Living Room / Nice analysis on why Google Answers Failed where Another Succeeded
« Last post by mouser on December 12, 2006, 12:45 AM »
Summary: In 2002, Google launched one of their few pay services, Google Answers. The service attracted only 800 responders in the past 4 years, and was shut down a few weeks ago. Three years ago, Matt Haughey created Ask MetaFilter, pays no money to those who answer questions, and has turned the site into a successful part of his business using, in part, Google AdSense to support the site.

Why was Matt successful where Google was not? Let's take a look.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR 1.13.01 launches SLOWER than 1.09.05
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2006, 09:37 PM »
keyboardy, can you send me your 1.09.05 ?  just the main program exe zipped up would be fine ([email protected]).

i believe you that there is a noticable delay in 1.13.01, but i think it must be related to something weird going on.

perhaps you can help me by trying this.  backup any settings you want to preserve first, and then try experimenting with telling it NOT to show the previously launched file history at start up.  see if that is where the problem is.  if so, try turning it back on but clearing that list of previously launched files and see if it makes a difference..  see if you have any files in that list that are on a network drive or something.

are you testing these on a clean install of the program or are your old settings files with old history and search paths being used.  if you are using your old history you might try backing up your settings and then deleteing your settings files and starting a completely clean install and comparing the two versions.

what operating system are you using by the way?

ps. if you want to email me we can try to figure out the problem over email which might be a bit faster :) ([email protected]).

Find And Run Robot / Re: Map to command line
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2006, 03:08 PM »
there is a built in alias called "run" that should work (though i cant remember if we tried it with parameters.
but basically you would type:

run netstat -e >C:\temp.txt

in the find+run editbox.  but maybe you were asking for something else?

DonationCoder Projects / Re: DonationCoder Programming Tips and Tricks
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2006, 01:53 PM »
i think we have so many child board already that it would be best not to add more.
sharing such tips is a nice idea - i think they could go on the main Developer's Corner section, or in the programming schools section.

« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2006, 11:21 AM »
normally you would just attach it at the bottom of the new post form, the same way you would attach an image - im not sure if it will like having swf's attach though.  if not, send me the swf from your mini review via emal and i will upload it to the site and you can just link to it.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Fantastic app - idea for faster searching
« Last post by mouser on December 11, 2006, 05:51 AM »
it's ok it helps to know more people want this..
while you are waiting please keep in mind that farr *does* cache apps you actually launch from inside it, so finding an app again after you launch it once will be super fast.

1.13.01 should definitely NOT run slower then earlier versions at all, if it does it means something's going wrong, either in code or differences in settings - i'd be very interested in tracking down what it might be.  maybe you expand a little about what you mean by "slower to startup".  one question i always ask is is there any noticable delay in if you toggle it opened and closed with break key several times in a row, beyond the first time becoming visible after a period of disuse.  And definitely check out the options lanux posted about.

i really like this idea of having it work based on previously typed key.. this definitely sounds like a coding snacks type thing.

is it just me, or does zaine seem to like xyplorer?
(personally i'm still preferring directory opus but it took me about 14 hours to find the option in preferences i was looking for.. so i'll have to check out the alternatives again soon i think).

might be nice to have combined both polls and let us vote for up to 4.
or at least make this poll let us vote for 3.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: suggestion: tabs instead of icons
« Last post by mouser on December 10, 2006, 05:36 PM »
Thanks for the comments - actually i have always intended to add tab support, so that you could have essentially multiple launchbars that you could switch like tabs or as your screenshots show, slide-out when you click the tabs - i just have to figure out a nice way to do it.  but i agree, the images with just the tabs sticking our look quite nice.

The beta testing thing is a good point - i think we should treat all NANY releases as first release beta tests (but they should be fully functional and usable please).

ps.
because the Accessibility Game Contest final deadline is Dec 31st (but note that you must submit first version by Dec 22nd!), people are free to enter a qualifying game as their NANY entry if they want.

What compiler are you using?

when i use codeblocks or dev-c++ it's mingw32; i'm quite fond of it and also quite fond of testing cross-platform c++ code  on multiple compilers - you always discover something one compiler likes and others don't..

Find And Run Robot / Re: Lost New Email Alias
« Last post by mouser on December 10, 2006, 03:23 PM »
Unpack this zip for the alias file that comes built-in with farr; you can just go to options and choose menu "Import and Export" and then "Import Alias Group List" and browse to this file.

It will just add the ones you are missing and not otherwise affect any you already have.
