Newsletter for July 19th, 2006
Codename ''Best Of Blog"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read the newsletter!"

1. Best of Blog - Major New Feature Added to the Site
We've just added a big new feature to the website that we are really excited about and proud of, called Best Of Blog.  It's designed for the casual reader; a daily blog highlighting the best and most interesting threads on the forum every day.  It's the perfect page to bookmark if you can't find the time to read all the new posts on the forum every day, and it's the perfect page to send your friends for an introduction to the DonationCoder.com website.  Please help us spread the word about this new page!

2. New Member Mini-Review Section
Using the same technology as we have used in our Best Of Blog, we've created a new page with nice friendly overviews of the member-written mini-reviews on our forum.  We haven't finished adding all the old mini reviews, but drop by and pay it a visit - you might discover some new cool software.  We are also using the same technology to make a page for coding snacks which we will make live soon.  Members have also written some nice new mini reviews:

3. C++ Builder Programming Contest Entries Now Available to Download
We've extended the deadline of our C++ Builder Programming contest until August 14, but in the meantime we've invited the entrants to make their donationware program submissions available to the public, and we've created a special page where you can see screenshots and even download and play with them.  You'll find a nice mix of games and utilities, and we will be adding more in the upcoming weeks.  Thanks to all of the coders who have entered so far.  And don't forget to send them a donation if you want to support their work!

4. DonationCredits and CodyCoins
It's been a little over three months since we unveiled the DonationCredits micro-donation system at DonationCoder.com, as a way to encourage and make it easier, safer,  and more economical for people to make small donations to one another to support each others work.  In those three months over three thousand dollars worth of credits have been exchanged between users. But we think we've only scratched the surface of the usefullness of the DonationCredits system and we are going to be redoubling our efforts to make them a more useful way to support people who are doing good stuff in the donationware scene.  This week we've made it easier to add a CodyCoin image and link to your own web pages that will let people know you are asking for donations and will bring them to your donaion page on DonationCoder.com where they can make a donation to you.  Soon we will be making a page listing all member websites or donationware programs that include CodyCoin links.

5. Audio Radio Show Podcast Producer Wanted
This past week we released the third DonationCoder.com audio radio show podcast, our mix of humour and computer/software chat.  And now the time has come to pass the torch of producing the podcast show to someone with better broadcasting skills.  Like everything on our site, it's an unpaid volunteer position for someone who would be doing it for the love of doing it, but we will try to encourage member donations to the producer as always.

6. New Software Updates
The most recent versions of Screenshot Captor and URL Snooper have finally come out of beta.  Screenshot Captor v2.18.03 now includes a huge and completely up to date Help file filled with tips and tricks you probably didn't know about before, as well as some very handy new features like quick deletion of images and quick path copy to clipboard.  URL Snooper v2.13.04 now has some great new features designed to make life easier, including automatic network adapter detection and a new optional simple mode which can making everyday url snooping a care free pleasure.  We've also improved the URL detection to identify more streaming media urls, and added more troubleshooting pages in the help file.

7. New Coding Snack Releases
As always, the coding snack requests for little utilities continues to be a popular section on our forum, and a new autohotkey coder (db) has been posting some fun solutions.  Skrommel as usual gives us some great new stuff as well.
  • Sync Network Folder Contents as Shortcuts - gsull asked for a way to have links for all the contents of a remote directory. dB came to the recue and made  Shortcut Maker. then, skrommel gave some help too and made ShortcutSync.
  • "Open" icon - Drag and drop icon2 onto it and icon2's Open action.  DanD said "My attempts to double-click on an icon don't always work" and he got some interesting solutions, including dB's fun  Bump-n-Run.exe
  • Systray keyboard lights - Prosayist asked for an utility to present the current state of the keyboard toggle keys at the tray. jgpaiva made KeyInfo, and prosayist made a few iconsets for it too!
  • DoOrDel - A small deadly utility by Skrommel that will delete files on boot up if the wrong password is entered.

8. More New Site and Forum Features
We take our responsibility to stay on the cutting edge of internet technology seriously, and so we've been busy adding new features to the site and to the forum.  Your donations make it possible.  Check out these new features:

9. General Software Discussion
Lots of great software discussion on the forum in the last two weeks:

10. Fun and Games
Who ever said not to mix business with pleasure? That's all we do here!

11. Web Discoveries and Articles
What's worth reading on the web? With so much information out there it can be hard to know.  Here are some recent discoveries we're talking about on the forum.

12. Developer's Corner

13. July's Discounts and Giveaways
Each month we contact companies you have told us you want discounts from, and ask them if they are willing to provide a month long discount to our DonationCoder.com members, and donate a few copies for us to give away in a monthly drawing:

Special thanks to jgpaiva for helping prepare this month's newsletter.

We depend on the financial support of people like you:

Seedling's Software / Re: Hi Everyone / Random MixTape Maker ideas
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 02:53 AM »
actually i think the idea could be quite nice to add to mixtape:
put a text box and let the user type in words or phrases separated by commas, and only songs with that in the title would be used; add another box for artists.

so for example, i could type:
love
in the title box, and i would get a mixtape of all songs with the word love in their title. cool.

or i could type:
blondie,pretenders
in the artist box and i would get a mixtape of all songs by those two groups

this seems like a nice idea to me.

Site/Forum Features / Re: DonationCredits CodyCoin Web Page Links!
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 02:42 AM »
i'm going to add a feature so you can add some info to your link about what page the user came from when they donated to help you know.

and may i strongly recommend to people that they customize their donation "blurbs" in their forum profile to tell people who click on the donate link a little bit about you and that you do appreciate and welcome their donation - it makes people feel better about donating if they know they are donating to a real person who has real need of the donation.

i will soon be making a list of all pages with donationcredit(codycoin) links so please do keep posting the urls to your pages if you use them.
30657
that was done with Fireworks, but the key was that the cody graphic was made using layers by nudone with the top beak being one layer, and lower beak being another.

so it was complete luck that i was able to achieve the effect of the thing being in his beak so easily.
30658
congrats on your new job!

i had a lot of trouble with the podcast this month - one of the segments resisted all efforts on my part to get it down to a low (48 or 64) kbs bitrate.  it was painfull.  so i eventually had to save it purely as 96kbs, that's why it's bigger.

i have recognized that this will be my last podcast production - i have to pass the torch to someone who has some audio radio show production blood in their veins..

now we just have to find someone with those skills..

the job is a bit of work. it involves:
1) reminding and soliciting people to send in segments (hard!)
2) selecting and cutting down clips to proper length
3) editing them together and recording intros between the segments
4) mixing in a bit of music
5) doing any processing to try to get volumes matched and reduce noise
6) rendering it as a full mp3

Looks nice.

"Poster Printer” works with your existing printer to allow you to print documents at a much larger size than would fit on a single printed page

This is big news - the people who made filemin, regmon, and a whole bunch of utilities, and who are some of the most knowledgable people about windows internals have now been acuired by microsoft.

Q. What are you announcing?
A. Winternals and Sysinternals have been acquired by Microsoft. Winternals is a leading provider of systems recovery tools for Windows-based enterprises worldwide and Sysinternals is one of the leading community and enthusiast sites for people interested in information about the internals of the Windows operating system.

Site/Forum Features / DonationCredits CodyCoin Web Page Links!
« Last post by mouser on July 18, 2006, 04:56 AM »
Ok people, in order to help people understand how they can use donationcredits link on their own websites and in their program about boxes, I'm going to create a list of all pages and programs which use a link to a members donationcredits page.

For more info on how and why to add a link to let people donate to you see:
https://www.donation...credits;detail=links

Or:
https://www.donation...index.php?topic=2942

In short, you can add a simple link from your page to:
http://donationcoder.com/donate/2

Like:

Donate to Me

Or:

Donate to Me

SO, to help people get into the groove, we are going to use this thread to invite people to post the urls to their web pages that link to their donationcredits page, or list any donationware programs that link to it.

AND I am going to make a special page on our main website listing these, so it's a great way to get some attention to your site/program.

Spread the news!

I've updated the info page that shows you how to make links on your own websites or programs more easily:
https://www.donation...credits;detail=links

in short, you can use a simple url now:
http://donationcoder.com/donate/2

where the 2 would be replaced by your forum user #.

note that we encourage you to configure exteneral links so that people can donate directly to you without using the donationcredits system if they want to, and you are encouraged to write a little blurb of text that gets shown to people when they visit your donation page.

I'm hoping that we can make donationcredits and dc a trusted place where people know that if they see the little gold coin on someone's website, they will know that they are donating to someone active in the donatinware scene, and will know what to expect when clicking on that coin, and that donating will be easy.

So that people can place that simple coin and link in their programs or on their websites to accept donations.
I advise everyone to still get yourself a way for people to directly donate to you if they prefer, and specify that in your profile; that way when people click on your donation page they will have a choice whether to use the microdonation system of donationcredits, or send you the money directly.
