General Software Discussion / Firefox navigation ... (update: problem solved)
« Last post by Curt on August 06, 2011, 10:10 AM »
Problem has now been solved
-----------------

Once more I have been given a weird problem. This time it is with Firefox only. And even more weird: it is no matter what Firefox version I am using; 3, 4, or 5, Safe Mode/All AddOns Disabled, or not!

The navigation hotkeys have gone missing from my keyboard when I use Firefox. PgUp/PgDn and Arrow up/down/right/left are all out of order; they do nothing, no "fast scrolling" (or what you call it). But it is only when dealing with Firefox; with every other program and in every other situation the keyboard is working normal as it is supposed to.

It has taken me some days to test all combinations I could think of, (including removal of the latest new programs and updates), except for the total removal of Firefox, and I still don't have any idea what have gone wrong. Can "you" think of a reason and/or a solution, please?

InDesign is the successor isn't it?

-yes

Current PageMaker customers can upgrade to the Adobe InDesign® CS5 PageMaker Upgrade at a special price.
-Adobe

I learned to love PageMaker between 1993 and 1995.

Also, Jasc PaintShop from back then. The marker/selector 17 years ago makes nearly all of today's photo editors look as if progress has been paused or even reversed.

Not knowing who NTI is, I had a look on their Company Profile:

NTI released the world's first CD Copy software in December of 1995. NTI's full line of software products have been recognized by: PC Magazine, EMedia, Smart Computing, PC World, Five Star Review, and ZDNET.com. PC Magazine's famed columnist John C. Dvorak commented on NTI CD-Maker: "This software is close to perfection!"

So I guess they are okay.

The proper way to answer certain kind of questions:

Dear Miriam
The other day I set off for work, leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual.
I hadn't gone a hundred yards down the road when my engine conked out and the car juddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help.
When I got home I found him in the bedroom. I couldn't believe my eyes. He was parading in front of the wardrobe mirror dressed in my underwear and high heel shoes, and he was wearing my make up.

I am 32, my husband is 34 and we have been married for 12 years. When I confronted him, he tried to make out that he had dressed up in my lingerie because he couldn't find any of his own underwear.
But when I asked him about the make up, he broke down and admitted that he has been wearing my clothes for six months.
I told him it had to stop, or I would leave him.

He was made redundant from his job six months ago and he says he has been feeling increasingly depressed and worthless. I love him much, but ever since I gave him the ultimatum, he has become increasigly distant, and I don't feel I can get through to him any more. Please can you help
Mrs B., Essex
-Letter To Miriam's Advice Lines

and the wonderful, proper answer:

Dear Mrs. B.
A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults in the engine.
Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the jubilee clips holding the vacuum pipes onto the inlet manifold.
If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburettor float chamber.

Anybody here have direct experience with using this product.

I too have the Security Suite and a lifetime license. I won't tell what happened long ago, because now is what counts, and today it is working flawlessly. I cannot understand how 40Hz could read mwb1100's post as a warning against Outpost; mwb1100 clearly paints a picture of programs out of date. The present Outpost version is 7.5.1; from reading mwb1100 post, I will bet his version is a lot older.

-okay, I am a bit arrogant, then ;-)

But of course I should have said "less important (compared to social intelligence)", rather than just "more unimportant".
With this said, I must clarify that the combination of a high academic intelligence  and a high social intelligence  is admirable.

I honestly expected that my post would be ignored, so I want to express my gratitude to the answers. An extra Thank You to J-Mac for the spot-on story about Asimov's mechanic. Also, I agree with kyrathaba about wisdom. Unfortunately the normal Anglo explanation on wisdom is inaccurate, because they forget to differ between knowing what is right,  and also doing what is right. I explain wisdom as both knowing and doing what is right. Just knowing it  without doing it, is not wisdom. The reverse situation is probably called virtue.

On a related side-note about intelligence it can be said that, real intelligence begins with realizing how not-intelligent one is.

Anyway, Thank You for the answers.

It's official: IE users are dumb as a bag of hammers • The Register

It's official: IE users are dumb as a bag of hammers - DonationCoder.com

I was reading the test, and was thinking this is a classic example of poor thinking. I don't question the test result, but the criteria for "intelligence". We need as humans to remind each others that intelligence is not just academic intelligence (if you can solve some mathematical or advanced logical questions), but that intelligence is so much more.

Academic intelligence was all the test was able to refer to. The users of Internet Explorer may actually be the group with the higher intelligence, if it was about genuine intelligence, because the users of Opera (etcetera) are more likely to be without connection to Real Life = non-academically unintelligent.

Intelligence is first and foremost if you at all time know how to help the one next to you. "Love thy neighbor/neighbour", as the Bible puts it. Intelligence is also if you can make piece, raise a family, feed the hungry, make fair decisions, strengthen the weak, protect the vulnerable, etcetera, etcetera. All this is genuine intelligence, because it is the form for intelligence that is necessary for life! Lack of this kind of intelligence will literally lead to death, and that is by itself a fatal lack of intelligence.

The guy who sits behind his desk all time, browsing the Net, loosing his head to unimportant pseudo matters and virtual situations, is really not intelligent, no matter what browser he is using  and no matter how high his academic intelligence may be. In Real Life he is unintelligent (And I should know...). His IQ may be 200, but he is a fool. Do we call fools  clever people?

There are several forms of intelligence. I don't care to go into how many forms or what they are, but I do want to stop the academics from lying! Academics are far too often trying to make (themselves and) non-academics think that academic intelligence is the only intelligence that matters, that academic intelligence must be superior. Well, it isn't, it is inferior!

It is time to dismiss the use of the phrase intelligence, without referring to what kind of intelligence is in mention. Academic intelligence is actually one of the minor and more unimportant intelligences in Real Life!

"You have 121 updates waiting for you" !!!

However, what makes Orbit Downloader really good as a media catcher, is "Grap Pro", and this works only with Internet Explorer, not "ANY browser".

and to enable "show updates"

To uninstall Internet Explorer

The following instructions apply to both Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Click the Start button Picture of the Start button, type Programs and Features in the search box, and then click View installed updates in the left pane.

Under Uninstall an update, scroll down to the Microsoft Windows section.

Right-click Windows Internet Explorer 9, click Uninstall, and then, when prompted, click Yes.

    Click one of the following:

Restart now (to finish the process of uninstalling Internet Explorer 9, and restore the previous version of Internet Explorer).

Restart later (to wait until you shut down or restart your computer).

General Software Discussion / HowTo remove IE9 ???
« Last post by Curt on July 31, 2011, 10:58 AM »
My girlfriend is having some troubles with Internet Explorer 9's toolbars. She can't understand what the browser is telling her, because she has the English version, so now she wants me to replace it with the Danish version. Piece of a cake, I said. Ha! Little did I know.

I won't make this a post about the offence it is not to be able to remove Internet Explorer. But really...., what were they thinking? And when IE first was launched, the link did not warn and say "This version is not in your language, and you may have keep it until version 10", but just said it was an important improvement.

The core of the problem is that the Danish version is "older" than the English version, and always will be, so it is impossible to install on top of the English one. So, what do I do to help the helpless lady? I mean, regarding replacing the English Internet Explorer 9 with a Danish version?

Please?  :tellme:

Babylon 9 has long at last been updated. 6 months it took for this new version to be launched. They built inn an OCR scanner, but... unfortunately it didn't change anything. I am not going to use Babylon, (ever?), because it still doesn't support Firefox 4. So much for a lifetime license. Something is seriously wrong inside that company.

Mine does this quite often, and it is disappointing. I have not been able to spot any pattern in when it does or doesn't.

Does anyone have details on the "Online Backup" offered as part of BitDefender Total Security 2011?
There's a FAQ that I *think* addresses this question:  http://www.bitdefender.com/site/KnowledgeBase/article/750/How-to-activate-Online-Back-up.html
But it's a bloody video!

2GB  = $20 extra per year, = DEFAULT,
5GB  = $29.14,
10GB = $40.80,
15GB = $58.30 extra per year

This is really much too expensive, I think.

Instinctively I like Steven's suggestion better: Buy Bitdefender now, for $9.95, and maybe swift to Outpost Security Suite, for nothing! But this offer is restricted to N-America. You ("they") have two days from now to do so:

Not happy with your current Internet security suite?
Get a free Competitive Upgrade to Outpost Security Suite!

BETWEEN NOW AND AUGUST 31ST 2011, YOU CAN GET A FREE COMPETITIVE UPGRADE TO OUTPOST SECURITY SUITE PRO 7.5 PERFORMANCE EDITION IF YOU LIVE IN THE US OR CANADA AND USE A PAID INTERNET SECURITY SUITE FROM ONE OF THE VENDORS LISTED BELOW:

Avast    Avira    AVG    BullGuard    BitDefender    CA
Eset    F-Secure    GData    Kaspersky    Lavasoft    McAfee
Panda    PC Tools    Norton (Symantec)    Trend Micro    WebRoot    ZoneAlarm

For all participants Outpost Security Suite Pro will be provided free of charge for one or two years depending on the active competitive license. If the current license is valid for more than 3 months but less than 12 months, it will be Outpost Security Suite Pro one-year license, if more than 12 months are left, then participant will get Outpost Security Suite Pro two-year license. The Outpost license will be valid for up to 3 or 5 PCs for personal and/or family use, depending on the competing license.
