General Software Discussion / Re: Why is so much software cracked?
« Last post by mouser on June 18, 2006, 02:23 PM »
yep, i think it makes a lot of sense where you guys (especially carol) are going with this.
i think the open source community is also helping to shift things in this direction.
it sort of makes some sense to me that software may move more towards being "free" out of the box (or at least very cheap), and perhaps even open source, with Support Costs being where the real money is made from companies.  People who can't afford pay support can get support (and provide support) in the free public forums.  In this way, as carol alluded too, your free users could become a valuable part of the support system to everyone.  In a sense then, you are giving the software out for free in order to create a base of users to provide support to others.

The real fly in this ointment (especially for open source tool) may be the fact that 3rd party companies may step in and offer support services, undercutting the main company and making that approach a non-viable way to profit. maybe there could be some way to solve this?

right, ok so too different things here.
superticker - wants a hotkey so he can select, hit hotkey to APPEND new selection to clipboard.
jgpaiva (and others) - want command to select a bunch of clips and merge them to one.

carol you seem to have gremlins eating your posts.. or cody is doing it!
31132
i hope the best solution has to be an existing freeware print image tool.. would be nice tool to find.

Screenshot Captor / Re: restore to original setting
« Last post by mouser on June 18, 2006, 09:17 AM »
I should make an option to restore all settings to defaultsm, but you can do this instead:
exit the program, delete the ScreenshotCaptor.ini file in Screenshot Captor directory, then restart.
31134
Also:
more testimonials/quotes are needed!

So if you want to say something about donationcoder.com, good or bad, or if you know a site where someone said something worth adding to that list of quotes (https://www.donation...om/About/quotes.html), please send it to [email protected].

if/when there are enough mac users here we could create a section for mac soft..
31140
they arent on forum page.
and some web pages dont have them - i may add them now that they are not pure ads.

but like i said, view some of the review or software pages and you should see them, like https://www.donation.../Software/index.html

let me add something:
i am in love with the new banner.

i can't quite say why, but i think it somehow captures the playful spirit of the site..
and perhaps it captures a bit of the fact that this site is a bit convoluted and it's features are not easily explained in one word.. but somehow when you look at it you kind of know it's going to be fun to discover the details.  at least that's what i see.

and i love the 2d-3d combo look, that kind of feels like an old fashioned Diorama.

here's the winning banner to save you time from visiting the main page:

Well after several months.. this contest has finally ended with a glorious winning banner - the one you see at the top of the site now.

It should come as no surprise that Nudone, who created our mascot Cody, came up with the winning design.  We had some lovely entries, and i think the interaction of testing and iterating through versions helped inspire the winning design as well.  Thank you to everyone who submitted something.

Congratulations again to nudone.

ps.
if you are a donating member your ads will turn almost completely off by default.
this effects the CodyQuotes too (because they are like an internal advertisement).

due to popular request, you can control this - so you can turn them back on (or completely off) at your pleasure.  see instructions here: https://www.donation...1228.msg8509#msg8509
31148
maybe later we can add it little trivia things, and other words of wisdom from Cody.
31149
(I'm leaving in the context-sensitive google ads on the top of the forum for now only because they can be amusing and/or relevant to topics (for now), but other than that..)

Big announcement: the website pages have been scrubbed of google ads!

now we have something very new.. CodyQuotes!

Here's a screenshot:
mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 10_22_PM , Jun 17 2006.png

The idea is to show a random little excerpt (teaser) from some of the fun (and some negative!) testimonials/quotes sent in by people.  When you click on it you can read the whole thing and other quotes - and on that page we make a pitch to donate.

The idea of replacing the ads with these are that:
  • we have more control and don't feel like suckers begging for advertising dollar pennies
  • we might even do better financially if this encourages more donations
  • they are just more fun and less obnoxious.
  • it will encourage more people to send in comments

Note: currently while testing, many pages show 2 blocks of these, one at top and one at bottom left.  I think we will make it alternate between these and not show both at same time.

Well, what do you think?
(if you are a member you might have ads turned off so you might never see them anyway).
