LaunchBar Commander / Virtual Folders
« Last post by mouser on July 24, 2006, 09:26 AM »
I'm about to release a new version of LaunchBar Commander in the next day or two-
i have spent much of the last few days adding virtual folder functionality, which lets you create menus that are the contents of folders (or start menu, etc.), with various filters and options.

does anyone have any requests related to virtual folders that they would like me to consider before this release?

Developer's Corner / Steve Palina's 10 Myths About Self-Employment
« Last post by mouser on July 24, 2006, 09:09 AM »
Steve Palina writes a popular blog about self employment and jobs and stuff.

My article 10 Reasons You Should Never Get a Job has quickly become very popular, so I figured it would be nice to write something about the realities of self-employment as well.  Since there are so many myths about self-employment (especially among lifelong employees), a good place to start would be to dispel some of those myths.

i think if you split the creatures into two groups you should still fill in the smaller area, killing the creatures who live there, instead of resulting in no filling.

God i feel like a turtle:

AMD XP2000
1gb ram
200gb hd + 160gb hd

Canon ip4000 color printer (cheapo but still good)
Canon LIde usb scanner (cheapo but still good)
HP 2200 Laser printer

Two Samsung 204b LCD screens

Favorite Apps:
Website Watcher (couldn't live without it)
Realplayer (for watching cspan and making myself angry with politics)

ps. i was using very old used burned out crt displays up until earlier this year when the flicker got so crazy that i finally had to upgrade to LCDs.  you can get these lcds now on sale for about $280 each -> http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16824001226
i'm quite happy with them though the comments on newegg are appropriate - they arent as vivid as some more expensive ones, but overall a great bargain for the price.  the best part about lcds -> increase in desk space.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Cursor Toggle Tray (Laser pointer and others)
« Last post by mouser on July 22, 2006, 04:12 PM »
Here is my idea:
An icon that sits in system tray, you right click it and get a menu of cursor set styles you can switch to quickly.
I am most interested in only two:
  • Normal (default)
Laser Poiner (laser red color round dot slightly blurred at edges)

I think this would be useful both when giving presentations, and when playing with your cat.

note you can still give out fractions of a dollar.

nudone's suggestions are interesting but, speaking from personal experience, i might advise taking some time to let them sink in before embarking on implementing them.. they sound like they might involve some real work and im not sure about their long term use.

for example:
wheel select of grids - i may have suggested it but i realize now its not ergonomically fun to use wheel while left mouse is down and right clicking through grids feels perfect to me.  also - i dont think very many people are going to be adjusting grids on the fly very often.  i suspect we will each have our favorite and rarely change it.
grid pop up over cursor - this is a fun idea BUT it sounds like a lot of work.
red dot - this is something that seems like after you got used to the program you wouldnt need or want, but could be difficult to do without causing some side effects (occassional dots left on screen, cpu performance hit).

my #1 request in terms of efficiency would be let the digit key work after you activate grid mode even through mouse, just as they work when you hit win+g.

i have to say a huge congratulations is due to jgpaiva for the amazing work he did getting multimonitor stuff to work.
its absolutely flawless on my multimonitor system.

it takes a tiny bit of time to get used to where you have to click near the top left titlebar area of a window, but after you get the feel for it, it comes without thinking.

really great work.

Living Room / Re: What are your favorite RSS Feeds?
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 04:15 PM »
by the way, what seems to have caused the problem is a spider following all the links on a page - apparently one of the paths of links was deleting stuff.  it's a good lesson if you are a developer coding a web app - to be very cautious not to use LINKS to perform actions like deleting stuff (always use a form).  otherwise if a spider hits your site... bye bye data.

General Software Discussion / Re: Scripting vs. Programming
« Last post by mouser on July 21, 2006, 04:13 PM »
a script is a program, i dont see how you could argue otherwise.  someone writing a script is programming.

if you wanted to differentiate things further you could talk about the complexity and size of the script.  the smaller and simpler, the less comparable it is to a large complicated program.

some programming languages are made for short scripts and are not as suitable for first class object oriented efficient execution, and are designed more for quick and dirty short macro commands in a program.  you wouldn't call someone who writes 3 line macros in ultraedit a "coder", but its a continuum.

there was a time when there was a clear distinction between the "real" programming languages like lisp/c/pascal/asm and scripting languages, which were program-specific simplistic macro systems, or things like the dos .bat language.

but the scripting languages of today, which include perl, python, ahk, are full fledged first class programming languages.

I am finally going to post my list of feeds.

Unfortunately, it's not an .opml file (sorry).
My reader is part of my browser and doesn't have that. I had a tough time finding the file with the list. It was stored in a file called 'screensaver.xml'.

Sorry these don't have many descriptions, but my news reader is a continuous list of feed sites. Sometimes the name is an indicator of what it's about...sometimes not. All I can say is try them out and keep what you like. A lot of these have been recently added to my list as I just started getting back into feeds, now that I have a browser that I like that has a built in feed reader. I start at the top and work my way down every few hours.
