General Software Discussion / Re: Irfanview4 released
« Last post by Nighted on May 10, 2007, 04:06 AM »
IrfanView suxx0rs!!!!  :P

FastStone lets you grab thumbnails, rearrange them and then rename them in the new order. Plus the thumbs aren't obstructed when selected, plus it's portable, and the zoom function is awesome. Also, for just viewing images, there's nothing faster that I can think of.
302
Keep that hard drive cool. Make sure you have adequate cooling in your machine.
303
So does this actually compete with Miranda? Last time I tried Gaim, I quickly removed it as it was lacking many features I'd become accustomed to.
304
Sri, you could use the Groups feature in QTTabBar the same way you use favourites. Groups actually will allow you open one or many directories with one click.
305
Sri, right click beside a tab (not directly on the tab) and select Options. Go to Misc. and make sure to check "Show preview tooltip".

Darwin, ok, I'm going to bed now! Good night!  ;D

Another good one...not sure if it's been fgotd before, but maybe it should soon.

This is what we have all been looking for! It's about freakin' time too!

It works beautifully and fast on my machine too. Doesn't work in Open/Save dialogs or on the desktop though, but works brilliantly in explorer windows.

Newest version of QTTabBar 1.0.16 released maybe minutes ago just so happens to now have this feature. Maybe the author reads these forums?

Thanks again Curt for letting me know about this software. It just keeps getting better.  :-*
When I move to Europe, you can buy me a beer (or 10). ;)

Yeah, that avatar pretty much killed this topic!  :D

Curt, Instant ThumbView is unreliable because it does not always render the thumbnail. For instance, it can be something as simple as the file name that creates this behavior (not an unusual filename either).

Personally, I'll just use thumbnail view or when that's not possible, I have Xentient Thumbnails installed, which basically creates the file icon from the actual image.

Thanks Crono, I was unaware that the XnView team had a context menu viewer...I will check this out. I currently use FirmTools ShellExtension.

If anyone needs to have thumbnails set as the default view in Open dialogs, you can use OpenWide, Viewtify (add programs to an ini file to have separate views for each application), and Direct Folders (HORRIBLE, if not non-existent customer support and unstable behaviour...I see the guy has had time to release a new app, but not respond to my support request of many moons ago - DO NOT buy anything from this guy, support your friend Nighted, ok? ;) ).

I asked about this here ages ago and found nothing. No one here seemed to know of anything at that time either.

The author of Color Set used to have a freeware program that did this, but of course I can not find it anywhere on the net, and I spent a fair amount of time searching. Searching finds tons of hits, but mostly for web based script for performing thumbnail actions in browsers.

It's too bad there's no alternative to Instant ThumbView as it's not a reliable program. Definitely not worth the money.
312
I have so many fonts. I've collected them from websites, emule, included with skins, etc. I couldn't tell which, if any of them are supposed to be licensed, I'm sure many are. I'll stay away from this survey.

Yeah, I saw this thread and WinMerge was the first thing that came to mind. Awesome freeware.

General Software Discussion / Re: Whats the best program to learn typing?
« Last post by Nighted on April 28, 2007, 10:39 AM »
Miss Helm, my grade 7 typing teacher. I did NOT want to learn how to type. I vehemently objected. I thought it was impossible and a skill that I would never need. She somehow forced me to do it (in retrospect, she must have been one tough chick because I was a monster!). Still not sure how (although, taping over all the keys on all the typewriters was a big factor). Eventually, to my amazement, I was typing!

No computers though, just learned from a typing book.

I didn't see Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor or Typer Tutor (free) anywhere in that typing software comparison.

I find with the new version of WinRAR that my RAR files actually get better compression.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is everything you need. It's always up to date.

UltraExplorer is a mess! Nice features, butj ust a bunch of modules slapped together. So much junk code, so much wasted resources.

This would be awesome if it was all one proprietary application. I'm partial to tightly coded software. I'm not a big fan of "lego" built software.

All you need is VLC.

As if no one mentioned it. (I have a friend that uses it for this purpose)

Interesting, but I'll stick with PStart.

You could try TrueCrypt.

Found this today.

I already have a few ideas on how I can use it, especially for extracting archives (in particular, those that I don't want associated with WinRAR etc.).

ClipCache is currently 3.1.0 and has never crashed. It's clipmenus pop up immediately.

ClipX and ArsClip are 2 completely different applications and can't really be compared. ArsClip does not support graphics at all, so totally useless for me.
