General Software Discussion / Re: Need some (security/virus-related) advice.
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2017, 10:28 AM »
If I had to guess, I'd say the odds are good that he paid $100 to a company that used teamviewer to remote connect in and (at least tried) to fix his computer, and that everything is fine and nothing was taken, and that you should simply ensure that teamviewer password is changed or teamviewer uninstalled, etc. and backup everything in a safe place as always, and keep a careful eye on bank and credit cards for the next 6-12 months.

That's not to say that there isn't a risk that everything else was taken -- just a reminder that most of the time things aren't as bad as we fear.

Living Room / Just tried using a 4k monitor in my setup, did not like it
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2017, 09:44 AM »
When it comes to a monitor, higher resolution is better, right?

Not for me.  Tried using a 27 inch 4k monitor (3840x2160) for my main monitor today, and was very disapointed.
This was replacing a 27 inch monitor running at 2560x1440 that I was very happy with at 2560x1440 -- lots of real estate on the screen, but text large enough that I could read it.

At 3840x2160, the normal text size in windows is too small to read.  So the solution would require changing desktop scaling in windows -- which would be ok except in a multimonitor setup that can cause issues when you have one monitor with higher scaling than another.

The high resolution also seemed to strain the abilities of full screen apps.
And the brightness of the new ($500) monitor left much to be desired; far inferior to my 2560x1440 one.

And lastly, trying to set the resolution of this 4k monitor back down to my previous 2560x1440 resulted in a very blurry display, so that isn't an option.

I'm returning it -- just thought I'd post a word of caution to anyone considering the move to a 4k monitor -- unless you have a really serious reason to need 4k, and you've sat down in front of one to confirm you like what you see, I would reconsider whether you really want one.

If you only have a single monitor, or plan to run multiple monitors ALL at 4k, and have the spare horsepower, and have the money to get very high quality 4k bright monitors, then 4k may still be for you.

Living Room / Re: How can I blank out my laptop camera?
« Last post by mouser on December 10, 2017, 11:10 AM »
Probably the best thing you can do is to not give up.  Keep doing the video interviews and try your best not to worry about how you look.  Even if you keep getting rejecting you will gain practice and bravery and you will eventually persevere and find one that accepts you.  It is better to face your fears than to start a new job by creating some technical excuse.

It is far more likely that they will view your failure to get your video working as much more damaging than whatever you look like.

Better to just show them who you are and show them you are confident enough to not let that stop you.

If you are seeing a nag it means the key did not get applied.  You can verify that by bringing up the About box in the program which will show you the information from the license key.

I'm afraid the inversion effect is hardcoded into the theme control -- you could try changing the theme in the root options of LBC and see if any of the other themes look better.

It does seem like its all in the camera shake.. Yeah I don't hear anything but I kind of get a funny vibration-like feeling.
Not so surprising -- the brain integrates all sorts of information in order to interpret incoming sensory information and vision is our dominant sense.

For those testing, there is a new beta test version of the complete site (cms and forum) uploaded with same htaccess password, on a new server:

I'm getting some practice migrating the site to a new server, which will help ensure that I have the procedure down and ensure that it's easy for us to move from one home to another, and that all of our data is easy to backup and restore.

Let me know if you spot anything not working.

Are you using the portable version of screenshot captor or the installer version?
You say the error happens on computer startup.  If you exit Screenshot Captor and restart it manually, do you not get the error? Or does it happen whenever you start screenshot captor?

The first thing you might try is to exit SC and delete the ScreenshotCaptor.ini file to reset any of your screenshot captor options and settings, and see if that fixes it.

If you didn't install SC normally (for example if you copied it over from another machine), you might try uninstalling or deleting it and reinstalling it.

Another thing to try is to use the portable version and see if that has the same problem -- if not then we know it has something to do with where/how it was installed.

The dot isn't meant to play audio over its own speaker; the other editions of the Echo/Tap are.
I have one of their previous generation versions that has a real speaker and uses a battery and its sound quality is very good.  I use it purely to get news updates and play music while cooking.

Make sure you have the latest version of FARR -- it should display well on windows when you have increased the windows font size settings.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Fixes Size Captor - How to with Minimum Key presses
« Last post by mouser on December 01, 2017, 10:49 PM »
Unfortunately that process does not save to clipboard, based on the settings mouser suggested for fixed size capture - a dialogue box opens and I need to make choices - eg Save (1) it then copies to clipboard.
Is there an easier way to force these screenshots to copy to clipboard and have no dialogue box or no further options to select eg (1 to 4)?

I gave you the steps!

  • Go to Interface Options and tell SC to "After Capture Show: Stay Minimized".
  • Go to Post-Capture Options and choose "Copy to clipboard:" and make your choice.
