CyberNetNews.com is quite excited about the new AskCity page:

I didn’t think an online mapping service could keep a clean interface like the one Google Maps has and still add more great features. Ask has done just that with their new Ask City and it is hard to even describe how smooth the site operates. In the screenshot above you can see that there is essentially three “frames”: search, results, and map. At first I was wondering “what if I don’t need the results frame” but then I realized you can maximize either the results or the map by clicking the little box in the upper-right corner of their respective frame.

your bars are not lost, just do file open and find them - it just didnt save its memory of which launch bar files you had open.

Note there is a free version of this, which only compares documents you have locally (good for if you are a teacher and want to check for plaigarism amongst the submissions you have received), and a commercial tool which scours internet for duplicate content.

a new article:
http://news.com.com/...3.html?tag=nefd.lede

Digg executives say they are on top of the situation.

you can't fix a system like this - at the very core of it is a huge incentive to manipulate and game the system, and like google ad clicking fraud, you cannot win the war against people manipulating the system (and these companies probably don't really whole heartedly want to, since the fraud ends up helping them).  the only way to "fix" such a system is use a different system that doesn't incentivize fraud and manipulation.

LaunchBar Commander / Tip: Keep your Desktop Empty and Put it on your LaunchBa
« Last post by mouser on December 03, 2006, 06:48 PM »
I know a lot of people like to put things on their desktop, but i find it very cluttered when there are icons all over.
So here's a little tip for something you can do with LaunchBar Commander if you feel like me and like an empty desktop.

First, right click on your desktop and choose "Arrange Icons By" ->  and UNCHECK "Show Desktop Icons"
Screenshot - 12_3_2006 , 6_43_42 PM.png

At this point, your desktop icons will all dissapear.  They are still there, dont worry, just not visible - you can always bring them back by rechecking that option.

Ok now open up Launchbar Commander, and make a new node somewhere, of the type "Folder Node" and for the folder choose "%DesktopAll%" from the drop down list.
Screenshot - 12_3_2006 , 6_39_48 PM.png

Now you've added a menu on your launch bar which will list all "invisible" files and shortcuts on your desktop (except not the MyComputer and recycle bin, sorry!).

note: you can exit launchbar commander from the tray.

if it doesnt exit when you choose exit from a minimized dock on the tray, then i might have an idea what is wrong..
let me know.

Try this just to be sure:
exit program, delete the Settings.ini file in your url snooper directory, then restart and reselect network adapter, etc.
and make sure NOTHING is filled in in the "Keyword Filter" box at the top of the Search tab.

it makes no sense to me that the packets are going up but its not displaying urls..
the packets going up means its sniffing them.. it's hard to imagine a scenario where that would happen and yet it wouldnt find urls..

I resisted firefox for a loooong time, and for a long time I used netcaptor, which does tabs really well and uses the IE engine.
I finally started switching over to firefox in the last 6 months or so, as i got used to the excellent tab externsion addons.

When IE7 came out I tried it and while i was not exactly happy with the new UI, the tabs seemed to work well enough, and IE7 starts up so much faster than FF for me that i have been using it.

However it seems that the development team on IE really must have missed the Windows 98 phenomena where you would run out of user resources (user interface handles, etc), and programs would start locking up and beeping and breaking and just randomly misbehaving for no reason.  They missed it so much in Windows XP which seemed to have solved this problem, that they put it back into IE7.

In fact this seems to be a trend with MS (who i have defended in the past and continue to think does some great work).  No one write programs that are more incompatible with and prone to break and abuse Microsoft Windows standards than Microsoft itself.  It's one of the great mysteries of the universe that they can't seem to write well behaved programs on their own platform.  Maybe ms should concentrate on writing software for the mac and let other write for windows.

After two or three windows of IE7 are open, all hell breaks lose on my computer (win xp sp2); IE7 itself and other programs start to fail to be able to open new dialogs and windows.  Instead, if i'm lucky, they just beep incoherently when they try.  After much cursing i remember i have to close IE7 and then all programs start behaving ok again.

So, to IE7 i say: "get the F* off of my comptuer."

here's the thing..
it doesnt make sense that it could pick up none on that test i gave you, and yet still be picking up some in some other case.

let me ask you, after you click "sniff network" and then start browsing and opening cspan.org, etc.  look at the bottom statusbar on url snooper.. does it show an increasing count of packets it has processed?

ok if its not finding anything when you search in your browser it means its not properly sniffing urls from your browser.

the manual download function just scans the web page and is not as good as scanning the network live from your regular browser.

what adapter have you selected? do you know what brand of network adapter you have?

ah, nice find marc

now we see perhaps why agnitum is still so highly regarded by so many - it really does have a great feature set and a nice interface.  they just need to improve the quality control and pre-release testing.

What we could really do with is a simple app that checks all outgoing data for personal information which warns you and lets you manually block such traffic.

i'd like to know about such software too - i seem to remember that some firewalls had this.
(it could be written as an agnitum outpost firewall addon by the way - maybe a nice NANY project if someone is feeling brave..)
