General Software Discussion / Re: What are your favourite Outlook plugins?
« Last post by Darwin on February 22, 2008, 12:19 PM »
Thanks for the pointer to Xobni, iphigenie. I googled it after reading your post above (the day you posted it) and received my invite this morning. It has just about finished analyzing my data and I'm going to take it for a spin. Looks very intersting, though I wonder what all of that power is going to do to Outlook's resource needs...

Drivers that think they are the best in the world, and everyone should just drive like themselves.
Drivers who are inconvenienced by other drivers abiding to actual traffic laws.

Yes (I think) - second line much more succinctly stated than my rant above - but that is what I was trying to say... Is the first line directed at me?

EDIT: re-written.

General Software Discussion / Re: Another System Explorer
« Last post by Darwin on February 22, 2008, 08:48 AM »
Thanks for the tip, Carol. I've tried it and it doesn't seem to have much effect on my machine. This genre of software does seem to be CPU intensive (to a degree) and I've noticed issues with all of the Task Manager-type utilities that I've tried (worst was Task Patrol 2 which basically tied up all of the available CPU all the time. There was not "hit" WRT the operation of the computer, mind you). System Explorer is already very well behaved compared to most

Hi mistercz - welcome to Donationcoder. Nice to see another developer participating here

Thanks for the link, Catalin. I don't have this trouble on my own notebook, but will try it on my wife's (when/if it comes back for repair to its DC power supply), which has a very noisy Toshiba HD.

I've remembered a few others (this list relates to driving):

  • People talking on cell/mobile/hand phones while driving  >:(
  • Not indicating before making a turn
  • Tailgating
  • Speeding in park and school zones
  • Impatient drivers
  • Ah! Here's one that REALLY gets me: driving the speed limit in a passing lane and refusing to move to the right (or the left depending on where you are) while traffic piles up behind them
  • SUV's that never go off road and spend their lives tooling around town, spewing emissions and consuming gas
  • Driving through controlled intersections without stopping (I mention this because it seems to be increasingly a driving style rather than simply a mistake, which is dangerous and annoying in its own right but understandable).

The new (in the last 30 years) packaging on boxes of Smarties. They're impossible to open without ripping the box and no longer provide hours of fun from blowing into the open end to make a wonderful kazoo noise from the other

Thank you Tom and housetier! However, credit for the topic selection goes to Mouser, I just fiddled with the intros and the editorial and did a bit of fine tuning.

Just a niggle (I still like this app a lot): even when sitting in the tray - ie without a window in the taskbar - System Explorer is cycling between 7 and 11% of my CPU.  This makes it comparable to Task Manager and certainly better than WinTasks Pro or Process Explorer, but be warned: like other such apps, there will be a price to be paid if you leave it running in your tray!

Very nice, thanks Carol  It's lightning quick, easy to read, and light on resources. I *think* this is a keeper. I like Systernals Process Explorer a lot, but this, to my mind, has an easier to read/understand/naviagate interface.

Codename "Vertigo"

1. Editorial

Greetings! Darwin here with another installment of the DC newsletter. I'd like to start with congratulations to DC member yksyks and a big welcome to his NEWBORN SON Nathaniel, who was dropped down his parents' chimney at about 2:50 am today (Prague time) by Cody, in a stork suit.  Other than our best wishes, all we can say is sign him up at the forum!

We've enjoyed another busy period "on the boards" and will be pointing out some highlights below.

2. February 2008 Software Discounts

Congratulations to the February Giveaway Winners and a reminder that this month's discounts are active until February 28th, which means that you have one more week to take advantage of the 33% discounts on products from Metaproducts.com, who make a variety of truly excellent programs. Mouser feels that several of their programs are at the top of their respective classes, recommending Offline Explorer, Mass Downloader, and Startup Organizer, in particular.

Discounts end on February 28th:

In addition, due to late posting in January, the following discounts are running through February:

Supporting Members can access the discount codes: Here (you must be a supporter of DonationCoder to access them).

3. Our Software: Find&Run Robot News

A very exciting thing has happened in the Find and Run Robot (FARR) section of our forum.  New DC member czechboy has used ecaradec's Javascript SDK for FARR to create a ton of new and very cool plugins.  Really wonderful stuff here... If you haven't tried out FARR version 2 yet, this may be just what you've been waiting for.

4. Other DC-Related-Software News

DC member Timns offers us two new puzzle games and damax presents a VBS script that will upload a file to an FTP server and put a link to it in your windows clipboard.

5. Living Room

The Living Room is an area of the forum set aside for postings that don't quite fit neatly on the other boards. Thus, it attracts an esoteric assortment of posts, ranging from announcements about software releases ("Vista 64-bit - Service Pack 1 Arrived") to requests for help and advice on hardware choices or issues ("Should I get my new laptop with hard drive partitioned?"). Highlights from the past three weeks appear below.

6. Fun and Games

Everyone needs to kick back and relax, even if it's only for ten minutes grabbed out of a busy day. Check out some of the links below for some interesting links to take your mind off work for a moment.

7. Your Input Requested

We're just about 110,000 members strong and have a very dynamic forum. This can be a bit daunting for new and old members alike. All those posts, where does one begin reading and how can one possibly have anything to contribute? Well, below are a few threads in which we'd love to see your participation. There, point one is already taken care of! For the second, EVERYONE has something useful to contribute AND it's a forum - who said every posting has to be useful?

8. General Software Discussion

The majority of the discussions on the forum are about software -- here's a few general threads from the last couple of weeks you might be interested in.

9. Specific Software Discussions

A number of interesting threads in the General Software Discussion highlighted specific applications. Read on for a few stand outs from the past three weeks.  And don't miss the fact tht DC member Erwin has created a cool program that lets you create new fonts from your handwriting called "Scanahand". Erwin has also provided a 50% discount for DC members who want to try the new beta release.

10. Mini-Reviews and Coding Snacks by DC Members

After a long and secretive vacation, Skrommel has come back with a vengeance and gone on a rampage writing new Coding Snacks.  It's impossible to list them all, so stop by the Coding Snacks section of the forum and have a look, or post a new request for a small freeware utility you want to see created. CWuestefeld also weighs in with a mini-review of Media Monkey 3.  If you have a favourite application that you would like to review, visit the mini-review board and check out the template. The template provides you with all the formatting that you need. If you're feeling more ambitious, and would like to write a comparative review (reserved for categories of software, rather than individual applications), visit the Reviews and Features page to see what has already been reviewed and for some ideas on how these are usually handled.

11. Developer's Corner

Some fun stuff to read in this edition of the newsletter if you are a programmer.  A nice find is an article on how to earn income with an Open Source project, which mirrors some of our own findings about asking for donations and support.  Also, find a good discussion on PHP IDEs, and a nice video from Richard Stallman on why GPL was designed the way it was.

12. Member Site Spotlight

This newsletter we're highlighting DC member Mark0s's File Extension Seeker site. File Extension Seeker is an on line tool that allows you to query a huge list of file extensions and their corresponding descriptions. So, if you ever run into a file extension on your computer that you are not familiar with, wander over to Mark0's site for some help.

Any member that has a website that they'd like to see highlighted in the newsletter, feel free to contact either mouser or myself.

13. In closing

That's a wrap on another newsletter. Thank you, every one, for your continued participation in the forum and providing the content for the newsletter!

I couldn't resist PromptPal for the $14.95 I paid for it, and I've not had any regrets. However, honesty compels me to highlight again that I am hardly a power user and to note that I have a combo of TCI and 4NT v.8 setup as my regular use command-line replacement. My only beef with it is the price...!
3063
Dang! I missed this when it was first posted (here, in the newsletter, on academicproductivity, and on lifehacker  :-[ :o). I've managed to cram a three year British PhD into 7.5 years and counting (kids arrived, I got a job, bougth a house... I'm making excuses). I'm saving the Martini method and will refer to it often. Thanks urlwolf

I just grabbed and activated PowerCommand - really nice. I have a licence for TakeCommand/4NT 8 and I really like it as well. However, I can no longer justify the price - upgrades are $45 and come about once a year, so keeping up to date is expensive. I also have a licence for PromptPal, courtesy of Bits du Jour. Given the huge spread in price between PromptPal and PowerCMD on one hand and TakeCommand on the other, I'd suggest that you try the GAOTD. If you don't like it, try PromptPal, which I have been very happy with... (but I'm hardly a power command line user).

EDIT: added some words here and there to improve clarity/readability. Corrected some typos.

I'm running a later version of  NHC and can confirm that it's not using any CPU at all and only about 4.5MB of RAM. Quite an interesting application, I only re-installed it this morning and will report back with my experiences!

+1 (or should that be -1  >:() on the toy packaging in particular and product packaging in general

The impact on the environment of all this must be profound and it seems to me that it is completely unnecessary and almost universally unwanted!

Yes - Hace MMM+ and FileMenu Tools allow you to go back and forth. I've already uninstalled FileMenu Tools. I'm fickle  :-[ Everytime I edited a context menu entry and then went back to change it, a new entry for the same itme would be created, so I wound up with four entries for the CD Burning Folder... Not a big deal, but I thought it best to leave well enough alone!

Cool! It works with DOpus (at least with the Windows Explorer context items added to the context menu) and it plays with my 16 bit application just fine. Only thing I miss from Hace MMM+ is the ability to move menu items into folders... but perhaps I just need to read the help file and "play" some more.

Nice find, Cuffy! Thanks...
3073
Yeah, the first time I guided myself by the member count in the title bar... there are 60 in the first page, 61 in the second and 39 in the third with more than 50 posts. That makes... 160 :)

Dang! I noticed that anamoly with the third page (actually, all I noted was that there was one avatar in the bottom row and three apparently missing) - didn't think to check the second page... Well done!

I wonder two things about this puppy... first, the second thing: does it play nice with 16 bit applications? Hace MMM+ was GREAT, but completely disabled an important 16 bit app that I use in my research (there is a new 32 bit version coming out... but no word on WHEN). The other thing I'm wondering about is DOpus. Will this app do anything with DOpus context menus... DOpus uses an alternative means to generate context menus and these utilities, like MMM+, tend not to work with it. GPSoftware isn't, apparently, willing to share their secrets, either (apparently this is a common request to the developers of MMM+... My gut tells me the answer to this is NO. Doesn't hurt to ask, though. Right?

Sigh, OK - here I go to answer these questions myself...
3075
OK, Lashiec, either I've lost three users or you've produced them out of thin air - what gives?  ;D
