Find And Run Robot / Re: Thoughts of a new comer

- Aliases: bad, bad, bad. A software that users this approach will encounter 2 major hits/setbacks. First, there is an overhead to create and organize aliases. Second, there is the expensive operation to remember the alias as you need it. It just does not work. For one software, I had created 100 aliases. How on earth I'm supposed to remember all.

well you'll notice one of the special things about farr is that you can just type name of program and dont need to add aliases.

but it does support the idea of custom aliases which let you use regular expressions and groups/menus, launch web searches, etc.

ps a trick:
type: agroups
to see a list of all known aliases.

well i actually agree with amadawn (and nontroppo made similar suggestion); holding out till everything is figured out is a recipe for endless internal debate.  releasing intermediate attempts is a good idea and i'm going to try to do that, it's just easier said than done and sometimes the internal debate about alternatives can paralyze you.

A review of free or inexpensive HTML/WYSIWIG editors --
Dreamweaver is expensive and takes time to learn)!

i have a horrible confession:
d.martin sent me an amazing review of inexpensive html editors that has been awaiting my editing for over a month!
i'm going to try to get it done and published in july.

i cant say what will become of vista - but i applaud the delay.
from my standpoint, win xp pro is quite good, and id rather them take their time with vista as opposed to rushing it out the door.

Sentinel!!!   :-*
great to hear from you and great to hear you are doing well.

i think your points are really well taken.  ms has taken some hits in the recent past and it "feels" to me like they might be using this as an opportunity to improve the company significantly.

i joke all the time that people have such innate biases.

if ms did what google does, and google did was ms does, you can bet the headlines would be the same:
lavish praise on google for their brilliant delays of their OS.  and hatred of MS for releasing all these half-assed half-finished, always in beta evil web apps.  and don't get me started on the public hangings that would occur if microsoft tried to pull the no-details-revealed stuff that google does with its advertising things. microsoft cannot get a break - but perhaps that's what they've needed to convince them to cut out some of the fat and get back to focusing on quality.

thanks robert, that sure looks like a different error - like something is wrong with the group folders data.. i can't think of what could cause it though.. i'll give it some thought.. sounds like something to do with creating or moving folders in the left hand tree but it really shouldnt be able to happen.. again i apologize.

ps:
i see you have mastercook running - how is it? do you like it?

i'm really sorry to hear that bratliff,
if i can figure out how to reproduce or track down the problem i will try to solve it. if you can remember the error it gives let me know.  there are some other clipboard tools that come highly recommended by members here:

(i assume we are talking about clipboard help+spell - i'll move this to that section soon)

i should mention there are quite a few nice free blog hosting sites (www.blogger.com, www.livejournal.com); vrgirl is a master blogger maybe she can give us an overview..

but i still think it would be fun to have our own blogging place for members.
30615
now a question for the bloggers.
i am going to try to figure out a way to have both options, so blogger can choose, but in general do people think they would rather each of their completely independent blog with their own custom look, or be different bloggers on a single blog.

i am guessing the former; the real advantage of the latter is that if you had 20 bloggers who only posted once a week you would still have a lively vibrant page that visitors might grow to enjoy and visit.  wheras if you each have your own individual blog, you might get lost in the crowd.  on the other hand, im assuming most of you will want to have your own blog which you can use for your own circles.  maybe we can find a way to do both..
30616
i will set up the blog software this weekend.  I think we will use Wordpress.

great post -
i think most of your comments are probably read by people here with a big nodding head saying yes we agree.
and i very much appreciate the spirit of your post.

the real mental block i've had with v2 is all the conflicting issue and trying to solve some user interface issues.  these are not programming issues but user interface design decisions.

an example of the conflicts is the indexing idea.. some people want indexing for speed.. others love the minimal memory footprint and hate indexing.  i have decided in this case that i can support indexing as an option.  but other cases of hard decisions are more difficult to resolve conflicts.

the most valuable thing for me is when people post very specific suggestions about how they would like to make farr v2 work.

the issue of auto-complete while typing is something ive struggled with - farr generally uses an alternative to autocomplete by showing possible multiple matches in its result list.. the question is, should autocomplete also be added in a different form? or is it better to find a way to make the result list serve the same purpose..

i hope you will post some more thoughts and also take a look at some of the v2 planning threads to see the kinds of dilemnas we have been struggling with.

farr v2 is never too far from my mind but i continue to feel like it's hard to work on it while these unresolved issues of user interface still remain.

Older Newsletters / About receiving or not receiving the newsletter
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 04:41 PM »
Just thought i'd post a little link for people who receive the newsletter by email and don't want to, or people who don't receive it by email and do want to.

If you don't want to receive the email, just click the link in the newsletter email to unsubscribe, OR click profile on this forum and then "Notifications and Email" from left sidebar, and uncheck the box saying "Receive notifications" OR just reply to the newsletter email and say unsubscribe.

Now, if you aren't receiving it by email and want to, click profile on this forum and then "Notifications and Email" from left sidebar, and check the box saying "Receive notifications".  Note: any time i get a message from one of these spam protecting services i add the person to the list of people who don't want to receive the newsletter. SO, if you use a spam protecting service, make sure you enable the domains donationcoder.com and donationcodernews.com

We do not share your emails with anyone, we protect your email adresse, and we are committed to not spamming you.  The only thing we ever send is our twice-monthly newsletter.  If you have any troubles please email me ([email protected]) and i will help.

this might be a good time for JacobB to think about any specific details he thinks would be good for the user interface (ie showing task name somewhere? blanking screen when you are in break mode?), etc.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Stumbleupon - better pass your time on the web
« Last post by mouser on July 19, 2006, 04:08 PM »
I have to apologize to the people who were using stumbleupon a year ago when this site started, for not giving stumbleupon a closer look at the time.

I've been using it much more in the last week, thanks to some prodding from alex3f, and am discovering some of the fantastic features.  It is really an amazingly great thing, and I strongly recommend everyone try it.

If you do, here is how to add me as a "friend" whom you can send sites to, view my favorite pages, surf similar sites, etc:

  • First sign up and install the stumbleupon toolbar.
  • Then click on "Friends"
  • Click "Find a friend"
  • Type "dcmouser" and then click search
  • Then when it finds me, click on my avatar.
  • Then Click "Add as a friend" link on top of screen.

Let's all sign up and add each other as friends

WARNING: stumbleupon is ADDICTIVE.  It's like eating cheetos, you press stumble button and it suggests a new random site it thinks you will like.  Then you rate it up or down and it learns your preferences.  It's damn hard to stop surfing this way..
