Donationcoder is a community that has truely inspired me. I now enjoy doing various projects for the site, to range from screencasts to the upcoming interviews for the podcasts, to whatever I can think of next. Donationcoder has shown me how hard developers work on applications and has given much more motivation not just to donate to freeware projects I like, but to support commercial applications by purchasing a license when I find a tool useful.

Well, what OS was this on? This sounds like PRE-IE6SP2 since now IE prompts you before an activex control is installed. I have not heard of anyone having an activex control (spyware loading one) being installed without the user being prompted.

I honestly dont forsee microsoft leaving IE out to dry anymore. They learned their lesson with IE6 when firefox came around. I bet we will see more and more updates to IE now that they have it back in their radar.

I can honestly say I have not been hit by any exploit in IE. I would like someone who has been hit to show me the vulnerability listing (on securnia, or whatever site) that they were hit by. So far, the only windows exploit I have been hit by was the blaster worm (RPC). You dont need to disable javascript or manage secure zones. All you have to do is practice safe browsing habits. The only time I've even had spyware ATTEMPT to install itself on my pc was when I visited a crack site (yes, I do visit them) and that never got anywhere because of several tools I have running.

I think security is overrated. I think that if we spent more of the time that we do developing "secure" applications on training and educating the end user, that we would get FAR MORE accomplished. Yes, there are unpatched security holes in IE, but I would like to see the numbers of the people actually hit by any of these holes.

Well, apple might not be as prone to virii or malware as windows is due to its lack of market share, BUT, I have yet to see a PC that explodes when its NOT PLUGGED IN. Way to go apple! Way to exceed the PC standard by EXPLODING as opposed to just running!

Well, initially, I think any author that starts a forum will respond. Once a good knowledge base is started up, then it will be less required except for unhandled issues. Thats the way I've seen most forums work, and I think its a good approach once a good KB is built up.

Well, if it had been programmed decently, it wouldn't have (as many) holes. Yes, it's obviously the most targetted forum because it's the most widespread, but considering the amount of holes and the severity of them, I wouldn't want to run phpBB. Ever.

Programmed decently? Programming, regardless of who is doing it and how well you think it is done, has one major flaw. Its done by humans. So by saying that phpbb must not have been coded decently because it has so many holes, is like saying a car isnt safe because one man has managed to crash 8 of them in 2 years.

Again, its only as secure as the number of users it has. phpBB has been around a good long time, and as such, it has become one of the primarily used bb software packages. (Remember when ultimatebb was king?). The only hacks I have seen against phpbb's were ones that were caused due to admins not patching in a timely fashion.

While phpbb has had its share of hacks, if you stay on top of the patches, you are fine. A forum provides a better method for users to support each other (as opposed to just you supporting them). It also has a much easier way for users to search for past answers to a problem they might be experiencing.

I personally have never used mailing lists as a primary means of support simply because they are very tedious. With a forum, I can go to one central place, search for an answer, and if none is found, post it and get a response that much quicker.
