreatNews RSS Reader just before going to bed this morning — Wow! It's fast, free, lightweight, and on the way to being really good. I wish it had more features right now, but the author reminds everyone not to panic and constantly asks for feedback. I've been looking for a replacement for FeedDemon now that Nick Bradbury sold out to NewsGator and turned it into subscriptionware. (I will never pay for subscription-based software!)

I'm so accustomed to phpBB forum software that this format took a bit to get used to. For example, after posting, it jumps you back to the forum category rather than to the topic you just posted to. The buttons I find difficult to read, and I wish the "New Topic" button was on the left of the button row rather than in the middle. However, I do like the control it gives posters. Otherwise, it seems fine.

Ha! For some folks, making money is the ultimate drug. This may sound stupid, but I've got better things to do than waste my life making money. The GoDaddy commercials in the SuperBowl were the only ones worth watching, so Bible-Bob must have some class somewhere in his genes.

Sorry for the confusion. Beta testing for version 8 should be completed in the next month or two, and I'm one of those guys. Good beta testing is so exhausting, but in this case, it's worth it if you can have an impact on a program you use daily.

General Software Discussion / QumanaLE — blogging editor
« Last post by zridling on July 07, 2005, 02:31 AM »
If you want to make blogging both simple and easy with a sleek WYSIWYG interface, check out QumanaLE. It's free and is just getting started, but has some features that BlogJet doesn't. The developers promise improvement and the Qumana blog is pretty cool. A tool like Qumana is great if you make frequent, impulsive, or daily posts to your blog.

Image Manager Shootout / Re: Xnview vs. Irfan View
« Last post by zridling on July 06, 2005, 05:06 PM »
Oddly, I've always put IrfanView in the Image Editor class, whereas I put XnView in the Image Viewer class — at least that's how I've used (or underused) them. One of IrfanView's best features is its Contact Sheet creation abilities. One of XnView's best features is its efficient file management.

ACDSee 8 does away with requiring a database altogether if you prefer. JP, I think you'll like its Smart Select option in its file manager. One of the BIG reasons I prefer ACDSee is because I can view and edit a huge number of photos very quickly. However, I use the thumbnail view (8 horizontal). When you have over 440,000 photos and movies like I do, you need something to sift through them and not choke.

Official Announcements / Re: A way you can help DonationCoder.com
« Last post by zridling on July 04, 2005, 11:13 PM »
Great idea. One nice thing about DCC reviews is that they can serve to dispel common misconceptions. For example, after the Best Text Editor review came out, few were aware that PSPad's wordwrap was still broken, and posting a link to DCC clarified that flaw.

Image Manager Shootout / Don't forget PicaJet FX and VuePrint
« Last post by zridling on July 04, 2005, 05:25 PM »
One image viewing/editing app that has some very good features, along with handy navigational elements is PicaJet FX. The free PicaJet version isn't a slouch either.

Another that I've used for years on end because of its speed and simplicity is VuePrint. My code is 1531271 if you need to fully test it. I set the Horizontal (F9) and Vertical (F10) column views to 8x8 and hit the keyboard shortcut "T" to display a contact sheet-like page of thumbnails. Or view individually by repeatedly pressing the spacebar. If you work with VuePrint's Configure Options, you can pretty much make it behave however you want. Worth including in the review since many will like it for quick views, especially over Microsoft's Picture Viewer.

Also, not that it can be controlled, but be aware that ACDSee 8 will be released in the next 2-3 months. It will include video creation (viz., VCD) along with a blog-upload/FTP feature for your photos among other things users have asked for. One clever feature is called a "burn basket," where you can just drag-n-drop photos/folders to a window, and then burn them to a CD/DVD, RAR or ZIP them, or send them via email. The Burn Basket completely eliminates the need for a third-party burning tool, and can also be used to create archives and backups of your files. When you're done, just delete the basket (they're copies anyway).

Pretty awesome.

Here's a few .gifs of keyboards and other stuff:

This last one is from Google, but it's an idea. But I think a simple drawing is better than a complex picture. At the least, it provides a layer of abstraction.

Living Room / Re: how to give out software gifts
« Last post by zridling on July 03, 2005, 04:40 AM »
I agree. As Jibz says, it may be great software, but whereas someone like me (a non-coding user) may not be able to use it, someone like you guys (coders) most likely could. Also, a targeted ad in certain blogs for a week at a time might help draw attention to some of the cool stuff happening here. For example, one of the things I look forward to most is reading the daily columns.
