General Review Discussion / Re: Best Archive Manager Review: Suggestions
« Last post by zridling on August 22, 2005, 06:00 PM »
Carol, I must say, that's a kickass system you have! Like mouser, I've never thought of using WinRAR's Explorer capabilities. I was playing around with a new Windows Explorer replacement and it's funny how those programs want to do everything for you and toss your other apps — open pictures, associate archives, FTP!, back massage, and so on. Almost every time, they don't do them well either.

Email me at:
[email protected]

if you're one of the few who don't have a Gmail account — and would like one — and I'll send you an invitation later today. Many people take one and use it to very effectively filter their spam through their desktop email program. Either way, they're nifty. I've got about 100 to give away.

Mind you, I don't find politics offensive, not even religion, much less Carol's post. I've seen other forums go off-topic and a handful of people get offended, start trolling, then someone gets banned, and before you know it, the forum is burned by people not wanting to take sides on a fight no one intended, yada yada. Ed Bott has a post up this morning on how he unsubscribed from a popular tech forum because its administrator was kicking off anyone who disagreed with his views. Law of unintended consequences? Who knows.

I've got a pretty large .ini file built with AutoHotkey — 56K! — and it only consumes about 3M on my machine, but I didn't notice a significant difference when I loaded other scripts. With 4G of memory, though, it's never even noticeable. And compared to other apps running processes such as GMail notifier (almost 9M) and OutPost Firewall (22M), it's fractional. So yea, I don't even think about it until you mentioned it.

mouser, is that because of the poor Explorer-like implementation in many archive programs or just from being old school? It seems less confusing for me at least, to work without an Explorer view in an archiver; less visual noise I think.

One of the best untapped sources for avatars is right under our nose at Flickr. Just go to any member's page, click on a photo and select the squared 75x75 size and save.

Maybe Mini-Reviews needs a higher profile in the forum. It seems one level too low and is apparently overlooked more often than not?

I know you guys mean well, but please understand how these posts are out of context on this site. They miss their mark because visitors don't come to DCC ready to defend their political convictions, but rather to discuss and argue software and its impact on us. Political blogs are everywhere, and some have the smartest, most clever people behind them — not to mention their comment sections — which I also enjoy. However, as a fellow DCC member, I'm asking you tactfully to share these thoughts on content-appropriate blogs and forums rather than here.

I have nothing to do with the administration of this site, and I hate self-appointed "forum cops," but I want to keep DonationCoder.com focused on its own stated mission and goals, and not get sidetracked by topics like religion and politics, which are infamous for their divisiveness.

And if you can't resist those intellectual urges, consider taking it to your own blog, where you can engage others in a straightforward political conversation (even if humorous), rather than be caught offguard here. I can see the new visitor to DCC saying, "Hey, I thought this was a software and programming site!" Blogger.com offers easy, free blogs to anyone to write anything, and folks like myself and even guys representing the other end of the spectrum like BimmerGeek have fun writing about an eclectic mix of topics with everything on the table. Then come back and share your blog link, and if we like it, we'll have the opportunity to be regulars.

Again, I don't speak for DCC, just myself, but you are two of the sharpest contributors on the site with great suggestions, often making me say, "I wish I had thought of that!" So I hope you'll respect my [heartfelt, sincere] request.

Thanks.  ;)

I've often wondered what madman created those pages. They're impossible to track using something like Website-Watcher, too.

General Software Discussion / Nice File update site: FileUpdates.net

Check out FileUpdates.net. Though their ad rates are in the clouds, its file update listings is what some are looking for. My only gripe is that it doesn't list each day's releases on a single page.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Latest Version Thread - 1.02.02
« Last post by zridling on August 20, 2005, 12:13 AM »
I'm just happy the resize feature includes percentage resizing (which is easiest). Man, this tool just keeps getting better and better. One thing you've already beaten SnagIt at is capture hotkeys. You can program them for different inputs in SnagIt, but it's not easy. With ScreenshotCaptor, just remember which one you need and voila! Done.

In the Adjust Colors and More dialog, is there any way to make the Lock Preview checkbox sticky? That's another detail few would have added, but what a convenient option to see your changes actively. And hey, you've got to have a keyboard shortcut associated with this dialog right? Some users will be spending a lot of time there. (Maybe CTRL+A for 'adjust'?)

Okay, back to work. I've had a headache all day and researching and evaluating archive apps is making my head spin now that it's past midnight.

WinRAR, WinAce, and 7-Zip all have pause buttons in their compression dialogs. Highly convenient when creating those DVD-sized archives.

Yea, but it's crazy not to offer a trial version of RegexBuddy according to JGSoft:

There is no free evaluation version of RegexBuddy.

But you're welcome to buy it first, and then go through the trouble, expense, and wait to get your money back if you don't like it. Is anyone else online that brave?

General Software Discussion / New Microsoft PowerToy: SyncToy
« Last post by zridling on August 19, 2005, 01:32 AM »
A simple tool that actually works pretty well: a new PowerToy by Microsoft called SyncToy. I'd recommend it for simple jobs or folks who don't want to bother learning a full-featured synching tool like DirSync or SyncBackSE.

I appreciate the feedback Mike. I'll have some interesting things to say about StuffIt, having now spent a week with it. StuffIt started as an Apple/Mac application and never caught on with the Windows crowd for one obvious reason: WinZip took the Windows world by storm early on and could be used beyond its trial period for free. (But now that Venture Capital bought WinZip, they're seeing registrations as a revenue source. They also bought WordPerfect about a year ago from Corel.) I will be happy to include ALZip if for no other reason, that new users might want and/or need such a program starting out.
