General Software Discussion / Favorite ZIP/RAR application?
« Last post by zridling on August 17, 2005, 12:03 AM »
For the fun of it, and out of curiosity, what is your favorite archiving/compression application? The following seem to be the most popular, among over 100 different ZIP/ACE/7z/RAR apps I could find:

Yours may not be on the list, but also tell us why you like it; for example, archive speed; ease of use; deploys favorite format; free; or whatever.

Darwin, I've been working with ALZip throughout the day and its attraction lay in its simplicity. Where apps like PowerArchiver and ZipGenius load up on options and features, ALZip keeps everything straightforward and simple. In fact, you picked the perfect word: simple. It even shares several major features of other, more advanced apps, but is neither polished nor does it include the finer things the others share. But it doesn't measure up to the current crop apps in any category. Among them are several prominent misspellings in the Help file and this inaccurate claim:

Does ALZip support the RAR format?
Yes, but you can only extract RAR files due to copyright issues. Eugene Roshal of RarSoft, the company that makes WinRAR, doesn't allow other utilities to create RAR archive files.

Say the word and I'll be happy to include it in the review. One more won't hurt, but I want to limit this review's scope.

Be happy to, but let me run it so I can see the nag alert in two weeks.

Thanks for the suggestion Ampa! Mouser, I'm with you. I'd never heard of TUGZip, but it makes a good first impression. I did compression tests throughout the day on the side while reading the Help files to make sure of everything and found some surprising results. As a teaser, let me say I was surprised. What most people say (and believe) isn't true. Now I'll zip it, no pun intended.

Nudone, WinRAR seems to be an exception to several rules, among them SFX creation and management. WinZip, however (along with PowerArchiver), only makes an EXE out of an existing ZIP file. It's "Self-Extractor Personal Edition," not to be confused with their $49 WinZip Self-Extractor app. Given that SFX Maker is both standard and freeware, and that it integrates with WinZip, I cannot imagine any informed person paying for it. From WinZip's description, the $49 WinZip Self-Extractor app is independent of WinZip itself, separately licensed, and does not require WinZip for creating .EXEs. This page lists the differences between it and the Personal Edition.

And thanks for the suggestions, Darwin. I'll look into them. My starting point was download popularity. Of two types of apps, it seems every other company makes a ZIP and FTP utility. ALZip seems to fall into that category, much like PocoZip and ACDZip.

I'm so excited! I've signed on to review Archive/Compression applications and I need your input. I've composed the following list based on their download popularity from a variety of download sites (CNET, FileForum, SnapFiles, FileHippo, etc.), and DCC member suggestions below. Although the market is flooded with ZIP apps, if you have a suggestion or a favorite not listed, let us know! In alphabetical order:

I intend to have the first draft of the review will be available to members for feedback and revision by Sunday, 28 August 2005. Caveat: This review will focus on the best overall application, not the best data compression format. And in case you're unaware of it, DonationCoder.com has its own resident compression expert, Jibz of Ibsen Software.

I agree. I went bat-crap crazy when Nick Bradbury sold FeedDemon (and TopStyle) to NewsGator and NewsGator promptly said "Pay up, suckers, and keep paying every year." I had purchased both and felt my investment (both purchase costs and time learning and supporting/feedback his beta software for years) was just flushed down the toilet. NewsGator has not one, but several subscription plans. I kept asking — and never got an answer — Why the hell would I PAY for something (an RSS feed) that is free everywhere? That's like paying for NewsGator's special brand of air, or less so, for bottled water.

I never received an answer from either Nick or the head honcho of NewsGator after writing each personally, but have since ditched both apps. I will never, ever, support a subscription-based model for software. I'll buy a BIC pen and write on scratch paper first.

Thanks jpfx, for recommending Peretek's Simple File Joiner. It's the perfect minimalist approach to this kind of app. (Just wish they'd combine the Joiner and Splitter apps into one, but figure most people only use the joiner?)

Got a wife who's forcing me to move to the south of town (about 50 miles from here), so I used Google Earth to measure the distances from downtown St. Louis, to the Art Museum, to certain spots. In the worst case, I'm going to be 15 further miles from something, in the best case, I'll be 20 miles closer to my favorite Opera house.

The NoteTab text editor has a Lite, Standard, and Pro versions, and a pretty good delineation of each one. That's even rarer.

[Edvard]:Go ahead and download Autohotkey or AutoIt and write a few scripts, there's some great stuff to be learned there...

I've been learning very small bits with AutoHotkey and am loving it. I'll never have the brainwidth for programming (nor am I interested in that angle), but scripting something that works is a lot of fun. Heck, I'd pay just sit and watch SKrommel play around with AutoHotkey for a day. Like yourself, Edvard, I encourage even those who are the least bit curious to dip their toe in the scripting waters. It's a great step toward the deeper waters.

Living Room / Deluxe/Pro versions: Good or Bad?

I often wonder why some applications offer various versions when they should just offer customers their best product. I'm thinking off the top of my head about Registry apps, some compression apps, tweaking apps. Not saying there should never be a Pro or Lite version of a product, but video apps are notorious for this practice. I say just build one product and let the user decide whether they want the whether to install or turn off certain features.

Here is a couple of screenshots to illustrate exactly.

Yes, I did, but at 1,1,1 setting, it seems like it's 1.5-2 pixels thick. And if I zero those values — Radius, Offsetx/y — the shadow is thick on the bottom and right sides, like a shadow should look! But a simple border would fix this.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS (Pretty please?)
(1) A keyboard shortcut is needed for the Add Border feature as well! ALT+B or CTRL+B perhaps?

(2) Consider adding a keyboard shortcut for the File > Save Image As option. Maybe ALT+A or CTRL+A.

(3) One last (small) thing: the Preferences dialog does not close with the ESC key, assuming I want to cancel my changes. That would be nice, though not necessary.

I continue to be impressed with Screenshot Captor's agility and processing speed. One feature I'd kill to have with it is the ability to add a border. Nothing fancy, just a black 1-pixel border. Perhaps the whole palette could be offered, but 1-2 pixels would replace what I do with SnagIt right now.

Most file splitting apps have awkward interfaces. With files now growing beyond 4G in size, it's time to find (or build) a great splitter. I need help. Not counting zip-splitting by ZIP apps like WinZip and PowerArchiver, what do you recommend?

Matthew Ellison recently updated his Review of Screen Capture tools over at WritersUA. The spoiler is that SnagIt wins the review by doing everything that others do not. He wrote the original version of this almost two years ago, but it was so good, he continued to update it as new versions came out.
