when I click "copy or print" in the code box it opens pop-up which shows an "Â" before the pound symbol - oddly it shows properly if I click "copy or print" when previewing post

Tomos, have you found what you need yet?  If not, I'm working on a few ideas in Pascal/Lazarus.
Questions:
1- Would you want to always track time from 0? or should the beginning time be settable, maybe even from actual time?
2- Would you want to have the tasks/notes be running timestamped? or starting a new task starts from 0?
3- Should a list of tasks/notes be hidden until exported, or should there be a running list showing?

I'm having trouble getting everything to sync up close-to-perfect with real time, so:
4- What kind of time tolerance would be acceptable? Say, +/- 1 or 2 minutes per hour?

5- Hotkeys?

If you could, sketch out how you'd like the UI to look.  The Trout example is good, but a slider would only be possible if there were a definite 'quitting time', like say you only want to spend 5 hours doing what you're needing done.  A slider would be rather inaccurate as well.  In the code I'm playing with, I have buttons for forward/reversing seconds, minutes and hours.  No direct text entry yet.

Let me know, I'd love to stretch my coding muscles even further...

1) No / Yes / Yes - i.e. ideally would be startable from say 1 hour or 15 mins - starting from real time would be a bonus but not necessary to me.

2) this question overlaps with #1 (?) Timestamped would be a bonus, but again, not necessary to me.

3) I'd prefer a running list shown

4) a couple of minutes wouldnt bother me

5) Hotkeys are always good - but for what exactly :-/
Its difficult to find universal hotkeys that will suit every system, so probably better to either have customisable hotkeys - or no universal ones.
I imagine it running in the tray, when I think about it, mouse is fine really.

Wow, it's difficult to imagine an app completely from scratch.
I'm good at being critical of UIs that already exist - I can try them out and see their weaknesses. But I will give this a go and post some sort of a sketch shortly.

I gave it a quick go -
it is very nicely made.

Reminded me a little of ExifPro which is really designed to work through a batch of images and select the best for editing in external editor. But this one has it's own editor too - I liked the internal editor a lot actually.

There is an "Automatic" button which shows four different possible edits - these are preset but can be replaced with your saved presets - not sure how on-the-fly this can be done.. Presets are on the left when editing: the plus button allows you to add current edit settings as a new preset (logical but took me a while to figure it out).
Once presets are saved, you can change  them when in the Automatic view (with four images on screen). It would be nice if this could be done more on the fly - edit a bit, save one preset/version; do a little more, etc, in the end compare four edits and choose the best.

With apologies if I missed any of the following:

• Has customisable shortcuts, but doesnt warn you if they already in use - it just removes the shortcut from it's previous location.
• The workspace doesnt seem to be re-arrangable - e.g. the 'film strip' shows at the bottom of the screen: working on a laptop, this takes away a lot of valuable height pixels. It would be great if that could be shown another way e.g. vertically.
• Also missing in an app like this is compare images: e.g. split screen with two different images - ideally lock zoom and panning so one can compare similar images to choose the best.

Would be interesting to see how it copes with a lot of images. It doesnt show sub-folder contents, so I cant really (easily) stress it on this machine

I'm not sure how different this is - above is subscription for one channel, IIUC this below is a general YT subscription.

YouTube's paid subscription offering takes shape — and it's almost here (The Verge)

And YouTube's carrot comes with a stick — creators are required to participate in the subscription offering, or every video on their channels will be set to private, sources said. The move will likely upset some creators, who may object to aspects of the program.

• [Feature] A new "Quick Search Words" tab in options allows you to specify quick search word replacements; here you can quickly specify words that have alternate meanings when typed into the search box.  Start each line with a search word, followed by = and then the replacement text.  For example, if you would like to be able to type "ff" to search for "firefox" you can specify that here as "ff = firefox".  This just makes it much easier to do certain simple things without using aliases.  Note that replacements will only be made on word boundaries ("ff" will not match "eff").

I'm a bit torn really -
good  time tracking/management software would be good -
but my original idea was a basic timer that could be modified. Say it's running and I go out for coffee and forget to pause it -
when I come back:
I can pause it, take the 15 mins or whatever off the total, and leave it run on again.

The ManicTime suggestion would work around this by keeping track of activity. I find the $67 pricetag a bit steep - not saying it's not worth it. It probably would encourage good use of time...

looking for a timer where I can add subtract from the time shown e.g.
say it's showing 1:30:25 - I can change that time (via slider or numerically) to, say, 1:15:00.
Using a slider could be a bit like an mp3 player UI

Minor update, same url -- standalone shot window will now auto hide during captures, if option is set to hide main window during capture -- makes it a little easier to keep a small shot window on screen while working.

I use Adobe Reader as my main viewer.
It has a good range of shortcuts, good zoom controls, and good whats-the-word 'drawing' of vector graphics -
all of which are very important to me with PDFs.

PDFXchange viewer (not pro), I use when adding comments to a PDF.
I'm doing even better than you Curt - using the portable version

so,
the locations must be translatable - either directly, or in the sense that if you look up my german three word location, you'll find it in your english lang app.

I finally bought a smartphone a couple of months ago but am still using an old-style 15 euro mobile (real buttons!)
This is the kind of app that might prompt me to make the move.

saw a reference to what3words in our work newsgroups today

seems like a really useful mapping/navigation/location tool, though it may struggle with some situations (multistory buildings for example)

EDIT:  I'm not associated with this tool in any way, nor am I recommending it for any given purpose.  It just seems like a pretty cool tool to me but YMMV

Code highlighting is helpful - I presume that would be a minimum.

Preview is nice to have but doesnt seem to be essential - I especially like where I press a hotkey to show preview and same key to toggle back to code. I cant remember which editor had that - I think it was the one I liked least otherwise :-(
I'm surprised by the other editors that allow preview on a different tab but dont give you any hotkey to get there...

Code completion is nice thinking of Shade's point that to do it all manually is a good way to learn...
It is nice to think that one can learn everything, but if something is seldom used, I think having a button/menu-entry that does the job is not a bad thing.

Using a button or shortcut for most tags seems reasonable/helpful to me. Learning what things like float:right and clear:both mean and how they're used - that can neither be helped nor hindered by a button.

One thing I didnt mention before is I want to be able to write in German (on the resulting website) i.e. include in particular:
ö ä ü ß
I was told to use UTF-8 encoding and then simply use the characters directly as they are - I see some editors show them as special characters, some not.

Otherwise, as a beginner, I'm not really sure what I need

(currently downloading Sublime Text - thanks wraith)

Any tips will be gratefully received!

• (1) as a beginner, I want to be easily able to find everything.
• (2) using a non-standard keyboard (qwertz) I would like customisable shortcuts (bonus for exportable list of same)
• (3) would love to be able to compare files side by side (e.g. my version and someone elses - but this may be another category of software?)

My experience so far:


Web Architect:
50 euro/ free version (some limitations I think)

It is very beginner friendly:

• everything is easily accessible via ribbon UI

I didnt find it very user friendly:

• it is mouse intensive, and keyboard unfriendly (no shortcuts for very basic things)
• no customisable shortcuts that I could find, at any rate

NetBeans IDE:
recommended by gizmo - all I can say is: as a beginner, dont go there


HTML-Kit / HTML-Kit Tools:
free / paid version ($39 upwards)

• Free version had nice wizards to help when creating new files
• Paid version is newer version of same with ribbon interface but with lots of keyboard shortcuts
  wizards didnt work out-of-the-box

I preferred the free version interface.
Not sure why I gave up on this one, I think I simply preferred the next one...


WeBuilder:
($50/$80 home/commercial)

• everything easy to find so far
• customisable shortcuts (dont see any way to export a list of same)
• cant find shortcut for preview current file (but it surely is there - or customisable)
• unable to compare two files side by side (but as said above, maybe I just need to look at different type software for this capability)

As for your suggestion about the snapshot software, I'll take suggestions for an easy one that can modularly reverse each software's changes. I thought broadly that's what add-remove uninstall was supposed to do - but apparently it doesn't.
