Excellent for giving someone a hand but I don't think you can use it for remote access.

It may or may not help us. Who would have thought that 50 years of arguments and rivalry about the structure and meaning of quantum mechanics (surely one of the most esoteric theoretical models ever produced) would lead to the development of mobile phone technology?

Actually come to think of it if Neils Bohr and co. hadn't bothered maybe there wouldn't so many hours spent arguing over where to put the aerials and life would be slower and quieter. Mind you we would still be doing sums with slide rules and have TVs that take a lot of time to warm up ;)

Maybe there is an alternative reality without mobile phones - it is just a question of how to get there ....

Sorry - it just annoys me when tolerance is all meant to be one way. I have frequently been criticised and threatened by fundamentalist christians. If people want to live a bronze age life style (which is what fundamentalist should do to follow the biblical rules correctly) that is fine with me I just object to it being pushed on the majority of society which seems to be a growing trend in the US and UK.

Nope - watch out Newfoundland he's heading your way - and at the moment Cody is winning the race!

Sorry I thought all christians would like to go to heaven as soon as possible - and that was what I meant by the comment. You may view it as poor taste but I actually find a lot of religious belief and dogma in pretty poor taste - especially when it is imposed on the majority of society who don't share those beliefs.

However, it was a badly phrased sentence and I did not mean to equate world terrorism and christian fundamentalism. It was meant as black humour (presumably I will now be accused of racism).

Religious Rant - sorry I am in a bad mood, don't read it if you are sensitive
Having said that the history of christian fundamentalism over the last 2000 years isn't exactly spotless when it comes to tolerance of other belief systems or even rational thought (Galileo and Copernicus spring to mind, not to mention the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition and slaughter of Native Americans - and that is a just a small number of examples).

Actually fundamentalist christians and jews believe in the pentatuch - genesis being the basis of fundamentalist belief in creationist philosphy (and presumable intelligent design). I have never quite worked out how it is decided which bits of these five books are the word of god and which can be ignored. If it is all the word of god then it strikes me that most of the judeo-christian philosophy is built on systematic genocide - which is actually a step up the order of horror from terrorism.

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: how come my posts were removed by wordzilla

The 1st thing I saw is "Donations", i.e. DC asking money before providing anything.

Can you show me where the site/forum says any such thing. All of the software at donationcoder.com is absolutely free to use whether you make a donation or not, and people post to the forum all the time without making any financial contribution.

If you read the instructions about donating you will see that whatever you donate goes into your account and you can donate it, in the form of Donation Credits, to any member of the site you like. The cost of running the site is only offset if you choose to donate to the general site funds.

The fact is that the many people who post applications here (and Mouser in particular who set up the site and has made available the large proportion of applications freely available on this site) do so freely because they like to write applications, help people and contribute to the community. To me (this is not policy just my opinion) it seems only polite to acknowledge people's efforts in a small way - and one way that can make a difference is a small donation to the software author or the website.

A lot of people like life to be completely free - but things are only ever free because someone else picks up the tab. If everyone shares the tab occasionally, in however small a way, it makes life pleasant for everyone.

Since I have been posting on this site quite a few people have given donations to me. They usually range from 50 cents to a couple of dollars, so I ain't going to get rich quick, but there is a nice glow when you feel that someone values your contribution to a thread or in some other way.

By the way if you think donationcoder.com is spamming you with newsletters why not go to your profile and stop them. They aren't spam they are part of the benefits of membership and only get sent out once a month.

On the original topic in this thread ...

Rshortie , it is a sad fact of life that if it looks like spam, tastes like spam and smells like spam then 99.9% of the time it is spam. As a moderator I probably get a number of threads reported as spam every day. Almost all of them are spam. Inevitably mistakes are made and if this was one I, as one of the moderators here, hold my hands up and apologise. We try hard to get it right but we are fallible.

Good grief you'd have to be desperate for holiday!!

Note the natural beauty of the starboard side (and don't forget to vomit off the port side)

According to my first attempt I had been cast adrift on the South Atlantic. Later I was marooned on Greenland.
Now I'm somewhat closer to home.

Apparently Nudone is swimming for his life as we type in the middle of the North Sea - luckily Cody is keeping an eye on him. Some one toss him a rubber ring quick!

Two of my systems have AMD/nVidia nForce motherboards and nVidia graphics cards and neither have any problems with SP3. I have an Intel based notebook and an AMD ATI Xpress/ATI video card based desktop and neither of those have any issues either. None of my XP SP3 based VM machines have issues either.

I am grateful that I haven't had issues - maybe it is particular versions of nVidia's drivers causing the problems - have you looked to see if they have been updated?
3110
Strange - I wonder why. No such probs with screensavers and powersaving mode here with SP3.

If the world ends, will we at least have a few minutes to think about how cool it is and watch it end? or will it happen in the blink of an eye and no one gets to appreciate it?

If a black hole is created you'd better have the tomato sauce in your hand because you would be turned into spaghetti almost instantly!

Actually I thought it would have been kind of neat if the Earth had been destroyed in a proton sized black hole. It would have at least stopped global warming - and just think no more British summers!!! It would also solve the world terror issue and the US christian right in a flash (plus they would all be very happy with the outcome).

The final irony is that Switzerland - the country that avoids conflict at all costs - would be responsible for world demolition.

Now ... where's that 'Dial a Vogon' card I had  :tellme: :tellme: :tellme:

You probably can unistall SP3 - there is usually an SP install option that lets you back up old files before updating so as long as that option was ticked ....

Anything installed post SP3 might need to be reinstalled, but probably not.

Having said that I have installed SP3 on numerous computers and apart from losing the Address Toolbar on the taskbar I haven't been aware of any issues with SP3. MAybe it is one of those SPs that cause some people real issues. Now Office 2003 SP3 is a right PITA and I never did install that (and now I use 2007 so it isn't an issue).

General Software Discussion / Re: Corel PaintShop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 10, 2008, 12:43 PM »
Corel is the graveyard of software ...

They buy out brilliant packages from reputable companies and then turn them systematically into buggy dogs breakfasts.

When you think Corel Draw and WordPrefect used to be near (or even at) the top of the heap - now they have drifted so far off traget I cannot imagine why anyone would steal some of their products - let alone buy them.

PaintShop Pro is just another brilliant package that has died a death of a thousand cuts under Corel's stewardship.

Painter seems to be just about holding its own but I think they got the original developers to continue the work when they bought that package from MetaCreations. New versions tend to be buggy but each version seems to get one or two service packs that fix the worst of the bugs. (The classic one was in version 7 when saving your file over an existing file corrupted the image file so it couldn't be opened again!)

The KPT photoshop plugins are still being sold even though they were losing compatibility back in Photoshop 7 days and they have seen no work at all since they were bought.

Intervideo will also go the way of Corel. They have released new versions of some apps but at a rough guess I would say you are likely to be paying for a new logo with the word Corel instead of Intervideo and not much else.

My favourite was when they released a Debian based version of Linux - they struggled on through 2 versions, were completely unable to provide any technical support (because none of there tech people even knew what Linux was - let alone have an understanding) and finally gave up when so many people demanded their money back because it simply did not get through the installation process on most systems!

The quicker Corel dies the better IMHO. Put the poor beggars out of their misery and put them on welfare - they will probably be more productive

When I did it I just used a complete image of the Windows XP disc and then added the drivers necessary for my hard disc.
3117
I agree - if you are using Windows XP keep a floppy disc handy. My laptop doesn't have a floppy drive and XP wouldn't install from the CD because the latest SATA drives aren't recognised. I had to use nLite to build a Windows installation CD with the cirrect drivers included which was a real pain - though I suppose I only had to do it once.
3118
There is a memory tester in MS downloads

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

It isn't a Windows based app but if you actually want to check the memory for problems why wopuld you want to do it with Windows running - there are then great chunks of memory that you can't test properly.

The Windows Diagnostic tool is a bit like MEMTEST in that you run it by rebooting with a floppy. Simply leave it running for as long as possible (at least overnight).

Testing memory outside a Windows environment isn't 100% fool proof but if it passes you know the problem probably lies elsewhere. Run a windows based tester and you can't really tell for sure what is causing the problems - even if it reports memory errors it may not be the memory but windows itself causing the issue!

General Software Discussion / Re: Outlook 2007 isn't so bad
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 09, 2008, 04:46 PM »
I thought the whole point of the registration system was so that MS installers could keep track of the number of installed apps using a product. That way is A installs X and then B is installed and needs X the registered count for X bumps to 2. That way if A is unistalled X is not uninstalled just the registration count is reduced - that way product B should be unaffected.

Maybe I have the wrong end of the stick but I thought this is why you get messages saying files are no longer needed (ie. the usage count drops to 0) when you uninstall apps.

It seems a pity MS can't use their own system the way it was intended to work. If this wasn't the intention what is the point of registering instances of apps?

Mouser - any chance of embedding:

at the top of the thread to display the frapper map?

The only disadvatange of that map is that it only has towns (at least in the UK) so it is hard to be accurate.
3122
welcome - nice work. Here is another spider
3123
XP and Vista both come in 32-bit and 64-bit 'flavours'. As I understand it there are restrictions in 64-bit XP to maintain software compatability - though you may be able to enable PAE to extend the addressable memory. I haven't tried Vista 64 but I think it supports up to 8Gb.

The big problem is application compatibility. If software is written and compiled to run on 32 bit windows none of the memory addresses have enough bits to address more than 4Gb of physical memory because they are all 32 bit addresses. If software is compiled for 64 bit windows then it has 64 bit addresses and can address a huge amount of RAM - though MS have restricted the physical amount of RAM that can be actually used artificially. Some server products are less restrictive.

That's a simplistic view (I am simple) and may or may not be wholly accurate but it gives the idea.

United Kingdom (England)

Seems a bit boring after Renegade!

I do have a little toe in the Canadian camp too as my family live in Ontario and are now Canadian citizens (though I am not).
3125
Yes - it is simply mapped to devices in the memory map and the actual physical memory is unused.
