« Last post by mouser on November 07, 2006, 05:59 PM »
I'm happy to announce that HamRadio's Icon Tool review has finally gone public:

Please remember, writing these big shootout reviews takes an incredibly amount of time and effort.  If you appreciate the work and want to see more such big shootout reviews, look for the gold coin next to the reviewers name when you read the review, and send him a small donation.  It is only by supporting each other that the site will continue to thrive.

a lot of firewalls have a feature to shutdown all network connectivity - that might be a good route to go.

sc has a place where you can specify a number of directories, which will appear on your MoveTo menu..
i could add an additional menu like "changedir to" that could also use these directories to quickly switch your current screenshot directory?

i actually leave firefox minimized to tray when i want to use it, otherwise start time is more like 10 seconds (maybe ive got an evil extension causing that problem?).  ie based browsers start up nearly instantly.

.net applications (and thus .net framework 2) are becoming more and more popular; if you install new software on a fairly regular basis you are going to need to install it sooner or later :)

alainch - keep working on the ahk script - you'll solve your problem evntually and you'll learn more ahk yourself for the next time.

i really appreciate all the replies!
i learned some interesting stuff too.  i guess all things considered i'll just leave it with the onboard sound unless it comes up particularly noisy for some task.

i thought i was going to get a reply saying that the onboard sound is a big cpu drain and so for games and stuff i should avoid it at all costs.  it's nice to know they've improved onboard sound to the point where it's not such a big deal anymore.

one of the things that INFURIATES me about microsoft is there flagrant ignoring of their gui standards..
i think the idea of user interface standardization is important, which is why i generally dislike skins.

it just boggles my mind though how often microsoft uses some weird user interface stuff that i hate.  the idea of removing the menu bar from internet explorer 7? HORRIBLE idea. wtf are these people smoking. ridiculous. it took me 15 minutes of hunting to figure out how to get it back and get to the options..

very good point, it makes sense to me and 80k is a bit heavy.  anyone else want to take a shot at optimizing? the 20k one looks a bit too noisy to me but i could live with the 30k one, and i lthink it looks nice a little lighter.

veign,
depending on the computational resources, here's what might be simpler (which is always better!):

just one checkbox, saying:
[] creat versions of this at varying sizes

and then 2 edit boxes for resizing to a specific size.

the "Varying sizes" option should produce a page of resizes of varying sizes, i would suggest something like
10%, 25%, 50%, 75%,
16x16, 32x32, 64x, 160x,240x,320x,480x,640x

The idea being that this will be like a portfolio page where they can visually see what the image looks like in different sizes and choose which they like, rather than having to guess ahead of time what they want.

the slider thingy is a bit broken for me (IE6), it looks like the slider knob is on a bar that is centered on screen, but the actual bar is far too much torwards the right:

just as an aside - i'll tell you what i think is wrong with plugins:

there is a fairly high overhead and significant amount of work to write a plugin api, and then document it fully.  the documentation is important if you want people to code for it, and it's a lot of work.

now that alone would not be bad, but you have to combine that work with the fact that most programs can't support a significant community of plugin writers, or *ANY* plugin writers.  what this means is that it's a lot of work for something that may never get used.

there are of course exceptions to this, like firefox which has broken through and is plugin crazy now.

my point is that it's a lot of work and it's essentially a gamble for most projects.  if you knew people would write plugins in a serious way it would probably be a much more common thing.
