Coding Snack Guidelines / Re: Can we make a single key show hot keys?
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 02, 2007, 06:08 AM »
Well.. Here's the original thread. Truth is this isn't the kind of thing that easy to do.
You see, there's no way to detect the keyboard shortcuts that each program uses. So, this would have to be configured by someone on a per-program basis. Maybe you should read the thread i mentioned, to see some possible solutions.

Another thing, wasn't the 64-bit editions included in the same DVD as the 32-bit ones? Or are things different for OEM and Upgrade versions?
Actually, AFAIK, all the versions have the same DVD. But different keys unlock different versions. MS decided that the 64-bit version would not be part of the same pack of the 32-bit version.

does that mean we could get a friend in canada to buy it and then ship it over without having to pay extra duty when it got here?

like Carol, i'm not going to use Vista, i'm just curious as to what would happen - you could even buy it in canada and flog it on and make a profit in the UK. it can't be that simple, i'm sure.
Nope. That'd be illegal. It could work, as long as the border control didn't suspect about it. If they opened the packages to see what's inside, they'd make you pay good money for border taxes. (way more than you'd pay for vista in the UK).
This also happens when you travel. If you go to the states and buy yourself a new camera, for example, you shouldn't bring its package with you, or you'd risk paying way more than you'd pay for it in the UK. (of course this would only happen if they asked you to stop at custums in the airport).

Here in portugal, apparently you can find "MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA ULTIMATE 32-BIT ENG OEM" for 191€. But i belive that "OEM" means it can only be sold with a new computer.
The non-oem version goes for 355€.
What a rip-off!

General Software Discussion / A new kind of search: guided search
« Last post by jgpaiva on February 01, 2007, 05:23 PM »
Well.. Here's www.ChaCha.com. They explore a new kind of search, based on chating with someone and that someone finding you search results?
I think it's just dumb, isn't useful at all but... It's fun!!  ;D
Just type your search and press "search with guide".

I think this is something along the lines of the recently mentioned cheat sheet (or something like that).
I believe it also was an idea that wasn't well succeded.
Pyr8: for what programs would you like this hotkeys to be displayed?

Living Room / Re: Make Google Go Crazy, neet little javascript trick
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 31, 2007, 05:53 PM »
Works on the plain old google home page for me,I'm using Opera Browser.
This works on images, and it looks like it doesn't work with google on my locale (www.google.pt) as the google logo isn't an image. Mistery explained :)

I was playing around and discovered the following:  When using the arrow  keys to navigate folder structures in the results pane, the focus switches back  the search box after pressing one arrow key. For navigation purposes, I think it would be better for the results pane to maintain focus, so that the user can keep stepping through the directory hierarchy, rather than having to hit the down arrow to get focus back to the results pane. This fits in the realm of being a minor annoyance, but I think maintaining focus (if not hard to do) is the way to go.
Actually, that made me find something too. When navigating through folders, if you select a folder and press TAB, the name of the folder is copied to the inputbox, and the focus stays on the results and the only result is that same folder. I think that doesn't make sense. Either the focus is returned to the inputbox, or the other folders and results for that folder should come up.

One note: do that while on the image results page. For me, it doesn't work anywhere else.

[edit] Actually, try it on THIS page. I'll be funner! :D [/edit]

it's quite cool, but i don't like the fact that you have to do the thumbnails yourself.
Still, it looks good :D

Find And Run Robot / Re: Humanized Enzo

I wonder if one needs to actually keep holding down the CAPS key while typing or whether the lock needs to be activated, the command typed and then the lock deactivated to enable Enzo's functionality (he asks with no intention of trying Enzo out for himself!)?
from what i understood, you have to keep it down when writing and release it to execute the command. Not sure, though

Developer's Corner / Re: Sorting Algorithms Compared
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 31, 2007, 01:52 PM »
Hmm, I guess I could have posted a reply here instead of making a new topic, sorry :-[
I just posted here so that when people see this post, they'll have even more to look at ;)

On kenr's post, did anybody take a look at all the algorithms?
Some of them are just hilarious!! Here's a gem:
A PermSort Demonstration algorithm.  The PermSort algorithm is due
to Patrick Morin <http:www.scs.carleton.ca/~morin>.  The algorithm
works by trying every permutation until it finds one that's
sorted.  That's right, there are n! permutations and it takes O(n)
time to test each one, yielding an O(nn!) algorithm.  No hate mail
please.

I have 2 reasons for not like it. The first one is related to it not being part of my browser. I have to hover over the link, it comes up but i have to wait a bit for it to load the image. I don't like that wait.
Also, I frequently use the mouse to help me read (by selecting the text i already read) and this would interfeer too much with that type of reading.

(notice that the first problem could be solved with link prefetching, but i don't like that technique at all)

Try this instead: Click on Options with the left mouse button.  Hold down the right mouse button, and move the mouse over the main part of the bubble, then release the right mouse button, and click on the disable button.
Cool, it worked!
2866
I think it can be disabled on the bubble itself:
Screenshot-07_01_31,15_23_23.png

I'm not sure, though, as i can't test it. When i move the mouse to the inside of that square, the freakin thing goes away. It's most anoying. (running opera here, which probably has some influence)

I want to change my vote!!
Grr...  >:(
I inadvertedly voted for plugins when i wanted to vote for indexing! Sorry :(

While i think it'd be nice to have farr search even more stuff, i think that it's more important for t to be able to search my whole disk. That'd make it just perfect :)

If it wasn't for a DC buddy, I would have stopped about 1/4 of the way through.
Agreed. I also found the process a bit too tedious. And i ended up doing a few mistakes because i became distracted. (i think that's the idea, though. am i right?)

Living Room / How Much Data Is That?
« Last post by jgpaiva on January 29, 2007, 09:49 AM »
Here's an interesting page which gives you some idea of how much data the values in multiples of Bytes mean:
Whenever we discuss quantities of data, we tend to do it in the abstract. We speak of a kilobyte, or a megabyte or a gigabyte without really knowing what it represents.

The following table shows various quantities of bytes, in each power of ten. Usually, they are shown with multiples of 2 and 5 also. For example, 1 Kilobyte, 2 Kilobytes, 5 Kilobytes.

here's the one i personally find most interesting:
5 Exabytes: All words ever spoken by human beings.

For more info on how MB,TB,EB, etc relate, check This wikipedia page

Found through StumbleUpon

- but is it like this today?
;D ;D Good point, Curt. I guess they must have fixed this by now.
Still, i find it intriguing that when i browse the RECYCLER protected folder with XYplorer on one of my disks, i find a file there that isn't in my recycle bin

« Last post by jgpaiva on January 29, 2007, 03:06 AM »
I knew about this, and the first time i saw it i thought the same you did: do they keep my e-mail?
A simple way to use this while protecting yourself against it is to put random letters in the middle of your e-mail and then remove them with an image editor.
2874
jgpaiva: do you use FAT32 partitions, by any chance?
No, f0dder, only ntfs.
BTW, here's an interesting article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136517
I had no idea that there could be files in the recycle bin that can't be deleted. I think i have a similar problem in one of my disks.
2875
The size of file allowed in the recylce bin depends on how big your bin is (I think) under NTFS. If a file is too big you get a warning message asking if you want to delete the file permanently.
Actually, that's something i find strange. For some reason, although you can set manually the size of the recycle bin, its max size is at max 4GB!
That's a limitation, even if you set it for more than that, it'll always reset to that value.
For me, that's unfortunate, as i use the 'don't confirm on recycle' option, and would love if the recycle bin worked as a 'marked for deletion' kind of thing.
