i'm afraid i agree with both JeffK about loss of intimacy, and Zaine about holodeck sex.  that's a scary thought.
30003
Quick report from me:
I went and bought a bunch of 3x5" index cards, and 2 little plastic boxes that hold them and can be left open.
I have put both boxes on my desk (which is now otherwise empty).
In the left box i have blank cards.

When i get something i have to remember to do (an item for my todo list), i write it out and date it on a card of it's own, and file it in the box on the right.  When i complete a task i put a checkmark on the card and move it to storage in the back.

GTD author suggests using full page sheets for this kind of stuff, but i much prefer index cards.

The nices thing about using cards is you can shuffle around cards and get a tactile satisfaction of manipulating them.

And the most important part is it takes me just a few seconds to add a new TODO item card and then get it off my mind until i can come back to it, which is a key principle of GTD (get things off your mind and written down somewhere where you know you will come back to it regularly until it's done).

GOE: THE GREAT DONATIONCODER.COM 2006
GETTING ORGANIZED EXPERIMENT
- DAY I ASSIGNMENT -

JUST GETTING WARMED UP

Ok we are going to start off very very gently and then build to a gallop over the next week.

Let me start by recapping what I think will be the basic idea behind our 3 month Getting Organized Experiment (GEO), which we have also been calling GTD (for the famous Getting Things Done method):

We will start out with some GTD basics and stuff common to most approaches, and then after a while, when everyone has put into practice the key ideas for a week or so, begin to discuss other ideas, like GED, and encourage people to share their experiences of what works and doesnt.

In other words, everyone who is participating is commiting to improve their efficiency and working process in a dramatic and permanent way.  We are doing this because we all want to learn to better manage the stuff we want to accomplish, and feel less stressed doing it.

This 3 month experiment is designed to help us find what works best for us and share those experiences.  The same thing that works for me may not work for you, and vice versa.  But by the end of these 3 months, you *will* have a system in place, and a new attitude about accomplishing your tasks.

You may find that GTD is perfect for you, and never veer off; you may find that you have to invent your own system.

The important thing is that by the end of the 3rd month, you will have a new system that works for you.  There is no room for excuses about "this system is a gimick it didn't work for me!" - because if it doesnt work it's YOUR responsibility to invent a system that does.

By sharing our ideas and experiences, perhaps we can come up with some new principles and rules for our own new DC-style efficiency system.

ASSIGNMENT ONE

Your first "assignment" or task will be to create a dedicated work area for yourself, and gather some materials you will be using to get started.

1. You really should have some dedicated area with some desk space or counter space where you can concentrate and spend some time specifically on going through your todo lists, notes, etc.  You are going to want to get into the habit of going to this place and focusing on your tasks, so try to find a quiet place with a clear area that won't distract you.  Now would be a good time to clean off your desk or go shopping for a little computer desk to put in the corner.

2. Secondly, almost all of the systems we will be looking at deal with keeping lists of some sort (todo lists, idea lists, task lists, etc.)
Depending on how you work best, go to an office supply shop and buy yourself some basic stuff:
  • post-it notes
  • file folders
  • a notebook or two
  • some blank paper
  • index cards (my personal favorite)
  • stapler
  • paper clips/binders
  • calendar
  • in/out box
  • an automatic labeler (GTD author highly recommends this but its not cheap)

I think such physical things are going to be useful even if you decide to do most of your filing on the computer..

Ok, now stop procrastinating and get started with your first assignment!
Your deadline for completion is: Sunday Afternoon.

[note: i am not going to be the 'coach' for this whole GTD/GOE project, i'm just trying to kick things off before the more knowledgeable people take over]

Living Room / Article: SpiralFrog Misses the Point of Digital Music?
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2006, 01:20 PM »
When Free Isn’t Free -  SpiralFrog Misses the Point of Digital Music by Mark Glaser, 12:10PM

First, let’s congratulate the traditional music-on-wax industry for trying something new in digital music — outside of suing its customers. The largest of the music companies, Universal Music Group, announced it would offer free music downloads through a startup called SpiralFrog supported by advertising. The other big music companies are negotiating with SpiralFrog, too. Clap, clap, clap.

But before you hurt your hands with all that applause, you might want to look at the fine print of this deal. According to the New York Times and bloggers covering the story, there are some “gotchas” with the free SpiralFrog service, due to launch in December:

+ You must listen to a 90-second audio commercial for every tune you download.
+ Your music will be in the protected WMA format, not playable on iPods.
+ You will not be able to burn a CD with the music, but can listen to songs on a limited number of computers or MP3 players.
+ You will have to return to the SpiralFrog site to view ads each month or your downloaded songs will expire.

Hackers crack Apple, Microsoft music codes

In the continuation of a long-running arms race, both Apple Computer and Microsoft have seen their music protection technologies come under fire in recent days.
In the past month, separate programs have emerged to strip away the digital rights management (DRM) tools that the two technology giants use to protect music from unauthorized duplication. One of the programs counteracts Microsoft's Windows Media DRM, while the other targets Apple's FairPlay.

General Software Discussion / ZIP 2 Secure EXE - Freeware
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2006, 12:55 PM »
Nice freeware tool:

"ZIP 2 Secure EXE" is a utility program that creates self-extracting ZIP files for
Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP. Self-extracting ZIP files are executable programs (EXEs) that contain a ZIP file and the software necessary to unzip the contents. Users can unzip the contents of a self-extracting ZIP simply by running it like any other program. No other software is needed.
...
What Can You Do With This Program?
The encryption that you get with Zip utilities, including WinZip, is weak and easily broken. This utility allows you to strongly encrypt your ZIPs and at the same time makes it easy to unzip on any computer.
Use this utility to backup your security sensitive and important documents. As long as your password is secret, your files are safe.
Create software installations that only licensed customers will be able to install.

Living Room / Is Cybersex Cheating?
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2006, 12:09 PM »
This article isn't particularly insightfull, but raises some interesting questions..

By Regina Lynn| 02:00 AM Sep, 01, 2006
Two weeks ago, I was on stage with four other folks at the Second Life Community Convention, talking about cybersex. The agenda had slipped its schedule and we were running late, so when it came time for questions, we were only able to take two.
...
They trotted out The Question. The Question, which you could put to anyone from Oprah to Howard Stern, that has nothing to do with Second Life and everything to do with show hosts in love with being minor celebrities rather than having something real to say.
The Question is, of course, "Is cybersex cheating?"

I did - third time in ~550 days online - and don't think I saw even 50% credits, but I could be wrong there.
Mouser, did you really mean "send a forum message," which I take to be here, rather than a private message?

1. I've updated the link saying "send me a forum message" - so you can just click it; i meant send me a message using the forum personal message system.

2. As for you not getting your past donationcredits - every time you donate you get mailed a url link and a license.  click the url link to activate your donationcredits and deposit them into your forum account.  You can go to your profile at any time to check on all DonationCredit transactions to make sure your donation has an associated deposit transaction.  Feel free to message me through the forum if you need more help :)

Why do you call it fundraising if you give the entire money back to the user?

Well, it's up to the donator after they get their money back in the form of credits to decide how much of their credits they want to go to fund the site, how much they want to give to individual authors, and how much they want to keep in their account for later.  We expect that most people donating will give some of their donation to the site fund.  But even if they don't, any money put into their DonationCredits account will eventually be used by them to fund someone on the site, whether it's a programmer, review writer, etc., and that is what we want :)

I want to personally thank everyone who has helped make this last year at DonationCoder.com a huge success.  In addition to the financial support, we simply could not run this site without the substantial help we receive every day from the members of this site, in nearly every area.

On behalf of everyone who makes DonationCoder.com what it is, I want to express our thanks for those of you who have made a financial contribution to our success.  When you read about how some site has gotten 100 million dollars of venture capital funding or something similarly insane, you might be tempted to think that your donation can't have a meaningful effect.  But you'd be wrong.  The only funding we get is from people like you, and every dollar we receive is important to us.

Thank you for helping us bring this site to life and traveling with us while we see how good we can make it.

Official Announcements / THE 2006 DONATIONCODER.COM FUNDRAISER MONTH OF SEPTEMBER
« Last post by mouser on August 31, 2006, 11:54 PM »
IT'S THE 2006 DONATIONCODER.COM FUNDRAISER!

1. It's Time for Our Yearly Fundraiser! Woot!!
Once a year we hold a fundraising month where we ask everyone who likes DonationCoder.com to reach into their pockets and see how much they are willing to spare to support our site.  Whether you are a first time donator, or an early supporter who's ready to make another donation, your contribution means a lot to us.

Yes, it means a lot. In almost 2 years, your donations have enabled us to go from a $30/month slow hosting provider to a $260/month fast dedicated server.  It's only because of donations from people like you that we have been able to spend so much time working on the site and improving it every week.  Take a look at some of our past newsletters and you'll see that we have never stopped trying to enrich and improve this website and the software on it - and your donations have made that possible.

Your continued financial assistance is what makes this website possible.  In the year since our last fundraiser we've welcomed more coders, added tons of new features, like the Blog, the new newsletter system, the podcast radio show, and much more.  We've also released tons of new programs and added new sections to the website, like the programming school and mini reviews.  And your donations have recently allowed us to acquire a second web server which will be used to host additional coders and writers, and safely experiment with new services while maintaining the stability and security of our main server.  Your donations power our efforts.

DonationCoder.com was founded on the belief that it was possible to create an ethical and also financially viable donation-based website, despite all of the obstacles and advice to the contrary. Very few people thought it was possible to fund a site like ours on voluntary donations, but you proved them wrong in a dramatic fashion - DonationCoder.com may be the single most successful example of a software site funded entirely by small individual contributions (read more about the ideas behind the site).

2. A Special for September Donators:  Last Chance for a Lifetime Deluxe Membership!
Some very significant changes are coming after September's fundraiser, and this is your last chance to take advantage of our lifetime universal license offer:

  • Throughout September, a one-time donation of any amount will grant you a non-expiring license for all current and future software developed on our site. Everyone who has donated at any time prior to October 1st, 2006 will automatically be upgraded to this Deluxe status on October 1st.
  • After October 1st, this will change. In an effort to encourage donations directly to individual authors, after October 1st you will have to designate some donation credits (an amount of your choosing) explicitly to each author whose software you want, or else make a substantial sized donation to an author and site fund (perhaps $60) to get Deluxe status.
  • Even with this new change, keep in mind that it will be possible to keep using the programs freely forever, or else donate as little as 1 cent per author whose software you want to license.  However we believe taking advantage of the September offer will clearly offer you some advantages in convenience, status and more.

3. A Bonus for New Donators and Existing Members Alike
Every donation made in September will be credited back 100% in the form of DonationCredits (instead of the normal 50%).  This means that you will get back your entire donation in the form of credits which you can give out to individual authors on the site (or to the site fund) exactly as you see fit.  While we humbly request that you choose to allocate some of your credits to the site fund, it is entirely up to you (if you donated in August and missed this deal, send me a forum message and i will give you the full 100% credits for your recent donation as well).

4. How much should I contribute?
We know it's not easy to figure out how much you should contribute to a site like ours.  Think about what you spend on software over the course of a year, and then ask yourself if it might be worth a contribution of maybe $50, not for what we've already created, but for the new software that your contribution will help us create in the upcoming year.  Software that you will benefit from.  If you're still unsure, check out our Scientifically Proven Optimal Donation Amount Chart for some additional guidance. We accept donations in any form (PayPal, credit cards, shareware services, money orders, checks, rare gems, hand-drawn art, etc.).

5. So now we ask for your financial support once again
Your contribution will allow us to spend more time coding and creating stuff that you love (and that we love making). Every day we study new ideas, make plans for new software, experiment with new features, and try to make more new coders feel like home.  We're inviting you to look at what your past donations have been able to create.  If you like what you see already, just picture what more we can accomplish with your continued donations! We look forward to having you as a supporting member of our community, helping us create something special different together.

Your continued financial support is also critical to helping us welcome new programmers on the site - throughout September 100% of your donation will be credited back to you in the form of DonationCredits, which we encourage you to give out to the coders on the site. And if you can't afford to make a financial donation - there are tons of other ways you can help us: Tell your friends about our site and software; leave comments on download sites about your favorite programs of ours, submit bug reports, write a review, help out other members on the forum, etc.

The Dial-Up BBS Revisited

Most BBS enthusiasts know that the last outpost for BBSes has been, for some time now, through telnet on the Internet. There was a time, however, when when dial-up BBSes over analog phone lines were the rule, not the exception. And believe it or not, there are still a handful of BBSes out there that have not modernized and switched over to the ‘Net.
