Living Room / Re: Haiku Poetry Messages for Microsoft Errors
« Last post by Darwin on February 29, 2008, 12:21 PM »
Hi Lew - of course you can! I should make an effort, I suppose, to find out the source... the piece of paper posted at work is OLD and it looks like it came from a bulletin board posting somewhere... I'll google the title ( :-[ ok - that's how much of an effort I made before posting - none...) and post what I can come up with.

Living Room / Haiku Poetry Messages for Microsoft Errors
« Last post by Darwin on February 29, 2008, 11:39 AM »
This is tacked to a cork board in my cubbyhole at work - no idea who put it there or what the source is, but I've been wanting to share it for a long time. Finally got around to photocopying, scanning, and extacting the text from it. There are some real gems in here!

In Japan, they have replaced the impersonal and unhelpful Microsoft error messages with Haiku poetry messages. Haiku poetry has strict construction rules each poem has only 17 syllables; 5 syllables in the first, 7 in the second, 5 in the third. They are used to communicate a timeless message, often achieving a wistful, yearning and powerful insight through extreme brevity.

Here are 16 actual error messages from Japan:

  • The web site you seek Cannot be located, but Countless more exist.
  • Chaos reigns within. Reflect, repent, and reboot. Order shall return.
  • Program aborting: close all that you have worked on. You ask far too much.
  • Windows NT crashed. I am the Blue screen of Death. No one hears your screams.
  • Yesterday it worked. Today it is not working. windows is like that.
  • Your file was so big. It might be very useful. But now it is gone.
  • Stay the patient course. of little worth is your ire. The network is down.
  • A crash reduces Your expensive computer To a simple stone.
  • Three things are certain: Death, taxes and lost data. Guess which has occurred.
  • You step in the stream, But the water has moved on. This page is not here.
  • Out of memory. we wish to hold the whole sky, But we never will.
  • Having been erased, The document you're seeking must now be retyped.
  • Serious error. All shortcuts have disappeared. Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

Isn't that better than: "your computer has performed an illegal operation"?

Well... no worries, Deozaan - you're handwriting is still better than mine. I'll prove it to you and the world soon...  :o

I thought the lower case d was some sort of stylized thing - I inferred that you're a musican, Deozaan, because it looks like a musical note!

Nope. No database support either, as far as I can tell. At least not with default settings (I tried searching for some stuff in some Access files. No joy. One thing that irks me a bit about WDS is the lack of options... it's hard to tweak it. Anyway, I'm enjoying it as an Outlook indexer and still love Archivarius. As you note, the plain text approach does make it lightning fast
3006
Sorry to report, Armando, that (at least out of the box) WDS does NOT index comments in Word documents... I'll play with the settings and see if I can get it to do so... Archivarius DOES do this. I wish I could get Archivarius to use Stellent viewers and to index PST files in a timely manner  :(
3007
Hmm... I was wrong - Windows Desktop Search HAS been indexing My Documents (view this thread to see what I'm talking about  :o) and I quite like it. It's light on resources, can be configured to truly lurk in the background and it runs searches very quickly. I also love the fact that it displays many documents with their formatting preserved. A nice option, I think. I still love Archivarius and doubt that WDS will replace it, but I think that until Archivarius' PST file support if solved WDS will COMPLEMENT it...

EDIT: posted link to the correct thread...
3008
Agreed, Armando. I'm not stressing about it, but thought that I'd update people about the change. I was stressing about Outlook and RAM when I had 512MB of the stuff. Now I'm running 2GB and it really isn't a big deal...

[off-topic]I'll post about it in the other thread... I'm loving it with Outlook 2007 but haven't tried it with My Documents, so will set it up and let you know![/Off-topic]

Living Room / Re: Kodak (Complaint)
« Last post by Darwin on February 28, 2008, 04:38 PM »
I did record the serial number. It was required as part of the RMA process. That's why I became suspicious of receiving a refurbished product when I noticed the serial number sticker looked as though it had been peeled away. It has the same serial number, but it looks as though it may have been removed from my original camera and placed on a refurbished one. I'm also suspicious because of the work order saying what the problem was and what the solution was, it doesn't sound like what the problem was at all!

That's even more disturbing. I guess you have to decide how big a fuss you want to make - to my mind it sounds as if you've had a substitute camera shipped back to you which is no doubt illegal - particularly given the attempt to hide the fact. The issue, though, is how do you go about fighting this? Chris' advice is excellent: contact a consumer advocacy group and find out what you can realistically expect to accomplish.

Have to agree with Chris on this one (about walking away) but would add that you can walk away with a lesson (that we should all take note of): always record the serial number of the equipment that you send off for repair. Prefereably a photograph. I don't know if this would have made a difference in this case or not, but it would bring peace of mind...

FWIW, I think that it is ridiculous to send you an item that has clearly been heavily used and soiled. If you decide to smear Kodak over this, they've brought it on themselves!

[off topic] Hummmm... thanks Darwin. So maybe I've never experienced the problem because I'm using Outlook a lot, so it gets minimized, maximized, trayed, etc. quite a bit during the day. Still, I've never seen use it more RAM than firefox  ;D... And, by what you say, it also seems that this RAM is easily gained back (unlike firefox for instance). [/off topic]

Just an update: while this works well for Outlook 2003, it isn't *quite* as effective with Outlook 2007. I find 2007 RAMPS up RAM and if I minimize it to the tray will drop to about 3000KB but then rapidly balloon to about 22000KB and stay there... In many other ways it works better, though, in my opinion. E.g. actions that I perform on messages are done much more quickly. Also, the tight integration with Windows Desktop Search is nice (though, of course, you have to install WDS... but you can configure it to do nothing by keep your PST indexed and NOT to run in the tray so not the end of the world  :)).

Does your recent discovery imply that these other problems are 'fixable' if we can get the authors' attention? A little alarming that they might seem to have their heads in the sand!   :(

I *hope* so... I've been following the forum discussion and I think that the developers are keen to get this sorted out. However, I uninstalled the version I was running last week (I miss the functionality of Xobni) for a variety of reasons. However, running Outlook 2007, while it breaks LookOut, works wonderfully with LookOut's successor Windows Desktop Search. I'm pretty happy with it, for now. Still, I'll be following Xobni's development

OK - here's another (Deozaan's post reminded me of it): big trucks with confederate flags plastered all over them. Actually, scratch that - the confederate flag being displayed at all... Why? Well, for a start, there's what it stands for (or perhaps that should read what it's come to stand for) and then there's the fact that I live in a small town in Canada. CANADA. I wonder how many people in Georgia drive around with the Red Ensign displayed on their car or truck or have it hanging in their bedroom window? Actually, in four trips to Georgia (Atlanta and Savannah) I don't remember every seeing a Canadan flag, Red Ensign or a confederate flag. Yet there are a lot of confederate flags here...

DISCLAIMER: I'm not picking on Georgia. I have family there. Blame the Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee. Actually, that's probably why people here display the Confederate flag - they have no idea of what it stands for...

Incidentally, I literally JUST updated to Office 2007 Enterprise (work provided the software - I', totally backed up in case I hate it) and I can confirm that the problem above re: Outlook shutdown doesn't affect 2007...

It's OK stuff, it's just that overtime it congeals into a residue. Never use it in a lock, for example. Good quality penetrating oil is much better. Worst that will likely happen is that the switch will eventually get sticky and you'll need to clean the residue and try again... Sorry, my first posting was more curt than I had intended (excuse: kids. Loud kids. Frazzled nerves).

Crumb! I have Outlook minimized to tray *most* of the time and hadn't tried shutting down Outlook while Xobni was running... I can confirm that Outlook's process remains running when Xobni is installed. I don't have time right now but I'll post on the Xobni forum to this effect as well. I like this addon A LOT but can't risk PST file corruption (and I resent having multiple processes running needlessly).

PS most effective way I ever tried was Tenebril's Ghostsurf 2005... There's also an opensource option that I've never tried. I'll try to rememer what it's called and post a link after work.
