A heads up, I plan on releasing an update to MiniBrowseIE sometime within a week or so, provided something doesn't change at school.

All the apps here @ DC that are made by mouser/skrommel/the main coders ARE Vista compatible 100% (including mine) :)

Also, welcome to DC!

Relationship btwn. Reviewer and Product None - just a satisfied (and occasionally annoyed) user :)

Intro:

SharePod is an application to allow you to circumvent the use of iCrap (iTunes, for those of you still attached to the demon that have yet to realize it). I utilized this, along with the temporary assistance of SongBird, to prepare my iPod and skip iTunes altogether. :)

Main GUI:

Copy completed GUI (same GUI when copy is in progress, just shows animated image instead of "Copy finished" text:

Who is this app designed for:

Anyone with an iPod/iTouch/iPhone that wants to ditch what could possibly be one of the worlds most annoying applications. Simple, smart, straightforward.

The Good:

  • Simple GUI
  • No frills options
  • Easy to check for updates
  • Well designed website
  • Fast import and export
  • Exports XML files to help those still using iTunes alongside SharePod (not sure WHY, but hey, whatever floats your boat)
  • Light on resources
  • Built in media player (!) - play RIGHT from your iPod
  • Organizes music and videos automatically, drag, drop, forget (pictures and other items untested as of this writing)
  • Tag editor and album art changer
  • Eject iPod right from the window, single click

The needs improvement section

  • The splash screen is a bit annoying
  • You can NOT edit a song/video/etc more than once per launch or you lose all your changes in a nice little crash >:(
  • The organization options (title, album, etc) don't seem to work together with multiple rules (ex: Artist and Title)

Why I think you should use this product

It is a fast, lightweight and great little alternative to iTunes. Free and well built, I see no reason why any other application should be chosen over this one for the task of iPod syncs. It does its job, does it well, and does it fast.

How does it compare to similar apps

I tried a bunch of different odd programs around Google, including SongBird (I speak highly of this media player) - SB could not sync with the iPod, BUT it did prepare it so I could sync it with SharePod. SP basically blew everything out of the water for me.

Conclusions

Definately recommend it - anyone can use and understand it, and it can save you in the case of catastrophic computer reformat. SharePod sits on your iPod (not required, but why not?) so you can pull your music back in seconds (or minutes). Worth taking a serious look at if you are like me and hate iTunes, or just want a simple way to sync and go.

Links to other reviews of this application

None that I know of.

Extras

Below is my personal Autorun.inf from my iPod - it will autostart SharePod.exe in the root folder of your iPod (directly in the iPod, NOT in any subfolder). Note that I got this as a new iPod, set it up with SongBird and then use SharePod to sync it, so you may have to follow those steps to get the full disk space and potential out of your iPod as well.

Certainly isn't going to be lighter on resources than the explorer shell, considering it's written in dotNET.

Whats wrong with .NET? >_<
307
Wondering: Could there be an implemented function in the search box or something to search for a user on the map? Maybe even a search box on the map page itself? It would make finding people much easier (I know you can go to their profile, but this way it kind of integrates a bit). Just a thought.

screenshots anyone?  ;D

SS are available on the website, specifically the forum - any posting of screenshots anywhere BEFORE public alpha/beta/whatever comes after that (charlie? Too much COD4? My MP5 has no more ammo? :-[) is prohibited and bla bla bla...

Basically: Go to forum, see pix!

Hmm... kind of strange and logical at the same time I guess. Just kind of unusual to override a Windows hotkey, I suppose.

Last second thought: You can also double click the top left of FARR (where the icon would be) to close it as well. That might work better if your hand is on the mouse and it is faster... depends on the situation I guess. Figured I would point out that it works even with the skinning system, though.

o_O I didn't know about that option :P

I need to fix UploadForever and DownloadForever sometime soon (spring break, maybe) and get them up here - I haven't forgotten!

Still, TweakUI won't help here - its a Vista box that I need to do this on. Grr. Microsoft makes such an awesome program, then doesn't update it. Kill off the good and update the bad. Gah. :(

Developer's Corner / Re: Seeking Programming Language To Learn
« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 08, 2009, 01:06 AM »
I started making little scripts in AutoHotkey and worked my way up to complex AHK programs and now do stuff in Visual Basic .NET, going for C# (did Java in school... ugh... no comment) - AHK is a great starting language IMO, and the help files and online documentation are just awesome. You can do a ton of things easily in AHK that are difficult in other languages, too (sending keystrokes to apps/control of the computer, plus the logical syntax allows for simple ways of doing complex things). Only downside is the way the AHK script files are converted to EXEs sometimes triggers virus false alarms :-\ ... stupid AV companies.

Start small, work your way up. Once you have a basis, you can always fall back. Keep going, and once you get into it, it is so enjoyable... :)

« Last post by wreckedcarzz on January 08, 2009, 12:51 AM »
Just wanted to say that I read this topic a while back, and for the last year or so I've been using TeraCopy almost exclusively (except in situations where launching an external file copy app would take up more time than would be gained by it, and that means... Explorer). I finally got the portable version for my new 16GB flash drive (couldn't fit it on my tiny 1GB), and am using it everywhere. Gotta love it. :)

Can I be a pain and ask that you upload the ZIP to DC (via way of attachment)? It is taking me about 45 seconds to load this webpage, and it would be much more convenient to just be able to get it instantly here :)

Also, in your version history:
28/12/21 Release V1.1
I believe that 28 should be an 08?

FYI if anyone wants to download the video (to show on your PSP, phone, iPod, whatever), you can get it here (I had to decode the embed code to get to it):
