(also +1 on Calvin & Hobbs. Easily my all time favorite strip.)
Oh yeah.  I used to be obsessed with Calvin and Hobbes.  What a treasure.  I still very fondly remember in 4th grade my dad driving me at night to the bookstore to buy me Something Under the Bed Is Drooling that had just come out and I couldn't wait any longer to get it.  Did you ever get the complete set with the hardcovers and case?  I did, it's awesome.  I need to get the Far Side one also.

Living Room / Is there a more efficient way to update ftp text files?
« Last post by superboyac on December 27, 2010, 04:08 PM »
This may sound like a stupid question...
Whenever I have to change the css style of my website, I start fiddling around with the text file, and updating the ftp to see how it looks online.  I do this a lot when I modify the stylesheet.  Is there a more automated way to keep doing this?  It's a pain right now, I'll explain my procedure:
1.) edit stylesheet file in text editor
2.) press Save
3.) drag-drop file in ftp folder
4.) confirm that Yes, I do want to overwrite the existing file
5.) go the website, click refresh
6.) repeat

how do you guys do it?  I know a lot of you do this for a living or just a lot in general, so I'm sure you have better ways for it.  I know programs like Ultraedit have built in ftp's, but not all text editors, and is there another way of doing it other than a built in ftp for the text editor?

Why in the world does M8 have two separate pages for what seems to be the exact same product with a different name?  Unless I'm mistaken, "25 clips" and "M8 Free Clipboard" are exactly the same:

Thanks...I'll experiment with it in 2011.

Note: for day-to-day web use I still prefer this trackball. Takes a little getting used to at first. However, once you've acclimated, you can absolutely fly with this thing. Not cheap ($99.99 list! - and seldom discounted) but still well worth its asking price IMHO. :)
40, could you explain a little the specific advantages of using a trackball like you mentioned?  i tried it out a while back, but I couldn't understand how it made anything faster or easier or anything.  What am I missing?

The average user isn't savvy enough to sort large result sets. Why else would Apple not let you sort in the ape store? Because apes can't sort. But they can press a button.

To be certain, iPads are gorgeous devices. Forged in Hell on tortured baby souls by Satan's transvestite donkey witches. :D
haha...that's some big league hating there!  It's true, you can't sort in the app store, it drove me nuts the first time i saw that.  I don't care.  Like I said, once I stopped comparing the ipad to my fully featured desktop monster, I got over all of this stuff.  I'm telling you, once you think about apple products as simply extensions to your computing habits, you'll be fine with them.  As long as you have a homebase computer that is very rich and flexible like windows or linux, you'll be fine using apple products.  It all comes down to file management.  I made a thread about it, it was such a big revelation to me.

Ah, cmon people, don't hate on the ipad.  I have it and it's great.  Once I got over the idea that it's not a fully functional desktop computer, I realized how useful it is.  It's the best tablet out right now, the others are not even close.

I'm not a fanboy.  I'm also eagerly waiting for a competitive Windows or Android tablet.  But it can't suck.  It has to have a nice screen, first of all.  I don't want a crappy screen.  It also needs to have as responsive multi-touch as the ipad.  If they can get those down, I'm interested.  And nothing big, bulky, plasticky and bad battery life.  I can't believe it's been half a year, and there are still no competitors.  What's the best alternative, the Samsung Galaxy tab?  I heard Windows is secretly working on a tablet friendly OS (Windows 8?) and Sony is also working on a tablet something.  that would be exciting...Sony and Windows.  But Sony is bound to screw it up royally.  And Windows...well, hopefully they can come up with something innovative and practical.  It's Sony I'm more worried about...they always have to ruin something.

Hmmm...

I likely wouldn't kick Joanne Kelly out of bed for eating crackers.  ;)

But I definitely would for booting up an iPad.  :P
Suit yourself!  She's welcome in my bed with or without an ipad.  If she brings one, we can do...stuff...with both of our ipads.

I'm revising my backup system next year, 2011.  I need some help in the best way a home user can add several disks.  I currently have 6 hard drives all connected to my desktop in various ways.  I want to have a more commercial type of solution.  I want to build a server, possible a Windows Home Server, that will house 10 drives or more.  I need some kind of rack or special tower that can hold around 10 disks (give or take).  I'd like to be able to slide disks in and out easily.  I don't know what is out there that can do that.  It's not something easily found in the consumer stores, and I'm not familiar enough with servers and such to have an idea about the good brands, models, or exactly what the words are for the technical terms.  But I want a separate piece of hardware that can house about 10 disk drives and I'd like to connect it through esata or lan to a server computer, I have no idea how to do that connection.  I'm guessing it's esata or an ethernet cable, but I don't know.  I am NOT looking for a NAS, as in one that is self-sustaining and has it's own OS on it and everything.  I just want the thing that holds the drives.  So please teach me about all of this if you know.  Thanks.

What's the Best? / Re: Video Splitter: What's the best AND easiest?
« Last post by superboyac on December 23, 2010, 09:30 PM »
Thanks 4wd!  That's very helpful.  I was doing most of those things, the part that confused me was that more often than not, when I opened a video file to split, I'd get a message about reindexing or some other technical jargon.  If I said "no", then sometimes the split file would be bad in some way.  If I said "yes" then I was worried that it was doing recoding and other things that would make it not lossless.  Actually, i said yes to one of those messages, and after that, I wasn't able to select the "Copy" setting in the video part.  So I knew that meant lossless was not going to be possible.

This stuff is all too technical for me.  I just want to split a video.  I just want to enter the start and end point, press split, and it splits it in a lossless way.  Whatever it has to do to reindex and get the AV syncing right, just do it.  Don't ask me about it, don't tell me about it, just do it.  I just want the clip split.

Man, I'm going through this again.  I'm still shocked that there isn't a popular, free lossless splitting program out there.  It sounds like AviMux is useful, but it's not clear whether it does lossless splitting.  It seems like it does, but there's too many nerdy dialogs and things that come up that make me doubt it.  Ugh...video stuff is always such a pain.

Like Superboyac, I don't want my clipboard manager to be a database manager or notetaker.  I'm concerned only with the clipboard features.  One feature that I use a lot in ClipMate is "Power Paste."  I can gather information from a number of different places and then paste them one by one automatically into a form, a report, a list, or whatever.   That plus the ability to click on the ClipMate icon and have it show me the most recent clips (currently, I can see the last 20 without changing anything; were I to make the interface longer, I could probably see the last 40 or more, and of course choose the one I want to use) are probably the features I value most.
Ah!  That is handy!  I have to try that.  That is one area that I find lacking in CHS and Arsclip.  I often run into the same situation with filling in form boxes, and something like Clipmate would be perfect for that.  Thanks!
Actually, what I was talking about wasn't clipmate.  i tried something from a while back based on a suggestion here, and it was a very lightweight simple clipboard manager that literally had a grid of boxes with each clip in it, and I could just click the buttons to paste them into whatever form.  i forgot what it was called.

OK, I know most people are looking for the biggest and baddest clipboard manager, and I'm no different.  But over the years, I've noticed that I have subconsciously settled on the following applications:
Arsclip
Clipboard Help+Spell

So the way I look at it, I don't really need a database manager, notetaker, etc.  A lot of the options out there will have some notetaking capabilities within the clipboard manager.  Even CHS has this.  That's good and all, but it's a separate issue from the clipboard features.  So what I'm saying is don't make the mistake of choosing a clipboard software because it has additional notetaking storage/retrieval features that you find useful.  I say that because if there are notetaking features that you need, there are tons of better options and alternatives for that.

Anyway, for clipboard specific functions, there's one feature that dominates my usage: the pop-up menu under the mouse pointer.  That's one of the most productive features I've ever encountered as far as copy/pasting goes.  Wherever you need to paste something, you can hit a hotkey and a menu will popup under the mouse with all the past dozens of clips, and you simply choose the one you'd like to paste.  I basically ignore most other features in the clipboard software.

I alternate between which software I like better between ARSclip and CHS.  They both do the popup thing well.  For the popup, I very slightly prefer Arsclip.  But CHS is a better made program overall, I just have a couple of minor quibbles with it.  Arsclip's preferences and layout can be a little chaotic, that's why I say that.

Fortunately, I discovered things like ReadItLater, Canaware NetNotes, and CintaNotes. So now, when I'm doing heavy duty research, I'll rely on those tools rather than keep all my 'jumps' open because I'm afraid of losing something.
MM!!  Cintanotes is very nice.  It's in my portable toolbox now.  Thanks man!

I decided to go with wordpress with the prophoto theme and the phpurchase shopping cart plugin.  It's working out really well, I'm happy with.  It's more of a comfort thing.  I think it's going to be easier for me than tomatocart since I've had a couple years of wordpress experience now.

Hi everyone, JJ...
I've been experimenting the last few days with Dropbox and it's working really well.  I have my off site computer syncing my files with Dropbox every night (using SFFS).  Then my home computer syncs Dropbox to my backup location.  It works pretty smoothly.  So unless I go over 2GB, I'm happy with it so far.
