How to avoid the oddities you are encountering?  After pasting the bitmap, and getting it exactly how you want it, go to the Objects menu and choose to "flatten all objects to background".  This will merge in the pasted image into the main one.  All future cropping will proceed as you expect -- though note that you will no longer be able to move/scale the pasted object.

Let me know if it still seems blurry after you merge to the background.

ah, very good - that sorts any privacy worries anyway

But it is still blurry when flattened - does look like anti-aliasing

^enjoyed those videos.
Interesting for a non-musician music-lover to learn a bit from a musician's perspective.

Even with a moron (whom she doesn't seem to mind) horning in to do some party tricks... Seriously Jeff? Seriously? Could you just for once get the **** out of the way and let somebody else play something?  That G-G <rest> F#^G thing you're doing - and plucking way too hard* - adds nothing that couldn't just as easily have been handled by the kick drum. In the background.

Lol, I couldnt watch after about a minute of that :-/

I think PriPrinter Pro will be willing to give Donationcoder a 30% discount on the Pro, making it a bit better.

Based on some recent correspondence after a Bits special (which was not on the Pro.)

seems to me the standard version would be fine - unless the "PDF publisher" integrated in the pro version is something special...

Edit, maybe it is - this link gives a better idea of differences:

Does regular scrolling capture not work?

Have you tried manually scrolling/capturing?
Video here:

I'm not clear whether you've tried regular scolling capture - videos about that here:

Um, thanks very much Target. I have a slight problem, however: when I try to run the exe I get an error message saying 'Can't load icon'. Line 014.

I got the same error, but it did actually load to tray - with icon - and worked as planned.

I select part of an image, copy, and paste it elsewhere in the same image (png):

a)
#1. the quality is not as sharp as originally - it's quite blurry actually.
#2. I do notice that, if I click and drag over an area including the pasted bit, that it momentarily shows as sharp as the original.
#3. if I view the image elsewhere (viewer/photoshop), the pasted part is not sharp
-
#2 above makes me think that the quality of the paste could possibly be made as good as the original image (?)

b)
There is unusual behaviour when cropping the image cuts part of the pasted clip - *all* of the pasted clip continues to show in SC. The thumbnail correctly shows this pasted part cropped, and it also shows correctly in other viewers I tried.
Which seems okay, but if something is being cropped e.g. for privacy reasons, I presume that if I can see it in SC, then others would be able to see it in SC or possibly elsewhere (?)

I thought OEM versions of Windows were the versions Microsoft sell to hardware manufacturers, and weren't released into the "wild," except when they were superannuated bin ends?  I'm surprised if OEM versions could be found on eBay, but maybe I should take a look!  Thanks for the tip.  Whatever machine I have next, I'd really like to have proper install disks, not just some kind of rescue disk.  It's good if Win7 lasts for a few years as XP and 7 seem to be the best-ever versions.

I dont know the exact details, but someone brought MS to court here in Germany a few years back, with the result that they can legally be sold to 'ordinary' individuals here in .de land. Some of them ship international. As I say, the language thing would need to be checked out, how that works in a 7 install. You might be lucky and find an English one... (if you need help with it at any stage feel free to PM)

I think you've pretty much covered this topic between home automation, and ideas that will change society.

With your enthusiasm for the topic(s), you may be someone who gets involved in somehow 'changing the world'. Maybe you will also find some enthusiasm here, but looking at those threads again, I suspect not.

The review you posted chimes with what else I've heard about DxO, but it's worth knowing that they've just changed the configurations of their Standard and Elite packages.  Previously, Elite was for high-end cameras.  Now, both versions handle all cameras, but you need the Elite version for the more advanced tools.  Which, almost inevitably, includes the one little feature you really, really wanted...

thanks rj.
I see a sort-of-a comparision here. The 'Essential' version seems to compare well. No noise reduction at raw level seems like the big difference - considering though that the noise reduction is one of it's strong points, that does make the decision more difficult :-/

I'm a bit ambivalent about the offer because I'm still on 32-bit Vista, which isn't supported under DxO's latest versions, and have no immediate plans to change computer/OS.  Actually, I wonder if it's a bad time to buy a new computer because the well-liked Win7 is gone, at least I believe Microsoft are no longer supporting it and full versions are sold out, the cordially-hated Win8/8.l is dying, and Win10 isn't here yet.  Sigh.

my two cents:
as someone who's only ever used OEMs for desktop machines, and has a Win7 pc and a Win8.1 laptop - I'd go for a pc without OS, and a windows 7 oem. It gets supported for another 5 years and it might not get any better (versions 8/10).
FWIW you can get multilingual OEMs (usually DELL) on ebay.de for less than 30€ .e.g. here. (Disclaimer: those OEMs are classified as german - I have used one but cant remember how much german language is involved before you can change it).

As a keen cyclist with children, I had always been in favour of the New Zealand law making it compulsory to wear a bicycle helmet. However, the outcome of that law is apparently not what one might have intuitively expected - according to a 2012 report from the NZ Medical Journal. I'd not seen it before. Very interesting statistical analysis.
Evaluation of New Zealand’s bicycle helmet law - New Zealand Medical Journal

Seems like a good article

Related:
I remember reading a report in some Sunday paper a good few years back that claimed that wearing a helmet while cycling led to drivers taking less care around cyclists, which in turn led to more accidents and fatalities.
(Sorry, no links. The statistics for that article came from France IIRC, & FWIW.)

I cycle regularly in the summer. I've found that if I cycle well, i.e. keep a very straight line, some drivers will pass dangerously close to me. So I tend to weave slightly to try and keep them more aware, and wary, of me. Not ideal, but I'm still here :-/

This one comes in two versions:

  • 1. very impressive night-sky footage, great music and editing, and -
  • 2. the same video - but they 'fix' the sky and stars, and we see the earth move around the sky

well worth watching both

I couldnt find the review, but I presume that so far it's only in the magazine itself.
Probably worth reading this page (from photoventure.com - mini-review of DXO Optics Pro 9) which more or less says that DxO is mainly of interest for raw images http://www.photovent...est-raw-processor/4/

Although it can be used to adjust JPEG images, the main purpose of DxO Optics Pro is working with raw files.

It uses DXO’s analysis of lens and camera performance to correct optical aberrations, distortions and corner shading or softness and reduce noise visibility using lens and camera profiles.

The profiles available vary depending upon the version you have, high-end and pro camera owners need the Elite version, so it’s important to check which package is correct for your camera.

It’s worth noting that the Lightroom and Photoshop versions of Camera Raw also come with camera and lens correction profiles, but they aren’t produced with the same scientific rigour as DXO’s.

Noise control is one of Optic Pro’s strengths, but you’ll need a separate editing package for image organisation or if you want to work with layers or make localised adjustments.

Whiplash I really enjoyed - well filmed, well acted, and complex enough to not get clicheed.

The Grand Budapest Hotel I found annoying initially (the way they moved very quick - or was it the film speeded up - I'm not sure now it being a couple of weeks since I saw it). It did win me over, but I wouldnt give it an oscar for anything much. Too heady: like slapstick made by intellectuals.

Yes, that's correct -
anyone else out there unable to copy Actions ?

Okay, I can confirm that this problem with copying is *nothing* to do with Splat, which is good news for you, but not so good for me :-(

Jody,
copy is broken here (with 'Action' selected). Doesnt work with Ctrl+C nor via context menu.
Didnt work in previous version either - I know it worked a short while back, but not sure which version (2 or 3 back?).

Note: I use mouser's CH&S but also tested without it.

Sanity Error here is having only 1 handrail.   :(

SanityError is my daughter's online nick name.

Why does she have an empty profile here?

why not? There's loads of 'profiles' here that aren't active, in the sense that the people are not active in the forum.
