Mini-Reviews by Members / New Disclosure Line Required When you Write a Mini-Review
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2006, 08:40 PM »
We have not had any cases of the author of a mini-review writing a review for payment, but with all the current publicity around these pay-per-post services which are paying people to write about products, i thought we should be proactive.

I have added a field to the mini review template which explicitly requires mini-review authors to disclose any relationship they might have with a product/company they are reviewing.  This will be present in our full reviews as well:

Screenshot - 12_17_2006 , 8_31_24 PM.png

Remember, any time you write about any program/service whose relationship to you is not obvious by the nature of the post, you must disclose your relationship. Furthermore, we do not allow people to make paid posts on this forum, even with disclosure.

I think these rules are important in ensuring that the opinions you read on this forum and website reflect the real views of real people.

Unlike many sites, we welcome authors to post about their own software here, in the appropriate places and with a clear indication that they are talking about their own stuff.

Also be sure to use the "Mini-Review" template from the preset text drop down box on the new post form - it will create a skeleton of a mini review for you so you just have to fill in the details.

UrlSnooper / Re: I upgraded, new URLSnooper dissapears
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2006, 02:11 PM »
thanks for the heads up mateek - i wonder if anyone else is experiencing this problem..
can you tell me what older version you are using that works?

ps.
the new version still has the features of the old version, you just have to go to File -> Advanced mode and you will see your old familiar interface.

if you want to try the new version again, you might try deleting the old UrlSnooper.ini file before you run the new version in case there was something there confusing it..

Find And Run Robot / FARR Task Control - What features do you want?
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2006, 09:37 AM »
we've talked about adding task control to farr,
i'm thinking of letting you type something like *tasks\blah..
to show all running tasks matching blah..

now my question is, what operations would you like to perform on such tasks (presumably through a context menu)?

do people still want this?

Find And Run Robot / Re: Fantastic app - idea for faster searching
« Last post by mouser on December 17, 2006, 09:31 AM »
nontroppo i am engaged in a prolonged tear of work on farr this last week;
folder searching and adaptive history are mostly done (testing folder searching now and tweaking it).

so if you dont let me forget i will try to tackle these too.

but do keep in mind that i'm not building an index yet so its natural that there is going to be some disk access.

i think it is also imp to remember, as far as i understand it, that the disk io you see in a process monitor doesnt really tell you if these reads are occuring physically on the disk vs. being cached by windows or even hard disk cache.  so it can be quite misleading to look at that number as actual physical disk activity (someone correct me if i'm wrong).  Indeed one of my motivations for resisting building my own index is that the operating system has its own caches/indices (thats why the second time you search after a long delay is much faster than first time).

however i suspect there is probably some unnesc. acccess when loading history, etc., that we can still improve.

until thunder7 replies it will remain a mystery..

the nearest i can guess is he might have been confused by the email version of the newsletter which says:
If you do not wish to receive mail from us ever again - just reply and say so, or follow the instructions at the bottom of this email.
is it possible he read that as saying something like "this might be your last email?"  :tellme:

Because you guys have heard me promising updates for so long and gotten used to dissapointment i thought i should keep you updated here.

Folder-name searching is now implemented, but will need another day or two of tweaking before i release it.. I think we are going to have to play with it and see what works and what doesnt.  If nothing else it's a good experiment as we think about a more fundamental approach to this stuff.

i have to comment on this.

CVS is evil.  I have used it a dozen times and EVERY time i find myself like Renegade, completely frustrated and without the slightest memory of how to configure it to connect to the server i want.

Occasionally i come accross a site that has its source on cvs which includes the step by step instructions for configuring the cvs connection settings - without that i'm lost.

Several people have emailed me warning me that PolZegerully has been registering and posting this same message at every forum on the web.  Guess it's just spam.. Regardless, perhaps others wanted to know how to send a personal message.

And now we wait for the mystery of PolZegerully to be revealed!! Please let us know when he hatches his plot to take over the internets!

I can't believe i've never heard of these tiiks before, sounds cool if you are a c++ builder developer.  It's donationware.

Bcc32Pch C++Builder IDE Plugin Version 2.7

A plugin for C++Builder 5/6 and BDS 2006. It replaces the IDE compiler by the commandline tools and improves the compilation speed.
bcc32pch 2.7 is not released yet, but the Release Candidate 2 can be downloaded.

bcc32pch only speeds up the compiler. If you want to speed up the load-time of the IDE and the general speed of the IDE, you could install DelphiSpeedUp that also works for BCB and BDS.

Requirements:
Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista
An installed and already executed Borland C++ Builder 5/6 or Borland Developer Studio 2006 or Turbo C++ Pro 2006

DelphiSpeedUp Delphi/BCB/BDS IDE plugin Version 2.2

A plugin for Delphi/C++Builder 5/6/7/2005, BDS 2006 and Turbo Delphi/C++/C# Professional. It speeds up the time to load the IDE and it also improves the whole speed of the IDE. This is achieved by replacing some often used RTL functions by FastCode function that are optimized for the used CPU. It also adds some caches for function that work on filenames like ExpandFileName().

The $10,000 first prize sounds very nice, but do be very sure to read and consider the rules very carefully, especially rule #8:

8) Right to Use Your Work and Information About You: By submitting an Entry, you: ...
(b) automatically grant to Atom Entertainment, Inc. a non-exclusive, world-wide, irrevocable license to use, reproduce, create derivative works from, modify, publish, edit, translate, distribute and display the Entry, which shall last only through the end date of the promotion and continue for 90 days thereafter, after which all such license rights shall terminate, and any right that remain shall revert to Entrant;

(c) agree that upon selection as a winner of any prize, you agree that your Entry shall legally be considered a "work made for hire," with all rights therein, including, without limitation, the exclusive copyright, transferred to and being the property of Atom Entertainment, Inc.; (d) agree that upon selection as a winner of any prize, in the event your Entry is considered not to be a "work made for hire," you irrevocably assign to Atom Entertainment, Inc., all right, title, and interest in and to your Entry (including, without limitation, the copyright) in any and all media whether now known or hereafter devised, in perpetuity, anywhere in the world, with the right to make any and all uses thereof, including, without limitation, for purposes of advertising or trade; and (e) agree that upon selection as a winner of any prize, you grant to Atom Entertainment, Inc. the right to sell and otherwise distribute your Game submission on any of its websites without any compensation.
...

http://www.addicting...m/contest/rules.html

In other words, as i read it: even if you win a $500 honorable mention prize, you have effectively sold them the sole rights to your game, which they can then sell, distribute, etc., soley for their profit.

WHAT IS PHORP?

Phone Home Robot Pro (phorp) is an open source program that runs on your pc or laptop, and periodically "phones home" to a server somewhere to check if it has been stolen, and gets instructions on what to do if it has been.

There are a lot of services you can buy that perform similarly to phorp, in that they connect regularly to a central server so that you can hopefully track them down when they are stolen.

In general, phorp is different from these services in that it attempts to be extremely lightweight and minimalistic, and in that there is
no single service you need to subscribe to.

Instead, you can use your own web servers or ftp accounts as the home page for the program to phone home to and for you to leave instructions for.

It is extremely rare for a computer to actually be stolen or lost, so rather than installing a bloated program on your pc that tries to anticipate all the possible things you might need to be able to do if your pc is stolen, phorp works by checking a server for instructions from its master (you!).  Normally there will be nothing for it to do.

But, if your pc is stolen, you would upload some programs on your server for phorp to execute.  Assuming the instructions have been
authenticated for security to prove that you uploaded them, they will be executed by phorp silently the next time it phones home.

What programs would you have phorp execute?  Well typically a good option might be to run a remote control program that would let you connect in and observe and control the pc.  Other choices might be to install a keylogger, or a program to erase all of your sensitive data.  The choice is up to you.

NOTE: I put the 'Pro' in the program name because you have to be am IT pro to figure out how to use this program currently :)  I plan to make a nice easier to use gui tray util for it later.  Right now it's a pure commandline tool you have to make sure runs automatically on your own.  Special thanks to Gothic for helping me get the Linux version working and helping organize the program.

i couldn't agree more about new tab opening - you said it well.  opening a new tab in IE is inexplicably slow to the point of being unusable.  i also love the options in the Tab Mix Plus extension.  1000x better than IE tabs.
