Living Room / Pageviews are Obsolete - cool article
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2006, 06:30 PM »
...
But it's this pageviews part that I think needs to be more seriously questioned. (This is not an argument that Blogger is as popular as MySpace—it's not.) Pageview counts are as suseptible as hit counts to site design decisions that have nothing to do with actual usage. As Mike Davidson brilliantly analyzed in April, part of the reason MySpace drives such an amazing number of pageviews is because their site design is so terrible.

As Mike writes: "Here's a sobering thought: If the operators of MySpace cleaned up the site and followed modern interface and web application principles tomorrow, here's what the graph would look like:"

Nice long article announcing a new company trying to promote/sell indie computer games:

The machinery of gaming has run amok.
Instead of serving creative vision, it suppresses it. Instead of encouraging innovation, it represses it. Instead of taking its cue from our most imaginative minds, it takes its cue from the latest month's PC Data list. Instead of rewarding those who succeed, it penalizes them with development budgets so high and royalties so low that there can be no reward for creators. Instead of ascribing credit to those who deserve it, it seeks to associate success with the corporate machine. It is time for revolution.
...
Games are art. Some are bad art, of course, but some are sublime products of the human soul. We strongly believe in small teams who love what they do and risk their livelihoods and their futures on ideas that they need to instantiate and impart to gamers.

But because of the conservatism of the conventional industry, teams like this will never get funded, or achieve conventional retail distribution.

Manifesto Games is committed to helping them find a market.

nice clever simple idea.

Hi hohar and welcome.  I can try to help.

First of all note that the modification is for RC2 and hasn't been upgraded to RC3 yet, but it will be identical or nearly identical and should not be a problem at all.

Second, we use the mod every day here over and over, so it is very stable and works well.

Third, i've made a few improvements that I haven't posted yet - if you give me a week I can try to upload a new version, perhaps ready for RC3.  But that shouldn't stop you from tying to get current version installed since it will be easy to change.

Fourth, with regard to:

with this code in place in a display.template.php file copied to the theme folder i was using in my forum, the inline attachments seemed to work.  however, i didn't see any drop down menus like in the screen capture above when i was posting the topic.

the drop down menu items are very optional - we use them here in a couple of places just to help remind people what they can do.  i can post the code for some of them if you like.  basically the ONLY thing they do is add to the post stuff like
[attachthumb=1][/attachthumb]
in case the user has forgotten what keyword to use for thumbnails, etc.  basically it's just a reminder helper so the user doesnt have to remember what to type.  That's all it doest.

As for this:
also, once posted, the image was inline and the formating was off below it.  specifically, the "report to moderator" and "show ip address" fields were locate way out of the area defined for the topic.

That's a little trickier since we use a slightly non-standard template, however it really shouldnt look ANY different at all - after all the whole point is for inline images to be in the text and not effect the post otherwise.

Maybe you could post a screenshot or email me ([email protected]) so i can help a bit more.

Living Room / Re: interesting post on possible manipulation of digg.com
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2006, 04:44 PM »
Another article about digg stuff that seems problematic:

http://www.siliconva.../is_the_digg_eli.htm

Digg is falling victim to its own success, blogger Jason Dowdell charges.: http://www.marketing...hcoming-here-why.cfm

"Now that the social news site is using "karma scores" to rank stories in addition to plain Digg votes, the service has given rise to a small elite of users who determine which stories make it to the front page. "

But the system has been taken too far. Is has become practically impossible for a regular user to have his submission end up on the front page, Dowdell charges. Instead of questioning his headline writing skills, he went looking for a conspiracy - and found one: Top diggers have teamed up to create a Digg monopoly

"After contacting a few of the prominent "Diggers" in the sports section (who asked to remain nameless), I asked them all the same question on how their stories always get "dugg" and I was taken aback by the answers. These "diggers" all have some sort of advanced notification system, from email list servs, message board, and even IM bots to notify their digging network.

This seems to be a predictable outcome of digg and google, where it's become like SEO (search engine optimization), where there is a huge underground and winked-at competition between the site trying to hide their algorithms vs. the in-the-know manipulators who treat it like a game to see how to manipulate the system for monetary profit; and then the rest of the world can either try to get their snout in the door by playing the game or else lose out

Developer's Corner / Interview with book author about Lean Software Development
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2006, 04:37 PM »
From
http://www.shmula.com/ which also has several other very nice pieces on team size and software development issues.

"12 Questions with Mary Poppendieck" - long blog discussion about Lean Software Development.

"Last week, I invited the readers of shmula to pose questions to Mary Poppendieck, the author of Lean Software Development: An Agile Toolkit for Software Development Managers (Paperback), which won the Software Development Productivity Award in 2004 and, the sequel Implementing Lean Software Development: From Concept to Cash (Paperback) which will be available in early September 2006. For this interview, 12 Questions were submitted and Mary was gracious enough to answer them — the reader’s Questions and Mary’s responses are below."

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: entering license key
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2006, 03:47 PM »
Let me give this a try:
1. Run Screenshot Captor if it isn't running already.  It should appear as a "blue monitor" like icon in your system tray on the bottom right of your screen.
2. Right click on the icon and choose "About" in the menu that pops up.
3. On the far bottom left of the Screenshot Captor About Box that pops up should be a button labeled "Enter New License Key Information" - click that and paste in your full license key begining with *r1..
4. Click "Accept"
30058
I really DO hope however this won't devolve into competing "camps". :-P

BTW - In GTD it says early on that even if you don't implement the whole "system", just learning a few of the "tips and tricks" can make a big difference in how much you get done.

As Nudone says, different systems may work better for different people.  I think the main idea here is for everyone to make a serious commitment to figuring out a system that works for them, where it is GTD, GED, or some hybrid of your own making.

I think we will want to share ideas from many systems and encourage people to reflect and discuss what works for them, in an effort to get a crash course and tour in various possibilities, the better to help you decide what works best for you.

Your mission is to have a real "system" in place at the end of 3 months, that you actually follow, which will positively effect your productivity and happiness for the rest of your life.

IMPORTANT: Which techniques work best for you is going to be something you are going to have to discover.  But it's your repsonsibility to have on at the end of the 3 months - no excuses that you couldn't find one that "fit your style."  If you can't find an existing system in this 3 months, it's your job to *create* one for yourself within that timeframe that does (and share your insights with others).

Best Sites On The Web Series

There are sooooo many different web hosting companies, whether you are looking for a $2/month throwaway account or a $2000/month dedicated super server.  How's a person to choose between companies and get some good information?

There are a huge number of fake pay-per-promotion "top hosting company" websites to watch out for - so it's a particularly hard problem lately.

One of the best sites on the web for finding out about companies and dishing the dirt on them is the WebHostingTalk Forums:

Do you have another good objective trustworty site that rates hosting companies or is a good resource for finding out the inside scoop on them?

i have had your experience with your friend many times over.

some people i think can more rationally say "i can do this repetetive process for 2 hours and be done with it forever", while other of us "automaters" HATE repetetive work and would prefer 20 hours of learning to get that task done, as long as we can feel we've got some skills we can reuse in the future to do the task super efficiently, even if we know in our heart that we will never need to reuse that skill and it's just wasted brain space.

Perhaps it's fitting that as the C++ Builder contest is drawing to a close, Gothic and I were reminscing about programming in the "old days" of Borland's turbo pascal and turbo C and of console mode programs using the ibm pc's ascii character set which seemed designed with gamers in mind, and I stumbled across this nice collection of old Borland software:

well whatever it is, it's quite well done.
30068
i really think this is important thing in favor of open source.
on the other hand i guess you have to compare this with a counterpoint disadvantage

OS Advantage: no worries that you will end up hostage to a commercial company forcing you to upgrade or pay to have some proprietary migration.
OS Disadvantage: worry that the work on the project will dry up and leave you with no one you can pay to get some work done.

Borland C++ Builder Contest / Re: list of all programs sorted by categories ??
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2006, 08:23 PM »
i've been working with such a list for a while, but it's a little difficult since some programs fit into multiple categories and we are trying to figure out how to classify programs so they have the best chance.  some categories have some stiff competition.

i think it's good advice to always save such viruses until you are 100% sure you know where they came from how to deal with them in future, etc.  they can be very helpful in testing future antivirus solutions, etc.

now i'm intrigued, since you are usually a skeptic and cynic about this stuff.
how about filling us in a little on what you like so much.  and which book of his did you read? one seems older but available everywhere - the other is newer and seems not available yet in the US.
