Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review: Altiris SVS
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 27, 2007, 04:18 AM »
Cool Mini-Review, cthorpe!
I had no idea that svs worked like this. I have tried sandboxie and it works in a completelly different way. It packs the whole disk activity into a file, when you check in windows explorer, there's nothing there. This concept seems more interesting, though. Not sure if it is "safer" or not, but from what you're shown, it appears to retain all the most important stuff on activation/deactivation of layers.
Not much time ago i was having trouble explainin to KenR how this kind of stuff works, i guess you made it pretty clear :)
Thanks!!

EhEh Your Coding companion is quite something, farmsteader!
I wish i'd have that guy next to me while coding!
Does he debug the code you make? ;)

I must say i envy your workspace, specially that notebook stand. Being able to use the computer while in the couch for long periods must be amazing :)

Yeah that's "Old School Cody" - that one is bound to be a collector's item.
Correct!
Although i'd never sell it, it will probably be worth millions :D
And it'll be the first (and probably only ;)) collector's item i'll have :)

Thanks for the review, dhuser!
That app looks good, and it being freeware is yet another reason for trying it!
Cool post

PS: i've edited your post to include the inline attachment. To know more about how to do it, see This Post

After all, i did have 2 minor requests:
I think the up arrow should do the same as the down arrow (go to the results) but starting on the end of the list.
Also, ctrl-left should only delete a word when there's a path there. I use ctrl-Left and ctrl-right to move between words a lot.

EhEh Darwin.. My feelings exactly. Looks like the typical apple thing: make other's product beautiful, make it sound like a new revolutionary thing, make a cool webpage for it and sell it at 10X more than it's worth :)
From what i've seen in the movies, it doesn't sound to me that there's something important there.

If MacOS was ported and sold as a viable alternative to Windows on existing hardware it would benefit everyone - not least Apple who would expand their OS market share exponentially.
Yes, i think that mac OS has a giant potential, but just as you said,

While Jobs and co. are committed to style beyond substance and the perennial aim to sell basic hardware at ridiculously inflated prices MS will maintain its dominance.
I think the worst problem is the hardware.
I'm not sure you're right about "style beyond substance". They do have a giant marketing machine, and they probably put as much money into style developing as they put in software developing. BUT, mac OS does have amazing features (being the one i'm most interested that thing that farr resembles of, can't remember the name) that i think MS should copy. I mean.. Why did they copy that widgets thing and they didn't copy the virtual desktops thing? Or the finder?
I think there's a lot wrong with apple, but they do put money into developing new concepts. MS only looks interested in copying the concepts that the other operating systems developed and not trying anything new.

The one i find most interesting is "3. Improved Performance". When you have an OS that takes half the system resources for itself, how can it improve performance?
Do they mean that incompressing a 4gb rar file will be faster in vista then it is on windows?
Or maybe they only say that because vista will make you have to upgrade your hardware and thus make your computer faster?
Also, don't forget about "8. Easier Search and Organization". That's easy to improve, as there's NO search or organization in XP. Also, most of us already use programs for that that most probably are better then the functions in vista.

I'm finding this most disapointing. Truth is that more and more people are asking me the "why windows vs mac OS" and i'm starting to find that there are no acceptable answers. It's sad to see so much good stuff in mac's OSs and nothing new in windows. One would expect that with so much time and money they'd come up with something really fantastic.
I'm very sorry to say i think the next generation's OS might very well be made by apple. :(

vim. You can map font sizes and window sizes to keyboard shortcuts.
That's interesting, i was just now looking for something like that for vim. Unfortunatelly, couldn't find any plugin for it. :(

I'm glad you like it!!
Quoting mouser, 'it appears that gridmove is creating quite a fanbase'.
Fantastic! :D

I would like to know if there are any plans to update the Grid Creator applications, of if somebody could put up a little tutorial....
Yeah, you're right, the gridcreator totaly sucks :(
The thing is: i'm not exactly sure how to improve it.
So, on the next update, i'll include a bunch of new grids, and i think you're right, i'll make a decent tutorial on how to create grids!

These are some features I would love to see make it into FARR 2.0 Gold (Beta, since your beta is final, and alpha is beta ;-) ).  I think JGPAIVA has a list of things he would like to see as well, perhaps he could post here too.
Well... As far as farr's 2.0 version goes, i don't think i have any special requests, since mouser made a great work in fufilling them all.
Now, iirc the only 2 things missing are indexing and "actions", but that's for V3.

Sounds more and more to me like a memory issue or a heat/power issue.
Very good point!
On one of my old computers, i had constant blue screens and reboots, and there were errors in everything. I then found that the processor's fan had stopped working a few months ago. And i was thinking it was win98's fault..  ;D ;D

I can't really help, as i'm as puzzled as you are, but here's a word of confidence and support:
Were here for you.

As for having trouble, it might just be anything unrelated to the programs you mentioned. My advice? Start with XP, and install only those 3 programs. Chances are that there's something external to those that is creating the trouble. Also, as you mentioned winamp and kmplayer, maybe the issue could be related to sound codecs.

Notice that usually, problems with computers don't make any sense until you find the root of the problem. There are so many things that can fail, that usually the explanation isn't obvious at all. In my classes, i often wonder "how can something as complex as this, work as well as it does?".

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: desktop icon manager/grouping
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 24, 2007, 04:36 AM »
Oh, I got an answer in the ahk forum, and now i know how to manage the desktop icons with it.
So, i can get started on this program! :D

Here's my current idea:
The desktop is divided into a 6-part grid, 2 lines of 3 parts. (not custumizable at first)
Each of those parts has user-defined rules, based on the file's name, filetype, size and date.
for each of the parts of the grid, a icon distance is defined such that it only fits one icon, which appears in the middle of it. When a new icon is detected, which should be in that grid, that distance reduces to half and the new icon is added. This means that each group will be easily distinguished from the next, and that there'll never be space missing in any group. (although you probably wouldn't like to put 100000 icons in one group, probably ;))
This last part is why the 'align to grid' thing would have to be off.
Also, the group count would start in the top-left group, and count left-to-right on the top row and right-to-left on the lower row. The 6th group (bottom left), would be where the icons that don't fit any rules in the other groups would be put.

So...Let's hear opinions and redefines of this concept, please! (also, feel free to find terms that make more sense then mine, so that we can talk about this in a decent way, and i can make a help file that is readable)

Wonderful! It really works!

I find it interesting how much books you have there. Are all those on "how to keep your cat on your desk without she moving over the keyboard"? Or do you also have some one "how to not destroy your computer when it makes you freak out"? ;)

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: move small dialog windows to cursor position
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 23, 2007, 02:56 PM »
Notice that dialogmove is made so that this new addition doesn't actually tell the window to move, it only tells it where to move, if it is moved.
Also, while testing this, i found this:
Remember that dialogmove doesn't move windows if they'll appear beneath the mouse. A save box is quite big, so there's a good probability this will happen. Please confirm if that's the reason it doesn't move sometimes and others it does.

Well.. I'm not sure, but i think it might not work with 'align to grid'. We'll see.
Right now, i'm trying to sort out how to find out the positions of the icons on the desktop, let's hope someone answers my request at the ahk forum.

It sure does!
What was suggested in that thread works perfectly!
If you'd like to test it, i've attached a small demo that will move any icons on your desktop to a position you define.
(for this to work properly, you must uncheck the "align icons in grid" option)

[edit] btw.. this to-be program needs a name. any suggestions?[/edit]

That is much harder and it may be that only by using a heavy virtual machine approach could you pull this off.
Very good point, i hadn't thought of that option.
Although it's impracticle right now, i think that might be the solution in the future. I know i'd like it :D

is there no way of moving icons with autohotkey?
I should have thought of the ahk forums before. Here's an interesting thread: http://www.autohotke...hlight=desktop+icons
I shall look into it :)
