you are right, i see what you mean; i will fix it in the update planned for this month, along with adding some nice features.

i must take the blame for not putting this up earlier; i've been a bit overworked and the truth is SuperboyAC sent this to me a long time ago.

I'm going to try to make my way through the backlog this month and get up another couple of reviews that have been waiting in the wings, some of which require more editing than others..  What we really need is a brave soul to take over Review Editing/Formatting duties, and then we'd have the Review problems half-way licked..

Of course i'll just say again, the other main way we can show the reviewers how much we appreciate their work is to send them a few credits (at the top left of each review is a link to donate to the reviewer).

i added a %CUSTOMDATE% variable in the lastest version just for you, so you can very specifically customize exactly how you want the date string displayed.

Note Taking Software / SuperboyAC's Notetaking Software Roundup #1
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2006, 02:49 AM »
A preview version of SuperboyAC's new review, The Notetaking Software Roundup #1, is now online here:

NOTE: It is only currently readable by donating members of the website; it will be made public in about a week after it has been edited based on feedback here.

Congratulations to SuperboyAC on what is an impossibly difficult subject to review, as we have discussed on the massive Note taking Brainstorm Thread here (longest thread on the forum):

Please show your support by sending SuperboyAC some credits, and by all means post your dissenting reviews on his conclusions.

The field of note taking software is huge, and constantly changing. Different people have vastly different preferences of one tool over another. Because of this we have decided *not* to give out awards in this category as we normally do in our shootout reviews.

In recognition of the difficulty and subjectivity of judging note taking programs, we have decided to forgoe our normal comprehensive shootout comparison, and instaead invite our reviewers to express their own personal summaries of the software they have tested. This Notetaking Roundup represents the first of these summaries.

you might getter better response if you change topic of your thread to:
"I need someone to help translate something from french to english",
as it sounds like you are offering your services, not requesting help :)

Mobysaurus / Re: Mobysaurus Thesaurus v1.0 Released
« Last post by mouser on September 04, 2006, 09:50 PM »
Great suggestions cemole -
I think we all need to make an effort to figure out ways to take Mobysaurus to the next level of polish and features.  I know Anderson is very interested in making it as good as it can be, and the thing he probably needs most of all now are suggestions and testers.

Retain history is important to me too, as would be recognizing words on the clipboard when resumed from tray.  WordWeb is a great program to study in terms of a nice efficient interface.

I'd love to see a dictionary module added.

Find And Run Robot / Re: quickdoclauncher.exe
« Last post by mouser on September 04, 2006, 09:26 PM »
some documents, like ms office documents, have a strange effect on the program that tries to launch them, and essentially lock up the process for a few seconds even if executes with "shellexecute", so essentially when farr finds a program that it thinks could do this to it, it instead launches quickdocklauncher.exe with commandline parameters that instruct it what document to launch, so that farr can resume working right away.

bottom line, not very useful to you outside of farr use.

very interesting reading.. i do however feel compelled to point out that my experience in life is that people are extremely smart/genius in one area are rarely so gifted in general knowledge and common sense.  just because someone is a brilliant physicist doesn't mean he's going to be a brilliant psychoanalyst, etc.

New version (1.04.01) is uploaded, mostly with minor enhancements - but one bug was fixed that makes this a highly recommended update: hard carriage returns were being inserted into edited text blocks at wrap locations, which could result in unwanted forced CRs in final output.

Startup options, to start the program with a named Tree (wizard). Like TheFormLetterMachine.exe -t "MS Word Issue"

already supported, see help file for commandline parameters.

General Software Discussion / Guitar Hero Clones for Your PC
« Last post by mouser on September 04, 2006, 02:50 PM »
Kids are loving this game called Guitar Hero, where you play along with famous songs.
Only problem for us PC folks is that it's only available for Game Consoles (PS2,etc.)

Thankfully, if you're interested in such things, there are some free clones for the PC (Windows, linux, mac):

DonationCoder CafePress Item of Choice -> includes tshirts.
(actually we will probably continue to give out a mug and tshirt every month).

as for selling tshirts, this has come up before.  the reason we don't do it currently is that we live off of very small donations here and every dollar counts, and the idea of someone paying $20 for a tshirt and us receiving $3 of that while tshirt company makes $17 is just too much for me to bear..  so instead i prefer we just give them away occasionally and have them be something special.  I was thinking we might also do like pbs and give them away to big donors as an exta incentive or something..

great! been hoping for some more suggestions for the form letter machine.
some good suggestions here, many similar to some stuff i've been thinking about.. i'll try to work on some of these.

I have to say i am loving my index card system in place of the old todo lists i used to write.
The old full page ToDo lists get messy and half completed and misplaced and just hard to keep track of.
The index cards are great: one per item, and when i complete one i can check it off and file it away.
And having a card for each item means i can shuffle them around, arrange them as a i please, and have plenty of room to write on each one.  and there is something pleasing tactiley from a 3x5" card.

We want to keep this interactive, so everyone who is participating please do feel free to post even if it's just to say "yep i've organized a workspace!" and don't feel shy about it being your first post ever on our forum.  This is as good a time as any

Also, the plan we have for this project is not set in stone (though we will be posting a more elaborate roadmap soon), so please do chime in with particular areas or issues or suggestions for stuff you think would be useful to address in the upcoming months.

Currently we plan on looking at several different systems (GTD, GED, etc.), as well as different software programs, our own upcoming fun productivity toy utility, and then brainstorming our own hybrid system as a group effort here.

And if anyone knows any other "systems" they think are interesting, please post them so we can look into it.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Setting a short delay for pasting into an active window?
« Last post by mouser on September 03, 2006, 09:26 PM »
i think this would actually be a good general solution - though i hope to find a better more reliable solution that will work without having to configure a delay.  however i will add an option to specify a delay in the next few days.

What's particularly confusing in that list is, is that some of the entries make sense if we are talking about historical significance (Mosaic), but then many of the other entries don't make sense.

Maybe I'm just getting a bit jaded with all the "Top 10" lists out there.
exactly. you took the words out of my mouth.

eh  :-\
29975

most of the "getting organized" stuff i've seen doesn't make much use of a calendar except as a way of marking any HARD DEADLINES you might have, so in that case i'm guessing that you want a big overview (12 pages one for each month?) rather than a book with a page for each day that you have to search through..  of course there are other uses for a dayplanner type thing if you have lots of meetings, etc..
