I tried working on a project and got so sidetracked trying to get git to work the way I wanted to that I moved the project to Mercurial so I could actually work on the project instead of spending all my time fiddling with git.

What I've ended up doing is being productive using Mercurial, then when I get to a place where I'm ready for the cloud builder to make a test build for me, I copy all the files over to a separate git repo to add/push the changes to let the cloud do its job.

I probably just need more time to force myself to learn the git tools, but right now I'm finding it really hard and frustrating to do things that are so easy and natural for me to do using Mercurial's tools.

Hm... Now I can't find the Reddit post again. Maybe it already was disqualified?

Are you sure it was on Reddit?

Hmm, Firefox Nightly x64 for Windows install folder is 5 days old and already it is loading slowly.  Super Start speed dial is no fast loader.  But it is loading noticeably slower now.  This is really the pits.

Perhaps SpeedyFox will help you out?

An 8TB single drive is a beautiful thing.

Until it dies.

Yeah, but they're (relatively) cheap enough to buy two (or more) for redundancy. :)

Can I hear some opinions on how important the Bookmarking mod is to people? Thats the one responsible for this page:

I used to use that feature a lot. But I haven't added a new bookmark since mid-2012, almost exactly 3 years ago.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced
« Last post by Deozaan on July 20, 2015, 07:18 PM »
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Windows 10 will officially be supported until 2020, with long-term support going until 2025.

That sounds very much like the life cycle of all past editions of Windows. So what's up with that?

I'll try to find the link again.

EDIT: Found it!

According to an updated support document published to Microsoft’s site, the company will offer “mainstream support” for Windows 10 through October 13, 2020, and “extended support” (that is, how long you can expect Microsoft to issue Windows 10 security fixes) through October 14, 2025.

For those keeping score at home, the five-year mainstream support and ten-year extended support periods are more or less in line with the support cycles for Windows Vista, 7, and 8, so you won’t be cut off early, support-wise, with Windows 10.

I'm still waiting on the Mint 17.2 XFCE's official release. But the upgrade from 17 to 17.1 went smoothly for me. I can't imagine it would get worse going from 17 or 17.1 to 17.2.

Nice and just a note from the CarotDAV website so everyone knows...

By default, passwords are saved with no encryption. -> In the setting file, there are login IDs and raw passwords. By default, it is not encrypted. If you want to avoid risk, use master password.

Weird. The website also says (emphasis added):

Includes automatic file-splitting (e.g. OneDrive's 25 meg file size limit) and doesn't store passwords in plain text. For additional security, a master password can be set.

The 101240 OOBE has a whole new feel (and EULA Acceptance) to it.

Anyone got a link to the EULA? I got careless and clicked through it without reading it, thinking it was the same one I accepted when I signed up for the Windows Insider Program.

Heh. I just realized that acronym is WIP, which is often used to mean "Work In Progress."

I found this link which says it's normal for build 10240 to not show the build watermark, and has instructions on how to find your version:

Next screen is Windows version screen. We can tell you the way to this application if you never tried earlier. Just type winver in Run box.

Is it just me or does 10240(?) no longer show the build number in the corner of the screen anymore? How am I supposed to know what build I'm on without that thing?  :(

Let me rephrase. Can anyone confirm (or deny) that File Explorer jump lists work in their copy of Windows 10, any build?
I've got 5 Win10 VMs running currently and they all work fine (both pinned and frequent).

Thank you for replying. I wonder if I'm going to have to reinstall from scratch to fix this. Hope not!

Mine seem to work as well.

If you set up a program like OBS to just record your webcam, you can leave it running while you're gone, just doing a Replay Buffer (of, say a minute) and then hook into that (or some global hotkeys or something) from some motion detection hardware/software to tell it to start streaming when it detects motion. This will allow you to watch your home get robbed in realtime!

And if the thief shuts down your PC in the middle of the stream, the streaming site (such as Twitch.tv) will have the stream automatically archived for a few days so you can save it or download it or view it.

I just look at my bank account the day after payday... no resistance required.  :(  :P

But how do you resist on the day of payday? :P

Yes. Perfect plan! Because criminals obey all laws, especially the ones that ban them from doing certain things or using certain things.

And we will soon be able to enjoy all communication of the UK government, as well as access to all UK bank accounts.

Firefox has become pretty aggressive at blocking vulnerable Flash versions. So maybe it's not necessary to uninstall Flash?

Living Room / Re: How do you resist buying ever more powerful PCs?
« Last post by Deozaan on July 14, 2015, 03:29 PM »
I generally don't get a temptation to buy more powerful stuff unless there's some aspect of my current gear that I'm very unhappy with. Would I like a faster CPU or more RAM or larger storage? Sure! But what I have is doing me just fine for now. But sometimes I run into issues with things that aren't working to my satisfaction.

For example, for the past couple of years, my GPU has been causing me grief. The GPU itself is pretty good and can handle just about every game I've tried on it at 1080p with the highest settings without issue. And it can almost do the same at 2K (2560x1440). But it has only a single fan, which is of poor quality. It already failed once and got replaced, and the replacement started to show similar signs of failure/wearing out after only a few months.

So every once in a while I wonder if I should buy another GPU. But for the most part, I'm still satisfied with what I have.

Even when I am actively wanting/hoping to upgrade to something more powerful, I don't buy it until I can afford it. My definition of being able to afford something is having the money budgeted and set aside specifically for that thing. It's not whether I can afford payments buying it on credit. It's not whether I have enough money in the bank (and potentially forgetting about big payment X coming up next month the money was supposed to be used on).

So for me, it comes down to having a need/use for it, then saving up the money for it. And once I'm at that point, I don't have any reservations about buying it.

Buying something you can't afford is a big no-no. Buying something you can afford but don't need (or have a use for) can be an issue, depending on the circumstances. But IMO, if you need or have a use for something, and you can afford it, go for it!

But I have to admit I got totally lost on the subject of rebasing. Usually when I had trouble following the descriptive text, I could look at the illustrations and figure out exactly what was going on. But I'm still not grasping how rebasing works or exactly what it does after having fully read the text and studied the illustrations for some time.

Among other things, the following has a section on rebasing with images:

  https://marklodato.github.io/visual-git-guide/index-en.html

There's also this:

  https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Branching-Rebasing

Do those help at all?

Thanks for these links.

I've been reading more about rebasing from various sources over the past few days (I can't remember specifically from where) and I think I'm understanding it better. In fact, the book that I initially said totally lost me while it described rebasing in the introductory chapter goes into much further detail in the next chapter or two.

I think I've done enough research into Git to feel at least comfortable enough to try it out. And if I can handle it, I may end up making the switch (for future projects) from Mercurial to Git.

Thanks again, ewemoa!

Just to muddy the waters here a bit, it looks like a new desktop version of git is coming, promising "the same, native experience on OS X and Windows operating systems":
desktop.github.com

This looks interesting, but looks like it is specifically for Github. Not for Git in general. I don't use Github for my own repos because they don't allow private repos for free. That said, I signed up anyway because I do have a github account and I do follow/star/watch many repos on Github, and I'm kind of a fan of the whole gist (version controlled pastebin) thing.

as for the tv -- i used a wall mount even though it places the tv almost exactly same place a tv stand would put it, just so it would leave the top of the cabinet uncluttered.

Thanks. I was seeing that plank going down behind the cabinet and thought maybe you had built in the plank/wallmount onto the cabinet.
