Developer's Corner / Thesis on Balance (Flow) In Game Design
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 11:30 PM »
Very useful reading for game designers and people interested in the theory of fun.

The remainder of this thesis is organized into four chapters.

In Foundation – We will further explore Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s Flow theory, introduce the concept of DDA (Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment), and check out existing research and methodologies about DDA

In Design Flow in Games – We are going to discuss the in-depth methodology about implementing Flow and player-oriented DDA inside video game.

In Implement Flow in Games – Two games created specifically for testing player-oriented DDA and their test results are presented.

In Conclusion – We would summarize the methodology, review the next research step, and look at possible application beyond video games.

Living Room / Jatalla, Human Powered Alternative Search Engine
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 11:24 PM »
Jatalla: Interesting concept.

Why is Jatalla so different from other search engines?

Conventional search engines rely upon computers to rank the relevance of web pages to search terms. Several different ranking methodologies are used: counting the number of links to a given web page or counting the number of occurrences of a particular term in a page, for example.

By contrast, Jatalla relies only upon relevance rankings performed personally by actual human beings. You and people like you are literally the ranking mechanism used by Jatalla.

When you perform a search on Jatalla.com, you are interviewing the entire world of Web users, and only those opinions matching your query — character-for-character — are counted in generating search results.

If you believe (as do we!) that humans are still smarter than computers, you have come to the right place.

a user will be able to configure quick email profiles so that you can very easily and clearly send a screenshot to a friend who is in your configured lst.

You can even send someone the profile to load into SnagIt
clever.

like i said i will be adding email destination stuff to sc, but i still think there is an advantage to a small lightweight util you could send someone preconfigured with your email which was totally mistakeproof.

i think this probably exists in some form, and i think it's a very good idea.

even though screenshot captor is a bit of overkill for this request, i do plan on adding something like this to screenshot captor to make it much easier to do repeat emails of screenshots to people.

when i do add this, you've convinced me i should think of making a standalone tray based tool to do exactly what you say, allowing for someone to pre-configure their email address for a mini little program that does what you say.

looking forward to hearing what other programs exist for this, i know there are some.

Developer's Corner / Re: Jeff Atwood Blog: Has Joel Spolsky Jumped the Shark?
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 07:46 PM »
It will be interesting to read how this continues; I suspect Joel knew quite well that his negative comments about Ruby would garner some real attention and require some follow up.

I'm also not sure I agree with all of Atwood's points.. I think one could make an argument on behalf of Joel that goes something like this:  Rather than choose to write the product in a fixed language that would hold us captive to that platform, we built a homebrew language well suited to the product so that we could change the target output when that becomes more advantageous.  I agree with Jeff that this is usually a very bad decision, but there are long-term projects where it might make sense.  It's also not clear to me how windows-centric Joel's product is; if the answer is "very" then it seems to be that the argument against using Ruby makes more sense.

Developer's Corner / Jeff Atwood Blog: Has Joel Spolsky Jumped the Shark?
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 07:34 PM »
Jeff Atwood's blog today demands return of the old Joel Spolsky:

Has Joel Spolsky Jumped the Shark?
..
two weeks ago we found out that Joel's company wrote their flagship product, FogBugz, in a proprietary language they created themselves.
...
You couldn't possibly have heard it, but that was the sound of fifty thousand programmers' heads simultaneously exploding. Writing your own language is absolutely beyond the pale. It's a toxic decision that is so completely at odds with Joel's previous excellent and sane advice on software development that people literally thought he was joking. He had to write an entire follow-up post to explain that, no, he wasn't kidding.
...
I reject this new, highly illogical Joel Spolsky. I demand the immediate return of the sage, sane, wise Joel Spolsky of years past. But maybe it's like wishing for a long-running television show to return to its previous glories.

Personally I have always found Joel Spolsky alternatively insightful and a unbearable self-promoter.

Gothic is working actively on Games Division stuff, but it's going to be a while before it goes live - it's a very big project at the heart of it.  It's definitely something special but don't expect anything until well into 2007.

General Software Discussion / BetaMarker: A Digg-like site for software
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 03:41 PM »
I suspect that the gaming/manipulation that will occur here by companies in order to artificially promote their programs to the top will be unprecedented if this site ever becomes popular, but it's still an interesting idea.

But unlike other software sites where the content is created and regulated by administrators, Beta Marker is governed as a pure democracy. The people, software enthusiasts around the world - you, rule this domain.

Free press.Beta marker members can submit any software they like to the site. The software may be in alpha, beta or final development stages. It may have a large software company behind it or a one-geek team.

Majority Rule. All software is voted on by other Beta Marker members. If the software rocks, it will be voted for by many members and be promoted to the home page where it will be shared with all Beta Marker members. If it sucks, members will vote against it and it will be removed.

« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 12:29 PM »
Don't forget that there are some good paint/image manipulation programs out there, and Screenshot Captor is designed to work well with them! Take the time to configure Paint.net or Paintshop Pro, or Photoshop, etc. as the graphic editor or as a TOOL in screenshot captor and you can very easily edit images with your graphics editor and have SC automatically detect changes and load them back in without losing any objects (text, arrows).

Each time you click the Stumble button on SU it serves you up a page it think you will like based on what it has learned about your preferences.

BUT occasionally it serves you up an advertising-paid sponsored page.  There is supposed to be a subtle indication of such pages but i never spot it.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / WEEK 3 Will Focus on Mark Forster's Ideas
« Last post by mouser on September 12, 2006, 11:16 AM »
Just a heads up - next week we will be focusing on Mark Forster's Ideas, so hurry up and learn GTD so you are ready to absorb Forster's ideas next.

Your deadline for completion of learning GTD is Sep 14.
29774
well said arjendk!

remember, the goal with this 3 month experiment is not to get you to use GTD or any specific pre-existing system, it's to help you FIND or CREATE a system that works for you.

I am 100% convinced that having SOME kind of specific "system" for yourself is a good thing - but what that system looks like is up to you completely.  Maybe you will find an existing one that is perfect for you, or maybe you will have to invent a totally new system.  But commit yourself to figuring out some kind of system of rules and techniques to help you stay organized.

Btw:
Mark Forster, who we will start looking at next week, makes a big deal about not liking TODO lists, and instead advocates WILL DO lists for each day.  The idea is to make lists that are completely achievable for each day, and contain only what you can accomplish for that day, and not let lists get bigger after you make one, so that you really can finish it each day.
