Good to see you posting y0himba, set your avatar image when you get a chance!
Hi also to carl and chris - glad to see you on this thread

Addendum:
Right now the blog page (http://blog.donationcoder.com) is not very focused on the blog author of each item - but for bloggers who developed a regular presence, we would want to change that, and figure out a way to make it easier for readers to spot the original contributions of different bloggers.

Thrilled to see all the responses!

Let me talk a little more about my thoughts on all this.

A long time ago we set up a very different blog type system (using MoveableType), where we had a bunch of columnists who were supposed to write something once per week (each columnist had a different day of the week).

I think the schedule just burned people out, and it was yet another separate source of info on the site.

So when I decided to restart blogging at DC last year, I implemented something very different..

Go to our current blog page at: http://blog.donationcoder.com
You'll see that the blog items are actually made from forum posts(!).

This lets us easily create new blog posts based on interesting forum threads, which keeps the forum as our single place for discussion, but still allows us to extract a few posts a day for spotlighting, especially for people who aren't daily hardcore DonationCoder.com forum readers  (And the hardcore forum readers still see everything since the blog posts are built from forum posts).

I think this actually works great.  But what would *really* take it to the next level is if we incorporated more opinion and traditional blog-style items in the blog.  Right now it's mostly items about web/software discoveries, with very little personality and often focusing on things that were found on other sites.

So, my the idea is to find some members who want to be more regular bloggers, who might be willing to go out and discover stuff, or write opinion pieces, etc.  There won't be a strict schedule, or strict format.  You will simply make your posts on the forum in a normal forum section (Living Room, General Software, Developer Corner), but your forum posts will be regularly Blogged, and posted on the http://blog.donationcoder.com page, and maybe mentioned in the newsletter.  We could figure out a special name for them, and create a special page collecting all your items after a while.

In short, there is no formal arrangement we have to make.  I encourage all of you who are willing to give it a try, to consider yourself "accepted" into the blogging elie at DC.  Just post your essays as normal posts and we'll figure out a way to recognize them and blog them if appropriate - messsage me when you make a post you think would be a good blog or something.  Think of it as a trial period - if your posts get turned into blogs then you are a success and we'll promote you officially and give you permission to create official blog items yourself.  If not, worst scenario is you just created some nice posts on the forum that weren't quite blog material :)

And of course we will try to figure out a way to properly show appreciation for the bloggers.  Keep in mind that all mini-reviews and coding snacks get blogged, so any time you write a mini-review you are essentially creating a blog item.  So you see that "blogging" on DC really just means writing a blog-worthy forum post.  My challenge to some of you is to pro-actively try to write such posts on a regular basis, and we will try to recognize your contributions more formally.

Sound reasonable?  We can figure out more details later as well - i'm open to suggestions.

We will try to think of some more fun things to give to Cody Club members. Maybe we boost their chances of winning in the drawings a bit  8)

ps.
You mean I had to suffer through two weeks of not knowing what the exclusive Cody Club was just to find out it was a secret message saying "Be Sure to Drink Your Ovaltine"?
for anyone who doesn't get this reference - its from a christmas movie where the kid listens to this old time secret agent radio show and gets a secret message and gets super excited and when he decodes it finds out to his complete dissapointment that it's an advertisement for ovaltine.

This will be a completely self-reporting thing - you will be on your own honor to say whether you have been living up to your Cody Club responsibilities.  The form to signify you are in Cody's Club will be available soon - until then just act accordingly.

ps.
One of the tasks for Cody Club in the latest newsletter was fill in a short biography.  You can see under a forum posters avatar image above a red little note icon if there is a biography configured.  Some of you Cody Clubbers still haven't set your biographies!

Living Room / Re: Why Blurring Sensitive Information is a Bad Choice for Hiding It

As f0dder says, blurring is a *lossy* algorithm, which means that information gets lost when you blur something, so it's not going to be possible to recover the original exactly or completely in most cases.

The real lesson from this article is that you should be really careful about "slightly blurring images which could have come from a small set of possible sources (like a number)".  If you sufficiently blur something with some real variety it's going to be difficult to recover it.

Still - it does suggest that there is room in the world for a "cryptographically secure" blurring algorithm, which purposely introduces some randomness and color reduction in order to eliminate the possibility of recovery.

You might notice (or you might not) that I have re-enabled the google ads on the site today.

We're going to do this as an experiment or a week or two, and see what kind of income they bring in.

For those who don't know or don't remember, we tried the google ads for several months in the first half of 2006, because it is a potential way for non-donators to still bring us some income even if they don't donate.

In the end, however, decided that it wasn't bringing in enough to offset the annoyance.  I am curious to see if anything has changed since then.

ps. Supporting members may not see the ads at all (you can go to your forum profile to change the chance of seeing an ad from 0 to 100).

Cody's (Internet Citizens) Club

Cody, our rambunctious little bird mascot, has decided to form his own club and he wants you to join it!

What's it all about? Mainly it's about being good internet citizens and active DC participants, and working as a team.

In each of our bi-monthly newsletters you'll have a small assignment or two - like finding a freeware author you like and emailing them a thank you, or participating in a forum poll.

As a Cody Club member, we ask that you perform the Cody Club newsletter task (or else invent one of your own if you object to the one we've chosen) in each newsletter.

Sometimes we will be able to make our voices heard by acting together at the same time when a new newsletter is released, so be sure to do your tasks on time!

Occasionally club members will get a little treat, like a postcard in the mail, or a Cody Club iron on, or access to a secret website page or present.  Only Cody knows for sure!  We'll have a form later for club members to fill in with their address if they want to receive such mail from Cody.  And of course you'll get a special badge under your name in the forum to show you are part of the Cody elite.

To catch up on previous and current Cody Club assignments, just read the newsletters.  You have to keep up with all the tasks to stay a club member in good standing!

its a good point jdmarch, and your comments are right on the money.

the intent is that ALL words must be present.

but in fact only the first word is really required.

i could make the other words required as well, but thought that simply penalizing them hugely would have the same basic effect while showing the user a little bit more if there are no good exact matches.  but i can fix that.

(having the first word be strictly required is important for efficiency).

V2.02.01 is now released with 2 major new (long requested) features:
Keyword modifiers and non-contiguous search words.

See first post for more details.  Same download as before for alpha testers.
I'm hoping this will be ready to go public by Jan 12.

OneNote does seem like a natural match though, especially if he is relatively happy with MS Word currently.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Expecting for Chinese Language Version

Right now the only way to put chinese characters on screenshots with screenshot captor is Unicode Image Maker (https://www.donation...mageMaker/index.html)

I still plan to make localizable Screenshot Captor, but it is not currently at the top of my todo list because i have other things demanding my attention.

General Software Discussion / Recent Drag and Drop Mouse Issues Killing Me
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2007, 04:51 PM »
I've recently been encountering a behavior that is driving me insane.
Something has happened on my pc, don't know whether its related to new mouse/keyboard driver or what, but what's happening is that when i drag a file or object it occasionally "let's go" of it and drops it before i let go of mouse button.  it then instigates another selection and drag right away.

let me give you some examples:
if i am selecting text, with a held down left mouse button, it will suddenly clear the select and start again (as if left mouse was released and then re-pressed rapidly).

or worse if i am dragging a file in windows explorer or any other program it will without warning drop the file i am dragging and then select whatever new object i am on top of.  which is doubly unfun because sometimes i can figure out where it dropped it :(

the thing is, it's not the mouse - i've tried it with 2 mice..

anyone heard of this before?
28097
the more i think about this the more clear it becomes to me that i do not want to be using a search engine which has a very strong vested interest in sending me to certain sites rather than others, for their own benefit, as google does.
(ie. sending me to sites with ads on them, etc.)

id love to see a publicly funded search project that doesnt have a financial interest in bringing me to certain pages and i will keep my eye open for opportunities to stop using google.

google does a great job at what it does, but this has become like expecting the car salesman to give you an honest objective answer about where to buy your car.

Accessibility Game Contest / Re: my switch games
« Last post by mouser on January 07, 2007, 02:02 PM »
to me, the bounce and flight things were just little tests - they didn't seem to be real full games to me and i didn't spend much time looking at them (no offense intended).  but herder was a different story altogether, and really was a cool experience.
28099
Or how about a "sticky" (between invocations) checkbox/hotkey right on the main input window which would toggle the display between "Launch History selection/order" and "scored selection/order"?

i would oppose that - for such a minor issue i wouldnt want to affect the main form which we try to keep very clean.
i also have a hard time thinking this is something people will want to be switching between often (or at all).

sorry if i wasn't clear but the deadline is closed for new stuff;
but if you have bugfixes feel free to submit them; i've already made my assessments and so has michelle hinn, but there are still a few accessibility judges that havent, and if you submit bugfixes they will may get a chance to try those fixed versions.  but we are not accepting any other impovements.
