Living Room / Blog Article - Social Networking: Time For A Silver Bullet
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 01:16 PM »
There's a reason that Read/WriteWeb is our site-of-the-month for October.  Here comes another nice roundup of social networking sites:

MySpace is booming in popularity; Facebook is gracing the headlines again; Bebo is growing incredibly; Tribe relaunched; Cyworld, Hive7 and SecondLife are nothing short of a phenomenon; LinkedIn is becoming 'People Search'; ITToolbox relaunched with a host of social networking features; Friendster is now refueling itself to enter the market again.

Put simply, social networking is hot and there is plenty of money and action in the SNS space to prove it.
...
There are hundreds of emergent social networks, but I've shortlisted a few that are worth keeping an eye on (apart from the obvious ones, like MySpace and Facebook):

Living Room / Starship Eleven - A Modern Lunar Lander - Flash Game of the Day
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 12:44 PM »
When i was just learning to program, one of the first games i would write on a computer (ibm pc, trs-80, radio shack color computer) was a lunar lander clone - such a fun program to write.

Well here's a suped-up flash version that's very well done with lots of bonus stuff, Starship Eleven:

We've mentioned these tools before,
vibe streamer: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3981.0
subsonic: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5193.0

I think it's about time someone did a review of these tools!

Here's a new one, Jinzora:

Jinzora enables you to stream your digital music and videos to any internet connected computer using a web browser.

Streaming your media with Jinzora gives you quick and easy access to your online music collection from any internet connected computer. Have a large CD or mp3 collection? Use Jinzora to organize and then access your collection from anywhere. Want to play your digital music on your home stereo? Connect your pc to your home stereo and use the Jukebox features of Jinzora to play your music. Play in a band? Use Jinzora to share your music with the world.

Also might be worth a look, more of a jukebox tool but also with some web features and getting TONS of attention lately, Songbird:

Find And Run Robot / Re: Retain keywords after losing focus
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 09:39 AM »
just to clarify - what you want is for the break key to not reset the search when used to bring focus back to the window when already on the screen.  in other words you want the break key to behave as if you had just click on the farr window titlebar in this case right?

just a word in support of outpost - v4 actually looks good to me in terms of features; i played with it on a vmware and i will be upgrading once it is stable, so i really do still like it.  but agnitum seems to take a long time to make their new releases stable so i'm waiting until a few rounds of bug fixing before upgrading.

Mouser, how about having a separate members area for folks that donate. This could have the special discounts you offer for programs like my Surfulater, instead of these being available to all members. The bottom line is to deliver greater benefits to folks that donate.

as app says, that's how we do it now :)
the discount section:
https://www.donation...index.php?board=85.0

can only be viewed by supporting/honorary members.

Living Room / Re: Buying New PC. Suggestions?
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 02:23 AM »
i know you are getting contradictory advice here but i would not worry about a dual processor, and not worry about upgrading, and not worry about graphics card being agp or pci-e.

i think you really have to question the idea that you will be upgrading these things- probably you wont.

as for winxp home to pro, ok your explanation makes more sense.  it's probably not such a hassle to upgrade.

DShutdown looks cool, and he has a few more useful programs, all donationware, so send him a donation if you like the software!

How can you resist this kind of call for a donation:

All my programs are completely free, and will always remain free. If you are satisfied with them and want to assist my cat and i, to improve or motivate the development of other quality programs, any donation small or large, will be welcome (and gratefully appreciated!)

i've added autodialogs to the review: https://www.donation...ive/DialogExtenders/
summary: i would recommend the others above Auto Dialogs.

actually i maintain that review, and you are quite right that autodialogs should be added to it.
looks like i must have overlooked it originally..

doesnt work on my secondary monitor, so dual monitor people should test it out first before buying, but otherwise it looks like a reasonable dialog box extender.

remember that all of skrommel's software come in source code versions (compilable easily with autohotkey), so when in doubt, compile it! :)

but thanks for the report, these false virus reports are always super annoying.

General Software Discussion / Screensaver Maker Recommendations?
« Last post by mouser on October 03, 2006, 05:30 PM »
I'd like to ask for some recommendations for programs that can be used to make screensavers from your images..
(I want to make some screensavers from nudone's cody pics)

Requirements:
  • It doesnt have to be free, but it cant be over $30 or so.
  • It must support multiple monitors
  • It must be capable of building a nice installer that can be shared with others.

Suggestions?

a bug that's not my fault - that's what i love to hear.  ;)

interesting blog critisizing the approach:
http://www.feedblog....netflix_ranking.html

If you assume they can get 4x compression out of this dataset you're still looking at 50G which you'll probably have to query at runtime. This probably means a memory based cluster and to do that you'll need at least $15-20k at a minimum to get started.

What Netflix should do is allow teams to pitch them their proposals and fund their research with a winning prize of $1M.

i've become totally disgusted with digg..
there is still great content there but i just cannot get past how much of what we are seeing is the result of a corrupted system that rewards people who game the system behind the scene.

Living Room / The Women Of Star Trek - Feminists!
« Last post by mouser on October 03, 2006, 02:33 PM »
This is brilliant, and great commentary on the strong role of women in star trek.

This page was born because of my righteous anger at Trek "fans" who repeatedly talk about "Playboy Kirk" or the Star Trek "Babes" in an appallingly sexist way. Here's proof that Kirk was NOT a playboy and Star Trek was NOT a sexist show. It was an anti-sexist show: one of the first, and one of the all-time best.
