most experts seem to pass through a stage where they think they know everything, and then only as they keep learning to they realize how much they don't yet know.

another way to say it is that an expert knows what they don't know.

unfortunately i've notices that when you get to that stage it can be almost debilitating.  it's easier to write a paper on something when you think you know it all.  once you get to the stage where you can see all these gaps in what you know it's hard to write a sentence without feeling the need to add 10 footnotes qualifying it.  :(

Living Room / Re: Buying New PC. Suggestions?
« Last post by mouser on October 07, 2006, 12:48 AM »
just to clarify, i don't know anything about dell, and am not really advising buying from them or not.
i was basically advocating making a decision up front, do you want to buy different parts from different places and worry about compatibility issues and put together a custom pc by yourself (which some people love doing), and prepare yourself for the real risk of encountering issues you have to deal with, OR
do you want a nice easy web page where you can configure a system which you know will be designed with components that work reasonably well together, and have a single company to deal with if something is wrong.

so basically i just think that's the very first question to answer, and then you can move on from there.  if you identify yourself as the type that wants a single company with configurable system wizards, then you probably don't need to be worrying about power supply sizes, etc.

General Software Discussion / Re: Screensaver Maker Recommendations?
« Last post by mouser on October 06, 2006, 10:07 PM »
im just interested in making a screensaver using the big images nudone made for us.
so just images, no music or animation.
i want a solution that will build a nice installer for me so i dont have to manually make one.
multimonitor support is required because i want to use it too and i have multimonitor.

as for what i want it to do on 2nd monitor in terms of stretch, blank, etc - the answer is i want it to present the user with options in terms of speed, transitions, and multimonitor choices.  this is partly why im asking for recommendations - i'm interested in that screensaver maker has the best options for this kind of stuff.

« Last post by mouser on October 06, 2006, 03:56 PM »
i used to have cookie blocker till i realized it was just an annoyance.
i think if you are worried about tracking the most reasonable solution is to have something that accepts all cookies, but then deletes most when you exit/start browser.  blocking cookies by default is a good recipe for not being able to navigate modern websites.

Developer's Corner / F*cks per source package and license
« Last post by mouser on October 05, 2006, 09:21 PM »
I've seen similar counts based on language - this one graphs license type too :)

...
Here, we can see that, while the number of fucks never even gets to 1% of the results, in the highest one, PHP, 0.5% of all the packages found by Google code contain the word fuck, or any of its derivatives, such as fucker, etc. Furthermore, after PHP, which is the language with most occurences of fuck, almost doubling the other two which compete for the second place, those being C and Perl, something not unexpected. The lowest ones, which is no surprise, are C# and Python, Python probably being the cleanest programming language of the ones sorted here.
...
It can be clearly seen that LGPL makes people swear, while GPL and BSD still do, but in a reduced manner.
