NOTE 1: This is a very alpha release of a somewhat tricky-to-use program, so prepare to work a little to get this program working well for you.

NOTE 2: Most people will have no use at all for this tool; it's really only for people running fairly busy websites.

A thoughtfull recent debate sparked some noteable essays on the blogosphere recently:

http://lessig.org/bl...rchives/003570.shtml
The Ethics of Web 2.0: YouTube vs. Flickr, Revver, Eyespot, blip.tv, and even Google
So there’s an important distinction developing among “user generated content” sites — the distinction between sites that permit “true sharing” and those that permit only what I’ll call “fake sharing.”

A “true sharing” site doesn’t try to exercise ultimate control over the content it serves. It permits, in other words, content to move as users choose.

A “fake sharing” site, by contrast, gives you tools to make seem as if there’s sharing, but in fact, all the tools drive traffic and control back to a single site.

In this sense, YouTube is a fake sharing site, while Flickr, (parts of) Google, blip.tv, Revver and EyeSpot are true sharing sites.

http://www.roughtype...0/web_20ier_than.php
Jaron Lanier recently called the Web 2.0 movement "digital maoism." Now, as if on cue, the Cultural Revolution has begun.

Lawrence Lessig, in a post titled "The Ethics of Web 2.0," suggests that some Web 2.0 companies are not fit to wear the Web 2.0 label. There are real Web 2.0 companies, and there are sham Web 2.0 companies. There are those that maintain their ethical purity, that obey the Code, and there are the transgressors, the ones that have fallen from the shining path.

http://radar.oreilly...real_sharing_vs.html
YouTube comes in for a bit of a tongue-lashing from Larry, being singled out as a "fake sharing" site. Larry notes that "YouTube gives users very cool code to either “embed” content on other sites, or to effectively send links of content to other sites. But never does the system give users an easy way to actually get the content someone else has uploaded."

I'm not sure that Larry's entirely right about YouTube, but I believe that he's entirely right about the importance of the "true sharing" principle.

http://joi.ito.com/a..._youtube_web_20.html
One of the central themes of Web 2.0 is the ability for users to control their own data and the ability for people to share and remix. In this context, many, if not most good Web 2.0 services allow users to download, link and reuse all if not a substantial part of the content they work on.

i think it should work fine from usb drive;
check the Search Folders tab on the options and see if they might be set to search the wrong places.

One option is to install our own program instead:  Find and Run Robot :P

ps.
don't take this as me saying you shouldn't use Launchy - use what you like best - i just mention Find and Run Robot since i'm not sure if you know about it yet.

It's kind of aimed at those users that you wouldn't normally sell to anyways. So even if only part of those that start the transaction finish it, it's all still gravy.

i think that's a good point.  looking forward to the report.

It might be interesting to offer this method to people as an experiment..  The only download i can see if the user has a bad experience there (ie they have trouble finding actions that they qualify for, or get rejected by services, or do things and end up not getting credited, or get spammed like mad because they used their mail email account), then they might develop a negative attitude about your software.  not sure how likely that is to happen.  keep us updated Ryan on how this works out for you please, i'm very curious to know the feedback you get from users.

Developer's Corner / Re: Is there a better TreeView control that works with BCB
« Last post by mouser on October 23, 2006, 12:55 AM »
the trick is to find a delphi components with source code (.pas); almost all such components can be used in c++
builder.

i've learned quite a few tricks about how to properly make bcb components out of delphi components (the c++ builder compiler can compile .pas but you sometimes need to do some tricks to make them work) - so if you find a component you like don't hesitate to ask for help converting it to a c++ builder component.

Living Room / Halloween - Dress as Cody?
« Last post by mouser on October 23, 2006, 12:25 AM »
I never particularly liked halloween - perhaps I was just scared of monsters.
But if anyone dresses up (or has a kid dress up) as Cody, post a pic and i'll send you a DonationCoder.com cody mug :)

that is an interesting twist.. not quite my cup of tea but very interesting and seems like it might be reasonable alternative both for authors and for consumers..

old version works!??
ok that's a *huge* clue.
now it sounds like it's probably something really stupid.

i've been putting off updated url snooper for a bit because i'm waiting to make an update for an IE7 issue, but i'm going to work on this in the next week or two.  please remind me if i don't.  thanks for the reports.

note: the screenshots don't do this game justice - it's not a single-screen fighter, it's a full adventure with some amazing weapons and cool enemies.  i think this is candidate for one of the most impressive flash games i've player.

WPN Fire:
This one plays beautifully and is just oozing quality.  Tons of satisfying weapons, tons of shooting, jumping, murder and mayhem.. If you're into that kind of thing. The cartoony graphics, special effects, and audio are some of the best i've seen ever.  Gorgeous.

The game has tons of additional modes of play which are really interesting.. Really quality stuff.

Living Room / Roller Coaster of Death -- Machinima Video
« Last post by mouser on October 22, 2006, 12:19 PM »
I could not put the title of this clip any better than the wired editor did.  My niece loved Roller Coaster tycoon but was very sad when we built a water pit and dropped one of the park visitors fell into it, who promptly drowned.  I wonder how she would feel about this experiment with a half-completed roller coaster..

One of the best things about sim games is finding some way to turn them into violent death pits.
