I will soon experiment with Onenote again, based on some of IainB's ideas here.  I am puzzled (fascianted?) by one comment...that he recommends getting training for it.  This is interesting because I always saw it as a somewhat simple application, in the sense that I wish it did more.  But it sure sounds like there is a lot under the hood that I haven't looked into.  I am also more flexible with this stuff than I once was in my ultimate notetaker searching, and I'm willing to let certain things go now if I can actually have my notes in one spot.

20 years now I've been trying out notetakers.  it never ends.
302
Boy Iain, sometimes you blow me away.  I have always avoiding committing to Onenote, but you make some strong points...with many years experience with it.

Right now, i've settled on a lot of random pieces of software to do everything, but I am interested in some of your suite integration techniques that you value.  I probably use up to 5 notetakers and outliners on a regular basis right now.

Supberboyac,

saving/importing/exporting customized sets would be perfect
Can you elaborate?
J River stores your custom shortcuts in a JRiver-Resource.xml file, so you have them in a format you can read outside the application, do you mean export from J River to foobar or foobar to J River?
What I mean, essentially, is just a GUI to manage all that.  In the foobar request, the reason why it couldn't be done was because the configuration file was unreadable.  Since this is xml, we should be able to do it with a GUI.

Is Excel the most dangerous software in the world?
Well, whilst calling it the most dangerous software might be stretching it a bit, it could certainly be argued from a historical perspective that they had the potential to be "dangerous" and sometimes had actually proven to be so in fact.
My experience has been that Excel and Access have generally been the de facto financial black holes for a great deal of labour costs, where often non-IT personnel had spent many hours inventively developing one-off or prototype spreadsheet models and access database applications as business solutions to do often quite clever and useful things that simply could not have been done (at the time) in a timely or cost-effective manner using IT otherwise. Often these one-off solutions were tweaked to the stage where they could become so useful that they were commercially indispensable, and might even form a large part of the core legacy solutions for an enterprise.

A great strength of Excel and Access lies in their "tweakability" by the user - the extent of user control. That is also their Achilles Heel - there is a profound scope for human error in developing the logic and formulae in the models/applications, and that is why, from the perspective of stochastic and accounting accuracy, the models need to be independently audited and verified, but certainty in that regard (that all errors have been identified and fixed) is something that was and remains notoriously extremely difficult to achieve - despite the growth of things like spreadsheet auditing tools.

However, having worked on complex models such as ITEM (the UK Independent Treasury Econometric Model) and climate models of the North Sea, I would recommend skepticism towards any plea of incompetence - the "Oh dear, there was an error in the [insert name of scam] financial model" argument. These people aren't necessarily the fools they might have us believe.
For example, in "JPMorgan’s model had not captured this at all...".
Yeah, right.
yes!  the last bit is so true!

It's an interesting statement.  What I understand from this and from what I've experienced in my career, excel is used in a very versatile way in the computer world.  It's a very powerful application, very common (possibly the most common application in the world).  If you spend any time using a computer for a living, you probably use excel.  I've seen it used in crazy ways, from prototyping applications (using the grid to draw stuff), to hardcore database-like applications that should be done on access or something built for that.  Excel hits that sweet spot as the go-to tool for anything.

Now, I've also seen these financial guys use excel in their stuff too, and it's crazy.  Like i said, it should be done in a proper database.  And a lot of people just do it in excel.  There's a joke that it's called "excel-gineering".  And auditing an excel document is a nightmare if something goes wrong.  Finding that wrong formula, wrong cell, wrong link, etc. is a terrible excercise.  And if important things are built into it, yea, i can see it being considered a dangerous tool in a very round-about, abstract, indirect kind of way.

But in that sense, the internet-connected-computer is the most powerful weapon ever created.  or is it the h-bomb?

OK, I had this idea thread earlier:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=40216.0

Now I've switch to J River for my music player.  As good of a product that it is, it also doesn't make modifying shortcuts easy.  With an xml file, you can change stuff.  My idea is to provide a gui for changing these commands, as well as backing up and exporting/importing the commands.

The details of the configuration are here:
http://wiki.jriver.c...l_Keyboard_Shortcuts

I'm willing to pay/donate for this gui.

foobar actually has a good sample of a gui for this.  (They just don't have a way to save or import/export the commands).  I like the ability to set the hotkey for global vs. while in the application.  Below is a screenshot of it:
Screenshot - 11_11_2015 , 1_30_10 PM.png

something like that, plus saving/importing/exporting customized sets would be perfect.

SUPER has not recommended because there are so many more alternatives now without the confusing interface or crazy website.  I use xmedia recode now.

I can't spend any more money for a while because I'm saving for my girl friend's 18th birthday present.

Yeah, I'm 81 years old--gotta problem with that? ;)

i haven't had this same exact problem, but i have done various types of restores and installations.  I've never used system restore much nor do i have much trust in it.  What i recommend, even though it doesn't fit exactly what you have requested is this:
--copy all your non-standard directories with data over to an external drive (downloaded stuff, temp folders if you have any)
--copy your "Users" directory since this has all your software settings
--copy your program files directories (both x86 and regular)
--use the windows easy transfer feature for yet another backup (you now have 2-3 backups for settings)
--make an image of the whole OS drive if possible
--reinstall windows from scratch
--reinstall all your software
--if a particular software doesn't look right to you or annoys you in terms of the settings, replace the appdata folder of it with what you saved in the users directory

i've never found a better way than this for restoring programs and settings with a fresh install.  And i've not had that much luck with non-destructive reinstallations.  this always works for me.

don't take this one seriously, it was just a thought that entered my mind as i was using the new site...

i need the ability to resize columns manually!!!  silly, i know.  I keep looking at the different unread posts pages and feeling like i wish this were excel and i could drag the column sizes around.

Here's a stupid simple hack using linkman as an option...
I can easily create a bookmark for linkman with a click.
in linkman, it just gets stored in a big list.  It can be sorted by "launch count".  So if you reverse sort it where the lowest counts are at the top, that means the ones on top are the ones you haven't visited yet.  So it's kind of a self-sorting list.  If you click to read an article, it's count increases and goes to the bottom.  It's doable.

Good thread! Like you, superboyac, I miss the heydays of RSS. I still use RSS when possible but only a local RSS reader app on the desktop PC.

In addition I store .url files with tags locally. Still very useful when researching a topic since you can combine .url files (with tags in filename) with images, pdfs and any other file in a folder (with subfolders). Everything is easy to search with FARR/Everything/SilverSearcher too. But I have no really good system for syncing and using that with Android. Lately I've experimented with using a google docs document as "base" for a project, with pasted url links, notes and a related docs folder with other files.

I also use Pocket since it is so easy and quick to add to the pocket list from both PCs and from Chrome on android phones. But I dislike the pocket app/webapp and tend to use only the pocket addon in firefox in list mode and launch items from there into the browser for reading. I hate having to wait for the Android Pocket app to load and sync slowly because it downloads the content and nudges me to read stuff inside the app.

I'd love to see two things happen:
1. a tool that, like pocket, lets me add stuff very quickly to a synced list from any browser on any platform *and* lets me on any platform browse *only* a minimalist version of that list (page title and url, with word/date filtering) for quick launching into a browser.
2. A minimal websynced RSS reader that likewise *only* stores urls, page titles and dates (content snippets, no images, etc) lets you star and delete items but apart from that only has one long list of items per feed. It should of course also runs on all platforms.

I think that many attempts at making webapp RSS managers or similar things have failed because they've tried to do too much.
Nice, yes, you seem to have more experiences than i do.  I think the problem with RSS is simply the content control is with each site, so the rss software can only do so much.  I always feel i'm clicking far too much whenever i do anything with rss.  click the article, click to expand, click to launch in browser, click to close browser, click to go back, click click click.  it's like 3x too many clicks for everything.

forget rss.  your 2 suggestions are pretty good.  just a list of links and some cool features to manage them.  maybe linkman can do something.

After Google Reader died, I just stopped reading my daily feeds.

It was kind of weird at first. But in hindsight I've realized I don't miss them. That said, I've found new ways to waste hours of my mornings catching up on news.
same story with me basically.  I bet i could hack together some kind of system using just links.  I mean, that's good enough for me.  An easy way to add links to a list, and then somehow the list monitors whether i've read those links or not.  maybe there's a firefox plugin that could do it...something like this workflow:
--see a link to read later, click something to add to the list
--when you are ready to read, go to the list and click the link.
--once the link is clicked thru the list, the list knows you've read it and stores it as completed.

now that i wrote it out, it looks like something that probably already exists.

can't the library features of windows 7 do the thing where you make two separate folders into one library, and all the files appear in one place like it's one folder?

Power Desk...brings back a lot of memories for me.  One of the first programs I geeked out on.  Definitely my first alternative file browser.
319
JJ, the limited content length...it's the one thing that i could never get past with rss.  It just bugs me way too much, and showing full articles is dependent on the provider.  I'm going to check out that workflow in the first post.  My feeling is that there is no sophisticated reader for this type of thing yet, and maybe there never will be due to how the whole thing works.  I don't think we'll ever get to the point anytime soon where you can use a software to read these articles and have the articles appear the way they naturally do on the actual websites.  So maybe what I'll try with Pocket or something is just to keep track of the links i visit.  instead of a nice rss feed, just list of links i've visited or plan to visit.  something like that.
320
Ever since the death of RSS a couple years ago, I haven't ever recovered.  (I know it's not really dead, but I've labeled the years after 2013 as the post-RSS era).
How are you guys keeping track of what you read?  I was never a big fan of rss anyway.  I've tried website-watcher, and things like that.  I like reddit as a place to collect things to read that are interesting to others, but I don't have any way to organize my own stuff...all the blogs, podcasts, etc. that i follow.  Anyone using any interesting software or tools for it?

Don't you just want to have a list of commonly visited sites, and then keep track of which articles/links you haven't read yet.  Maybe the ability to queue it in some fashion, so you can have a list of things to read later.  I'm currently not doing anything fancy anymore, just visiting the sites in the browser basically manually.

This idea is interesting:
Hey everyone.

I wanted to share something that I have been doing and that is keeping me productive but still "in-the-know" on my favorite blogs and websites.

I use a site called IFTTT[1] .com (If This Then That, it allows you to setup a type of real life loop that checks for something, and does something if that happens.) to do most of the work for me.

With IFTTT I have setup a recipe for each site that I follow. It checks the RSS feed of that site, and if it is updated, it posts the article to my Pocket[2] reader account.

For sites that have a TON of content, and I don't necessarily read all of it, I have an IFTTT recipe setup so that if I start something in google reader, it sends it to pocket.

Every morning, I scan the headlines in Google Reader, and if something catches my attention I star it. All other websites and blogs that I follow and want to read are automatically put into Pocket.

Now, whenever I have some down time and I want to read articles that interest me. Rather than taking my 10 minute break to slog through some RSS feeds, I just go to pocket and everything is of interest and ready to be read.

Additionally, you can setup IFTTT to automatically add a video that you have marked as "Watch Later" on YouTube into Pocket. So when I want to watch videos, rather than getting distracted by kittens for 30 minutes, I go to Pocket and watch exactly what I need to.

I wanted to share this with you all, in case you hadn't heard of either Pocket[3] or IFTTT[4] . Hopefully you will find it as awesome as I have.

It's pretty good overall.  To me it feels like the old look, with more of the modern minimalist elements.  A little brighter looking.  I've been preferring dark ("night") themes on sites lately, but that's a personal thing.  Although, it does seem to be taking off...the dark themes.

I've had no real issues or bugs.  I had to spend a minute to find the unread posts button, which is probably my most used button.

Living Room / Re: Startups and the Big Lie
« Last post by superboyac on August 29, 2015, 06:15 PM »
One of the lesser-publicized facts of the recent hacking of the Ashley Madison website, is that nearly all of the female accounts were fake -- created by the company to make it look like the site was active and popular: http://gizmodo.com/a...-database-1725558944

This seems to be the standard operating procedure of website these days, where seeming to be popular is a necessary first lie.

I remember when the internet explosion was happening.  I checked out a few of the dating sites.  Membership was free.  But communicating with women cost money.  I got these invites from women with pictures.  It was obvious that the women who posed for the pictures would not have any trouble getting dates.  More like they would have trouble keeping undesirable guys from communicating.  I never sent a communication because I was sure the scam was send invites to suckers(er, I mean male clients of the service) to get them to pay to send messages to the babes.  Then the babes beg off for some contrived reason.  They have to because they are fictional characters.  It is not worth the effort to try to get $5 or $10 back so the suckers just cancel the service.  Same old scam, new ad copy.  :)
I also used the dating services and still do once in a while.  Once you do it, you develop an eye for what is real and what isn't.  From my own experiences, 80% of profiles are unreliable.  Most of them are straight up fake.  if they are not fake, there are pretty significant lies going on regarding their relationship status.  There are also a ton of lies in how people represent themselves.  So my conclusion after the whole thing was that it's fun to try once in a while, I got some dates out of it.  Some were good, most were not.  But that's real life also.  Ultimately, I felt they didn't make anything easier for me.

Now, on the flip side, I have had friends who have had success with these things, including long committed relationships, and even marriage ina couple of cases.  The difference was this...most of them paid for the premium services.  if they didn't, then there were factors like this involved...in some non-urban places, it's hard to meet people, or there just aren't a lot of people (small towns).  So in those cases, these things work better because there is more of a genuine intention behind it.  In a huge urban environment like a los angeles, they don't work well at all IMO.  Because the girls are already being hit on constantly in every kind of way...online, offline, gym, street, work, etc.  Same with the men to an extent.  So for some reason, it just doesn't work well.  at least it doesn't make anything easier.

Now, the exception is NY.  For some reason, for a guy, NY is great for dating online.  i don't know why.  LA is terrible, NY is unbelievable.

They're a little "gabby" but still pretty good.

Oh!...Hey!...You ok? Here...just sit a moment and take some deep breaths!

the funny thing is...after my initial experience, i may have become so paranoid to avoid it again, i just may do this!!  hey, it's just me, so all the users are just different versions of me!
