We're looking for a ton of great entries to make this compilation really spectacular. And we've got the prizes to back it up! In addition to the tens of thousands of people playing your game and seeing your name, at least the top three submissions will also nab one of these prizes:

A copy of Flash 8 Professional (2 copies to give away)
A shiny new black Nintendo DS Lite
More prizes to be announced!

Winners will be judged by the JIG Casual Gameplay staff based on creativity, originality, and aesthetics. You don't have to make anything complex, just wow us with a great idea or two.
...
The deadline for entries is Friday, August 25th. at 11:59PM (GMT-5:00).

Great reading, and worth taking seriously.

Just to cut to the chase for those that want to know which one he decided on:

Spoiler
Bottom line: This is the one running on my main PC. F-Secure Anti-Virus 2006 offers the best mix of solid protection, usability, full e-mail support, performance, small memory footprint, and reliable operation.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Re: Dr.Explain 2.0 released
« Last post by mouser on August 04, 2006, 05:02 AM »
Hi Dennis,

Sounds like you added some really great stuff to the new version.

There's a nice screencast video showing one of the coolest features (automatic capturing of a window and labeling all it's controls for documentation): http://www.drexplain.com/live_demo/

And I see Dr.Explain has chm, rtf, and html web export as well, really nice.  Spellcheck - great!

One minor quibble, we should clear up however the "free copy" thing:
You may use the free unregistered copy of Dr.Explain software as long as you wish. With a free copy you may have only 5 pages per project. If you wish to document a serious application, then you must register Dr.Explain software to use all the benefits of the program.

Normal price is $125.

sounds extremely useful.

there's also this entry in the bcb contest if you want asp support:

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Smart Directory Filer
« Last post by mouser on August 04, 2006, 02:50 AM »
fileseive is interesting but as far as i can tell it really doesnt do what i want.
it creates subdirectories based on alphabet, like \A\, \B\ and sortes based on starting letter of file name.
where im looking for something smarter.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Very simple timeclock utility
« Last post by mouser on August 04, 2006, 12:48 AM »
If you click the button, it will automatically fill the time with the current time.  Or else, you can type the time in manually.

ps. i know there are timeclock type apps around, but dont know if there are any free ones to do what you want; since your needs seem simple enough this seems like a reasonable task.

though it sounds like something you might want to do as a web app (php, ruby).
this sounds like a good assignment for me to post in the programming school actually.

maybe you can elaborate a little more about your needs - like how much do you want implemented to prevent people from putting in fake data, clocking in for each other, etc.

General Review Discussion / Re: Daemon Tools

great mini-review..

one comment: can i request that people upload images to their posts rather than external linking, in order to eliminate images going offline?

you can attach images to posts and then include them in your post with the

text.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Smart Directory Filer
« Last post by mouser on August 03, 2006, 09:59 PM »
I know there has been another request here before about a related thing, so maybe this idea can be combined with others.

In this case im thinking of a tool that would be useful for automatically making subfolders and filing files, based on overlap of filenames.

so for example, if i have in my dir:
Muisc\
dylan - 01 - boots of spanish leather
 dylan - 02 - ring of fire
 dylan - 03 - isis
 heart of glass - blondie
 dennis - blondie
the tide is high - blondie

and we ran the tool, it would result in:
Muisc\
 dylan\
dylan - 01 - boots of spanish leather
   dylan - 02 - ring of fire
   dylan - 03 - isis
 blondie\
   heart of glass - blondie
   dennis - blondie
the tide is high - blondie

OR alternatively:
Muisc\
 dylan\
01 - boots of spanish leather
   02 - ring of fire
   03 - isis
 blondie\
   heart of glass
   dennis
   the tide is high

StumbleUpon is the August 2006 Site of the Month on DonationCoder.com Links Page:
https://www.donation...com/Links/index.html

StumbleUpon may currently be the best place to discover new sites on the internet. While much of the charm of digg.com and its clones has faded as they become subject to more manipulation and mindless rating based on headline keywords, StumbleUpon has only gotten better and better as its audience grows. The premise is simple, using a toolbar installed in your browser, you can rate sites you visit with a thumbs up or thumbs down. Or click a button to be taken to a random page rated highly by others who have similar tastes as you. By clustering similar people together, StumbleUpon is able to do a great job of showing you new sites you are likely to appreciate.

Despite it's large and growing user base, StumbleUpon still feels like somewhat of a class project.. It needs a major v2 facelift, and better organization of some of its social networking features. Regardless, some of the features are wonderful, like the ease of sending links you like to your friends via the stumbleupon network or email. We love StumbleUpon and we highly recommend you install the toolbar and give it a try. StumbleUpon makes money by providing an enhanced account feature you can opt to pay for ($20), which is nice but not essential, and by occasionally delivering you a page that has been paid for by a sponsor instead of the usual random page.

I consider myself a StumbleUpon fan now and highly recommend it.

this is a wonderful idea, i wish i had thought to include such a call for mini reviews.

josh has created a mini review template here:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=4569.0

i will now add it to the "Add Preset Text.." drop down box in the post form so it's really easy to use if you choose to.

ps.
zaine is forbidden from donating more to the site, he's been far too generous already.  instead i would encourage us all to donate to the mini review writers.  zaine, don't make me create a chapter of DC Anonymous in your neighborhood!  Treatment involves cody running loose in your house with a hammer.

I should have posted this earlier - due to a stern lecture from someone i trust who told me it would be insane to run a fundraiser in august, it put the fundraiser off until september.  but the mini review idea is great!

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Display Issues
« Last post by mouser on August 03, 2006, 08:10 AM »
Speaking of which - Mouser, what do you normally use for your GUIs? Do you use a framework, or good old Win32 calls?

Actually I use Borland's C++ Builder on all my programs with big GUI's.  I love it.

For things that have to be lean and mean I use standard win32 or mfc; but i much prefer c++ builder when working with GUI stuff.

Drag&Drop Robot / Re: Display Issues
« Last post by mouser on August 03, 2006, 02:12 AM »
thanks for this post john.. i really have to start addressing these issue - i tend to like to design the user interfaces quite "tight" in terms of free space, and the large font modes cause havok in my forms..
30396
yes. and let's not forget this one that i think really needs to be talked about and worked out in the open source world:

-2.0 : i don't care if you donate as long as you aren't getting filthy rich off my backbreaking labor.  but if you are getting filthy rich by making a 1 line change in my life's work, i expect to get a reasonable share of the profits.

Podcast Radio Show / Re: Podcast #4 Submission Time!
« Last post by mouser on August 02, 2006, 11:07 PM »
the best way is to post each submission and attach your mp3 file to the post, in the new Podcast submission child section:  https://www.donation...ndex.php?board=193.0

no one else will be able to see your post except the podcast producers, so that's ideal.

alternatively, you can: email it to [email protected] with mp3 files as attachments

rover i think it's important to realize that many of us fall into the category of:
"1.23) I want to create something to share with humanity....we can be one bonded by our shared use of something I created... (angelic singing) - but i don't want to be locked up for failing to pay my student loan - can those who can afford it donate so i don't have to choose between homelessness or giving up this project."

Newsletter for August 2nd, 2006
Codename "Blogs and Bosses"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read the newsletter!"

1. Software Releases
DonationCoder.com is first and foremost a site about software.  Let's see what's new since our last newsletter.. And remember to donate some DonationCredits to these coders to support their hard work!
  • InstantBoss - A really cool Coding Snack implementation by app103 of the (10+2)*5 Procrastination Hack Idea (send her some donations if you like it!)..
  • GridMove - What started out as a Coding Snack has grown into an amazing desktop tool for quickly moving and resizing windows into specific screen "zones", with lots of options and multi-monitor support (coded by jgpaiava - send him some credits to support this work!).
  • TweakeMPE - A Coding Snack implementation by JazW of the request for a randomization helper for the Maya Paint Effects Screensaver (send JazW some donations to support this work!)
  • MultipleSend - Send text to multiple windows at the same time (coded by jgpaiava)
  • LaunchBar Commander v1.54.01 - Major new release with advanced virtual folders

2. New Mini-Reviews by Members
The mini review section is looking great and Josh is doing a superlative job as the official demo screencaster on the site.  If you have a program that you think deserves a screencast be sure to drop Josh a note.

3. Audio Radio Show Podcast Producers Found!
We're very excited to have found two forum members who have volunteered to take over the production and editing of the monthly DonationCoder.com Podcast Audio Radio Show.  How can you help? We're glad you asked.  You can help by recording and submitting a short audio segment between 2-5 minutes in length.  Be creative, be funny, be grumpy, just be yourself, and find something to talk about related to software.

4. Programming Contest Updates
Make sure you check out some of the great entries we've gotten to the C++ Builder program contest - you can download and use most of them. If you're a programmer, you've still got a little over 10 days to enter the C++ Builder Programming Contest (ends August 14), but if you miss that deadline, why not give our Accessibility Game Programming Contest, where the object is to design either a game whose output is audio only, or a game with a single button as input.

5. General Software Discussion
Lots of great software discussion on the forum in the last two weeks:

6. Fun and Games
Who ever said not to mix business with pleasure? That's all we do here!

7. Web Discoveries, Debates, and Articles
What's worth reading on the web? With so much information out there it can be hard to know.  Here are some recent discoveries we're talking about on the forum.

8. Developer's Corner

9. August's Discounts and Giveaways
Each month we contact companies you have told us you want discounts from, and ask them if they are willing to provide a month long discount to our DonationCoder.com members, and donate a few copies for us to give away in a monthly drawing (thanks Ampa for organizing all these!):

10. New Site and Forum Features
Your donations enable us to keep working hard to improve the website.  Hardly a day goes by when we aren't trying to tweak it and improve it and add new features.

11. Site of the Month

Site/Forum Features / Re: DonationCredits CodyCoin Web Page Links!
« Last post by mouser on August 02, 2006, 09:15 PM »
I have finished making a series of changes to information that is kept track of when people donate, so that if someone follows a link to donate to you, whether from within the forum, or if you put a codycoin link to your account from an external web page (see above), that if they are not yet a donationcoder.com member and choose to donate to the site, it will remember that they came looking to donate to you, and re-prompt them, after they activate their donation, to choose how much to give to you.

(You are of course as always encouraged to provide an external direct donation link in your DonationCredits profile so people can donate directly to you using paypal or whatever you choose).
