Also, just because a solution is expensive doesn't mean it's bad.  So once again, i'd like to reiterate: don't disregard a product just because it isn't free.

MSE for antivirus, windows' built-in firewall, and nothing else (well, AdBlockPlus or AdMuncher - but those aren't really part of "internet security" per se). Stop wasting time, money and CPU + RAM on useless crap.
I'm not disagreeing, but can we discuss this a little bit?  I want to explore this in a little more detail.  i'd like to avoid saying, this is the best and that's it.  I'm sure others will have different opinions, no?

But if you're right, that would be a great solution.  However, we are talking about a complete solution.  What do you do if you happen to get a rootkit or anything that was able to get past the "live" defenses?

Maybe they changed that recently. There's an opt-out in the settings.
Can you confirm for me?  because I tried it less than a month ago.

Just out of curiosity, where would you go to study to become an actuary?  :)
I almost went into this.  I don't know if a specific actuary degree is offered in most universities.  In my opinion, I'd get a Statistics degree and mix in some finance/accounting courses.  Wouldn't that be just as good if not better?  What else do you need to know to be an actuary?  I always thought if you were good with statistics, you can do actuarial work fairly easily.

Maybe I'll go try F-Secure.
MSE, man... MSE.
I tried MSE.  They have that part where they say they will send your results back to microsoft.  And you can't disable it at all.  I'd even pay for it if I could get rid of it.  But I can't.

I'd rather pay for F-Secure, than to have my data being sent around.

I know this has been asked and answered a lot, but I'm doing it again:
If I have a normal wifi router, do I really need a software firewall?  I've never felt like my software firewall was particularly useful, I just have it because I'm scared to take it off.  I have no other valid reason for it.
3007
It would only be a GUI around several SDKs.
If anyone has a few 10K to throw at initial licenses, then a few 100k to throw at the project, then it might be a maybe.
Sorry -- I might be a bit jaded from being through this before.
huh?  I don't get what you said.  If you are saying that we are going to CREATE our own software suite, that's not what I meant.  I just meant let's create a dc-approved list of software that as a whole would accomplish the same thing as the "official" internet security suites.  All we're doing is recommending existing programs.

General Software Discussion / Re: Can we talk about mkv files here please?
« Last post by superboyac on January 12, 2011, 10:19 AM »
Would anyone here be able to show me a screenshot of how they navigate through a single mkv file?  How do you go to the next chapter?  How do you enable/disable commentary tracks?  Screenshots...not text, please.

[note to self]
Add a column for categories such as: Prevention, Infection Removal, something for stuff like ads that are not necessarily harmful but just annoying, online utilities, emergency boot utilities.  Or maybe I should just use the first column for this and use different words or something.

I have an idea I'd like to try.  It seems like I am pretty unhappy with just about all of the AV packages out there that are supposed to be total "Internet Security" packages.  So, since we are all knowledgeable software users, maybe we can come up with our own suite of software that is, in a sense, DC-approved.

So, the idea here is not to have just one "best" solution.  So we should avoid most of the programs labeled as "internet security".  We need to figure out all the categories for software that we need, and just use multiple applications to get the job done.  The first thing we should figure out are the categories.  I don't even know how to do that!  I still don't get the difference between a virus and malware, yet there are programs that are antivirus programs, and others that are anti-malware programs.  And there are others that are ani-rootkit.  I don't get it.  So that will also be part of the discussion.

There can be more than one "best" per category, but part of the effort will be making sure these programs all play nice with each other.  Oh, and they don't have to be free.  So don't say this software is better than that because it's free (a lot of people do that).  Also, let's not forget the "corporate" versions of the popular brands, which tend to be different animals than their more popular counterparts.

I think I'm just about done with Kaspersky.  I've been getting too many false positives lately, and it keeps popping up warnings about things (MS office, FARR).  You know, truth be told, I have no idea if something is a false positive or not, how are you supposed to know?  And now I'm suspicious so it's even worse.

I have like 2 years left on my license, but I may just forget about it.  Maybe I'll go try F-Secure.

Great story, 40hz!  I remember reading a book about how to dress well (men) for business, and the author had a whole section about how IBM got the advantage in the sales market because of their strict dress code and the psychological implications of it.  Spare necktie...crazy.  Reminds me of a mad men episode I've seen where Draper keeps spare shirts in his drawer at work because, well, he has LOTS of affairs.
I'm totally going to check out the Spotlight program.  That eye candy is all good stuff. I love all those blinking lights and buttons.  My cousins used to joke with me when we were kids because all I would want is something that had a bunch of those translucent rubber buttons, and you just press them and they light up.  None of that hard plastic buttons, though.

[edit]yeah, spotlight on windows is pretty bitchin.

OK, I'm totally serial...
those are the greatest looking progress bars I have ever seen.  Someone please, PLEASE put one of these in your applications.

Well here's a guy who really loves progress bars.
Ok, that deserves a level 2 LOL:

I was seriously looking at that and thinking, "Man, they are all just so...beautiful!"

Oh, and I've been guilty of inserting delay timers in two installers I've made, because installation was too damn fast... even on the old machines those several years back when I did the software :-[ :-[ :-[
That's actually nice!  It makes me a little uncomfortable when it goes by instantly, i always think something went wrong.  (that's what she said)

sorry

Ok, let me move up to top priority adding code that responds when drives are plugged in or removed.  That's been mentioned before in a slightly different context -- a cool idea to have certain buttons or bars show when a drive is inserted.
yeah, that would be even better.  I just thought it would be harder for you do implement.

And as an added incentive, mouser, you'd be able to give yourself one of those very cool superman badges.

One of the saddest things that has happened in modern times is that almost everything you ask your computer to do is done instantly.

Now most people will tell you that's a great thing, but I'm here to tell you that I remember the days when I would start a program compiling and go off to have dinner while it worked.  Those were the days.

There is nothing quite like knowing your computer friend is hard as work on something while you go take a nap or grab a bite to eat.

That's always been one of the appeals of doing scientific work on the computer -- I once ran a program on my pc that took 2 months to run and it was an unadulterated pleasure.

Progress bars are just the icing on the cake :)
That's true!  I totally miss my lab research days.  That free schedule was kind of unique and cool.  Now, I have to just work set hours.  It was fun going to lab in the morning, letting something run, go do something else for a few hours, come back at night.  It was a fun lifestyle.  Now, everything is so ordinary and rote.

Maybe it's just me, but I love watching a good progress bar.  What makes it good?  i don't know.  Each progress bar has its own special personality.  You have the classic XP progress bar.  You have the different flavors that come with the installation packages.  You have the jelly-like, blue-striped Mac progress bar.  My favorite kind of progress bar is the kind that has lots of stuff going on: multiple bars, lines within lines (think Winrar).  I also like smaller increments.  I hate it when progress bars skip through the thing in big 25% chunks.  I want to see every percent, it gives me pleasure for some reason.

Ok here's one (you asked for it):
Could there be something that indicates if a shortcut in a menu is a portable shortcut?  Some kind of icon or symbol, or something like that in the preference tree?  Because my launchbar has a mix of portable and local shortcuts, and I know you can see the drive letter in the application address, but it would be nice to see some kind of special color or light indicating that this is a portable shortcut.

Also, how about a refresh button or command for the active menus?  Let me explain, if I start LBC and my thumbdrive isn't in the computer yet, the portable lbc file won't open (obviously, because it can't find the file).  So after I stick in the thumbdrive, I have to close LBC and reopen it so both menus now open.  If there was a way to "refresh" it in a case like that, I'd just click the refresh button and it would see that the thumbdrive is there now and open that menu.  Same goes for if I remove the thumbdrive.  Does that make sense?

So, instead of saying I'm 6' tall, I'd say I'm 1829 mm tall.  So I'm going to do that now...it's such an asshole thing to do.  Because now it's up to the other person to figure out what that exactly means.  Nobody knows what 1829 mm looks like,
...except for the assholes living in the rest of the world, who have no concept whatsoever of the ass-backwards weird non-standardized thing means, but have a good grokking of SI units :)
Haha...i remember learning SI units in high school.  I got all passionate about it, and wondered why the hell everyone doesn't just use the SI units?  They play so nicely together!  No...we have to go and convert this and that.
