this is a perfect coding snack request.. it's exactly the kind of fast prototype thing that deserves to be implemented.
maybe app can adopt her stopwatch/timer, or skrommel can adapt his tasklog util, or someone else wants to give it a try?

great post eschen, and welcome to the site!

[without commenting on this specifc set of programs, in general i think for most of us, spending $10 for a superior tool will almost always be a smarter idea than paying $0 for a tool not as good.  especially when its going to cost you that much in ink to do the printout]

(ps anyone feel like doing a bit of googling and filling in the websites for those other tools as well?)

addnote is not quite done - i wouldnt try to use it yet - but maybe we can get geddi to finish it this week.

but basically the way you would use it is copy the exe somewhere permanent, probably the Scripts/ subdirectory where geddi's FBSLCalc.exe tool lives, and then add a group alias to farr to invoke it like this:

mycaps Screenshot - 001 , 02_24_PM , Jul 19 2006.png

but i repeat that addnote does not quite work right yet.
it doesnt let you specify the file to write into, the commandline args dont parse perfectly, etc.

farr is made to let you design commandline aliases like this so basically you can work with any tool that takes commandline arguments.  Addnote.exe is basically a commandline tool for adding notes to top or bottom of a text file with a date stamp.

actually gerome wrote such a tool to do exactly this..
i cant remember if he posted it - it might need a few extra features but finding someone who wants to use this might be just the thing he needs to perfect it.
let's try to get his attention and see if he will post it.

i guess that another important issue is the ethics of *not* paying these small percentage of top bloggers.
a site like digg is making the owners incredibly rich from advertising dollars.  those dollars are created by this small group of bloggers submitting stories.  is this really right to be making so much money from the work of people who aren't getting any of this money?

side/site note:
donationcoder is not going to be paying posters $1000 per month
but at the same time we are committed to a simple principle which is that as money comes into the site, it should go back out to the people creating the content on the site.  it's not a complicated concept.  those who create the content on the site should be the ones to receive the money coming into the site from people who like the site content.
the motivation for the donationcredits is to help facilitate this, by making it easier, safer, and more economical for people to specifically direct their donations to people adding content they appreciate.  consider this your reminder to send a few credits to people who are posting things you find informative.

and more discussions of it:

This offer is open to about a dozen people initially. You've got to hand it to Calacanis, he is a very savvy businessman and this offer will really stir the 'community news' pot. The cynic in me says he's decided to do some 'offensive defence', to try and put the New Netscape troubles behind him. And money talks.

But put this into context of my post yesterday about Digg's stats, where I noted that a select group of digg users are highly influential, and it makes perfect business sense. Among the top diggers are people who have submitted over 1000 stories to digg, with a 25-40% success rate in getting those submissions to the digg homepage! If you do some back-of-the-envelope calculations, you quickly see that paying those top diggers $1000 per month is a pittence for what Netscape will reap - hundreds of thousands of extra pageviews per month, maybe millions. This will come from increased quantity of stories, as well as the 'quality' that Jason talks about at length in his post (unfortunately quantity still rules on the Web though).

truth be told i'm wary of all of these executable-wrapper protection tools, and prefer using a full virtual machine tool like vwware or virtualpc.
30638
another quote from techcrunch piece
At the end of the day, the Netscape product is a soulless reproduction of one of the most interesting cultural experiments occuring on the web right now. It was thrown at millions of mainstream Internet users (previous Netscape portal users) who don’t understand Digg and probably don’t care (yet). If anything, my bet is that total page views at Netscape have dropped since the changeover, possibly substantially. Buying users from Digg won’t change that one bit.

let me take a slightly unpopular contrary position:
i think digg is currently a great site, but i also think that only the netscape model can survive, and is preferable in the long run.

i say this because as digg gets increasingly popular, it becomes an increasingly attractive target for manipulation.
if getting to the top of the digg front page means a $10,000 profit for a company, you can bet that large organized rings of bots and manipulation groups are figuring out ways to artificially bring websites that pay for it up to the front page.  the only real way i think to reliably combat this is to have preferred trusted experts doing the final step of filtering items.  you can try to implement increasingly complex schemes for detecting such manipulation, but i think it's a losing game.

it is my belief that relying on the wisdom of the crowd is doomed when the crown can be an automated swarm of robots being paid to artificially manipulate the results.  this is the same problem that is increasingly coming to light with the pay per click ads.

as for netscape being a souless imitation of digg.. i'm afraid that deep down i believe that momentum and market share explains most of these things.  in other words, most of the dominance of digg NOW at this point is due to the number of people who know about and use digg already, and publicity it has already.  rather than to innate features of the site.  That's not to say that initially it wasn't the innovation of the site that was responsible for it's growth - it's merely a comment on the fact that there are digg clones everywhere now and i don't think digg has a meaningfull advantage over the unnsuccessful immitators other than market share.

thats not to say that digg may have a slightly better feel than netscape or whatever - but it's my belief that you could make an exact clone of digg on another site, make it otherwise identical or better, but name it sdfsdkfh.com, it would fail miserably and never be able to compete with digg.  that's a scary thought..
30639
This is really quite interesting..
In some sense it sounds a little sleazy, but on the other hand it sounds completely reasonable to me.

I basically agree with its general hypothesis that most of these sites are being driven by a very small group of dedicated "experts" who are adding huge amounts of content.  and this content is building traffic and thus generating ad money.  so shouldnt these "bloggers" get paid for creating the content that the site is getting rich off of?  seems reasonable to me, and putting these people on the payroll also sounds reasonable.  (though 150 stories a month seems a bit of a serious workload!)

What do you guys think?

Talented people's time in our society is primarily engaged with money. As a result we are doubling the staff of DownloadSquad and we've increased the rate we are paying our bloggers to $10 a post on that blog (much more for features). As a result I'm sure our traffic will double over the next three months--in fact I will guarantee that it will happen. Money does change everything.

Talent wins, and talent needs to get paid. I love paying talented people so they can sleep well at night doing what they love. That's my biggest joy in business: gettin' people paid.

Before launching the new Netscape I realized that Reddit, NewsVine, Delicious, and DIGG were all driven by a small number of highly-active users. I wrote a blog post about what drives these folks to do an hour to three hours a day of work for these sites which are not paying them for their time. In other words, they are volunteering their services. The response most of these folks gave back to me were that they enjoyed sharing the links they found and that they got satisfaction out of being an "expert" or "leader" in their communities.
...
We will pay you $1,000 a month for your "social bookmarking" rights. Put in at least 150 stories a month and we'll give you $12,000 a year. (note: most of these folks put in 250-400 stories a month, so that 150 baseline is just that--a baseline).
.
Now, this offer is going to get a big response I know, so we're going to have to limit to a dozen or so folks.

Developer's Corner / Re: running program on different resolutions
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 09:01 AM »
in general, most programs should be designed to resize gracefully to some minimal size, like 800x600.

different gui libraries have different facilities for doing this.

for example, if you use delphi or c++ builder, you can set "anchors" on most of your controls which control the way the resize.

i am a big fan of non-fixed-sizes applications that can be resized.  some programs like winamp, are skinned and are not meant to be resized.

ps. this should be in developers section, so im moving it there.

got me wondering if there were any novice-friendly tools to really help you add a new program to run at startup, in a safe and simple way without having to be a pro windows user.

Newsletter for July 19th, 2006
Codename ''Best Of Blog"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read the newsletter!"

1. Best of Blog - Major New Feature Added to the Site
We've just added a big new feature to the website that we are really excited about and proud of, called Best Of Blog.  It's designed for the casual reader; a daily blog highlighting the best and most interesting threads on the forum every day.  It's the perfect page to bookmark if you can't find the time to read all the new posts on the forum every day, and it's the perfect page to send your friends for an introduction to the DonationCoder.com website.  Please help us spread the word about this new page!

2. New Member Mini-Review Section
Using the same technology as we have used in our Best Of Blog, we've created a new page with nice friendly overviews of the member-written mini-reviews on our forum.  We haven't finished adding all the old mini reviews, but drop by and pay it a visit - you might discover some new cool software.  We are also using the same technology to make a page for coding snacks which we will make live soon.  Members have also written some nice new mini reviews:

3. C++ Builder Programming Contest Entries Now Available to Download
We've extended the deadline of our C++ Builder Programming contest until August 14, but in the meantime we've invited the entrants to make their donationware program submissions available to the public, and we've created a special page where you can see screenshots and even download and play with them.  You'll find a nice mix of games and utilities, and we will be adding more in the upcoming weeks.  Thanks to all of the coders who have entered so far.  And don't forget to send them a donation if you want to support their work!

4. DonationCredits and CodyCoins
It's been a little over three months since we unveiled the DonationCredits micro-donation system at DonationCoder.com, as a way to encourage and make it easier, safer,  and more economical for people to make small donations to one another to support each others work.  In those three months over three thousand dollars worth of credits have been exchanged between users. But we think we've only scratched the surface of the usefullness of the DonationCredits system and we are going to be redoubling our efforts to make them a more useful way to support people who are doing good stuff in the donationware scene.  This week we've made it easier to add a CodyCoin image and link to your own web pages that will let people know you are asking for donations and will bring them to your donaion page on DonationCoder.com where they can make a donation to you.  Soon we will be making a page listing all member websites or donationware programs that include CodyCoin links.

5. Audio Radio Show Podcast Producer Wanted
This past week we released the third DonationCoder.com audio radio show podcast, our mix of humour and computer/software chat.  And now the time has come to pass the torch of producing the podcast show to someone with better broadcasting skills.  Like everything on our site, it's an unpaid volunteer position for someone who would be doing it for the love of doing it, but we will try to encourage member donations to the producer as always.

6. New Software Updates
The most recent versions of Screenshot Captor and URL Snooper have finally come out of beta.  Screenshot Captor v2.18.03 now includes a huge and completely up to date Help file filled with tips and tricks you probably didn't know about before, as well as some very handy new features like quick deletion of images and quick path copy to clipboard.  URL Snooper v2.13.04 now has some great new features designed to make life easier, including automatic network adapter detection and a new optional simple mode which can making everyday url snooping a care free pleasure.  We've also improved the URL detection to identify more streaming media urls, and added more troubleshooting pages in the help file.

7. New Coding Snack Releases
As always, the coding snack requests for little utilities continues to be a popular section on our forum, and a new autohotkey coder (db) has been posting some fun solutions.  Skrommel as usual gives us some great new stuff as well.
  • Sync Network Folder Contents as Shortcuts - gsull asked for a way to have links for all the contents of a remote directory. dB came to the recue and made  Shortcut Maker. then, skrommel gave some help too and made ShortcutSync.
  • "Open" icon - Drag and drop icon2 onto it and icon2's Open action.  DanD said "My attempts to double-click on an icon don't always work" and he got some interesting solutions, including dB's fun  Bump-n-Run.exe
  • Systray keyboard lights - Prosayist asked for an utility to present the current state of the keyboard toggle keys at the tray. jgpaiva made KeyInfo, and prosayist made a few iconsets for it too!
  • DoOrDel - A small deadly utility by Skrommel that will delete files on boot up if the wrong password is entered.

8. More New Site and Forum Features
We take our responsibility to stay on the cutting edge of internet technology seriously, and so we've been busy adding new features to the site and to the forum.  Your donations make it possible.  Check out these new features:

9. General Software Discussion
Lots of great software discussion on the forum in the last two weeks:

10. Fun and Games
Who ever said not to mix business with pleasure? That's all we do here!

11. Web Discoveries and Articles
What's worth reading on the web? With so much information out there it can be hard to know.  Here are some recent discoveries we're talking about on the forum.

12. Developer's Corner

13. July's Discounts and Giveaways
Each month we contact companies you have told us you want discounts from, and ask them if they are willing to provide a month long discount to our DonationCoder.com members, and donate a few copies for us to give away in a monthly drawing:

Special thanks to jgpaiva for helping prepare this month's newsletter.

We depend on the financial support of people like you:

Seedling's Software / Re: Hi Everyone / Random MixTape Maker ideas
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 02:53 AM »
actually i think the idea could be quite nice to add to mixtape:
put a text box and let the user type in words or phrases separated by commas, and only songs with that in the title would be used; add another box for artists.

so for example, i could type:
love
in the title box, and i would get a mixtape of all songs with the word love in their title. cool.

or i could type:
blondie,pretenders
in the artist box and i would get a mixtape of all songs by those two groups

this seems like a nice idea to me.
