Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Bits Du Jour and GAOTD one-day deals
« Last post by cthorpe on January 29, 2008, 09:30 PM »
I also didn't get the impression that we were going to have a place where every single offering that comes down the pipe is advertised.  I was thinking more along the lines of a certain place that people could post about interesting programs, good deals, etc that wouldn't get lost in here with all of the longer term offers.  That way, someone will know immediately that there is a timetable for the offer.

I think a sticky would be a great idea.  I have purchased quite a few applications through bitsdujour.  And let's not forget woot, though that not software.  I very rarely even bother with the giveawayoftheday and their games offerings, however they occasionally offer something really good, so I check them daily (I have both GOTD and bits feeds on my start page).

That's right.  Look for the drawing to close at or around midnight Central Standard Time with winners posted shortly afterwards.

There is a program called Temptation Blocker (http://www.webjillio...-temptation-blocker/) that allows you to restrict certain programs from being easily run.  Unfortunately, any user can disable the block, but they must type in a long random string of characters to do so.  This might at least deter your kids from the easy distractions, but it won't do much if they really want to be off task.

In all cases, the discount applies to whatever version is available for sale at the site.  In many cases, you can use the code for upgrade purchases, additional licenses, or other programs offered by the developer.  As for giveaways, they will also be the latest version.

This is a quick and dirty review of ScreenSteps that is currently on bitsdujour.  I don't have time for a full mini-review, as the discount has 2 hours remaining.  Discounted price is $19.9 USD.  That purchase gets you all 1.x version of the software (currently at 1.2.1).  The program is available for both Windows and Mac.  One registered license can be used on both Win and Mac by a single user.

Disclaimer - I am not affilliated with the developer of the software or bitsdujour in any way, and I am not receiving any compensation for this review or any sales it generates.  I am just a customer who purchased the software during this current discount after running the trial for just a few minutes.  There may be bugs or other problems with the software that I have not encountered.

ScreenSteps helps you create visual tutorials and HOW-TOs on your computer very quickly.  You use it like a screen capture program as you perform the steps that you want included in the tutorial.  After you are finished with all the steps, you go into the program's interface and add explanatory text to each step.  In addition, you can add graphical annotations like arrows, circles, highlighting, numbering, etc to the images.  Once you are finished with the steps, the program exports the tutorial to an html file and images or to a PDF.  This could be great for doing quick documentation for your own programs and the like.

Video screencast from the developer.

I created a very quick tutorial for compressing images.  This took me less than five minutes from the minute I fired up ScreenSteps to publishing it on my host.
http://carlthorpe.co...compress_a_file.html

There isn't a lot to the interface of the program.  This is a plus, because it is easy to learn how to use it.  More advanced users may look for more control, and it can be found in customizing of the templates used for the creation of html files.  I haven't looked at that yet, but it seems like you can do quite a bit with it from the samples offered by the site:
http://carlthorpe.co...compress_a_file.html
http://carlthorpe.co...compress_a_file.html

The PDF export is a little iffy, as you don't get much control over how it looks, but it works well enough:
http://carlthorpe.co..._compress_a_file.pdf

Overall, I am impressed with the ease of use for this program.  As I teach 6th graders at a 1:1 laptop school, I am constantly showing them how to do different things with their iBooks.  This program will allow me to quickly create tutorials for them to host on my school website.

December Software Giveaway

We are gearing up for the January Fund-Raising Extravaganza A Go-Go, so we don't have any discounts for December, but that doesn't mean we will leave you empty handed.  Neville Franks has graciously donated a few copies of Surfulater for us to give away this month.  Be on the lookout for a discount on this program, and quite a few other exciting offers in January.

The drawing will be open until December 31, 2007.  Enter today!

Living Room / Re: SuperboyAC's DC blog #5 (The State of MiniDisc and Sony)
« Last post by cthorpe on November 26, 2007, 04:34 PM »
I have a MD player.  It is definitely cooler looking and much more satisfying to hold and use than any mp3 player I have ever had the opportunity to get my hands on.  Also, I came across Sony branded MD 8 packs selling for $1.00 on Wal-Mart's clearance shelf about a year ago, so I had tons of storage space.  Unfortunately, getting music onto it is such a hassle because of the horrid sony soundstage software.

Now that I got a Zune off Woot, I can't see myself using the MD player often if at all.  If I ever get my hands on a powered mic, however, I will probably start using it to record my lectures at school.

Just a quick note to let you know that discounts and giveaways will be posted shortly.

At this time, we have the following discounts on tap:

DefenseWall HIPS - 30% discount with quite a few licenses to give away
Gizmo reviewed this on Techsupport Alert and had good things to say:
Of the products tested DefenseWall was the outstanding performer with near perfect test results across the board. Additionally, it is small and consumed few computer resources.

It's exemplary performance could be attributed in part to the fact that this was the only sandbox based HIPS product in this series of reviews.
The review is located here: www.techsupportalert.com/security_HIPS.htm (right now his site appears to be down)

CPUIdle - 30% discount and possibly licenses to give away
This program was mentioned favorably by lanux128 here: https://www.donation...87.msg72537#msg72537
however in one of the threads, i noticed that there was a mention of CpuIdle to "cool" the system. i've heard of these type of software before, such as Rain, CpuCool and WinHLT but didn't think much of them. but among others, CpuIdle claims to "enhance stability" and i was desperate enough to try it out..

and after several days of usage, i am happy to report that CpuIdle manages to tame the high cpu activity and make the system usable. the spikes in cpu usage does occur, though not as frequently as before.. and since my other alternative is to get a new motherboard, this is much welcomed.

Does FD-ISR play well with disk defragmenters and disk repartitioners?

Jane is right that excluding the $isrbin file is recommended when running a defragmenter.  If you don't the program may not be able to find it properly on the next boot.  If it can't find it, you won't get the preboot isr screen, and won't be able to change snapshots.  Fortunately, once the computer boots once, it will relocate the irsbin file and it won't be an issue after that.

General Software Discussion / Re: Can you recommend Selkie Rescue Data Recovery??

From what I can tell, it just lets you boot a computer that is having system problems and access files on the discs.  It looks like something you could do with a BartPE disc.

Official Announcements / Re: September 2007 Software Discounts and Giveaways
« Last post by cthorpe on September 22, 2007, 11:48 PM »
Actually, if you go to the site and check it out you will notice that you can get both discounts on the same order. This means that you get no less than a 50+30% discount in total. Also, it is impossible to not get the 50% discount no matter if you follow the link in the DC discount post or if you visit the site. That means that nobody taking advantage of the DC offer could have purchased it at at anything more than $20.96 while this offer is/has been running.

Thanks for clearing that up for us.  I did mention that the 30% was in addition to the 50% in the members only section, and I have gone ahead and edited the first post in this thread to include that info as well.

using junction points:

deleting doesnt seem to be an option -
I was thinking - great I can store some of the my docs stuff elsewhere,
but now they (all the folders within the junction point) are read only & I cant delete them*,
well I could with unlocker but for everyday use it dosent seem suitable for this purpose at any rate

*or change their status [EDIT]

shame...

That's odd.  I've never had a problem like that.  Are you sure the problem occurred because of making junctions and didn't already exist?

What about http://www.mabiweb.com/index.php

It is a play-by-web site for a number of strategy board games.  If you select "Completed Games" on the left under "Game Manager" you can get a list of recently completed games.  When you select one, you can see the game board at the end of the game, and get a full log of all the moves made by the players.  The completed games list only has the last 7 days, but you may be able to get access to older logs if you ask.

Living Room / Re: encrypting an already encrypted file
« Last post by cthorpe on September 05, 2007, 03:53 PM »
I can't see how it would be an issue unless the second encryption program is known for making corrupt files.  But then that would be a problem even if you weren't layering or chaining encryption.  The encryption program won't care if the file it is working with is plain text, a regular word document, or an encrypted file.  Then when you decrypt, it will just put it back to however it was before you encrypted.
