UrlSnooper / Re: which WinPcap?
« Last post by mouser on January 24, 2007, 03:12 AM »
the alternative driver would mean no need to install system driver installation like winpcap, yeah.
i'll try to give an update about that project by the end of January.  It's definitely something i would like to do I just have to consider strongly whether it's worth the time at this juncture.  I'm hoping I can find a little help funding it to at least offset some of the time it will require.

oh is beta 3 out already?

you know there is a new beta of url snooper which comes with 4.0x winpcap and includes some fixed for IE7 and Vista.  I thought i had made that available on the download page but I see I haven't yet!

let me rebuild a new url snooper beta with the newest winpcap and upload it tonight for users.

--

back to your original question:
i would recommend upgrading winpcap only if your current version isnt properly sniffing packets - i don't think there is another compelling reason to do so, and it's tricky enough that i wouldnt mess with uninstalling and reinstalling winpcap if i didnt have to.

Can you tell me if you are using Windows Vista operating system?

By the way, even though Michelle doesn't post here too much, the entire concept of the contest was Michelle's and she arranged most of the prizes, so she's the one that made this whole thing possible.. Thanks Michelle

This works better than a lot of "Gold" releases I've seen.  Why are you calling it "Alpha?"  What needs to be in it to make it a "Beta?"

Google has gotten famous for keeping everything they make in Beta stage forever.  So I figure I can become more famous than google if i keep all my programs in Alpha stage forever.

The only problem is that there is nothing before Alpha... or is there..

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer Eating My CPU
« Last post by mouser on January 24, 2007, 01:34 AM »
There is no reason processtamertray.exe should ever register ANY cpu usage, let alone 99% - so something went wrong for sure.

First thing first - the CpuEaterVs.exe program is just a test program available to help you test how Process Tamer works.  It's only job is to purposefully start using all of your cpu so that you can test if Process Tamer sees it and tames it.  It's not changed since 2005, so there is nothing wrong there.

Now as for your problem.. I've not heard of it happening before but it sounds like maybe something was causing ProcessTamerTray to completely freak out.  The one thing i can think of is to make sure Logging is turned on and look in the log tab of the configuration (or open the file ProcessTamer.log in the program directory), and see if you see repeated entries for something that might indicate process tamer is trying to do something that isn't working.

You can email me at [email protected] if you prefer and i can try to help via email.

Cody Says:
If you're already a supporting member and have some unused credits in your DonationCoder account, why not give some away to others on the site?

When you donate to the site, you get to choose how your donation is spent.  You can give some or all of your donation to the site fund or to specific people on the site whose work you want to support.  Check the top of the screen for your current credit balance (one credit is worth one dollar) or your Donation Credits Profile Page for complete history of your credit usage.

If you use one of the programs on DonationCoder why not go to the program page or forum thread for it and send some credits to the author.  You can give some of your credits to someone else just by clicking on the gold coin next to their name.  Or just choose someone at random on the forum and perform a random act of kindness by sending them some credits.  Whoever you donate to, make sure to leave them a little message when you do, that's the funnest part of getting a donation.

Your one time donation of any amount makes you a lifetime member, and it's the support of individuals just like you that makes everything on this site possible. If you're nervous about donating, just ask around a bit first, or drop us an email - it's safe, it's fun, and you'll feel good about it in the morning.

Confirmed -- 2.25.03 doesn't have this problem, 2.28.06 does

Thank you that's a huge clue.  I've added this to my todo list.  I should have a nice update of SC coming in the next week or two and ill make sure to fix this.

General Software Discussion / Re: Desktop state snapshot & recall software
« Last post by mouser on January 23, 2007, 02:32 AM »
Well, let's separate 2 ideas..
One idea is remembering which programs are open and where there windows are located.
It would be quite easy to write a program to save workspace configurations like this, and the idea has come up before here.  I think it's a good one i'd like to see someone take on.

The other idea would be to remember not only window positions but what files were opened and where you were in each, etc.  That is much harder and it may be that only by using a heavy virtual machine approach could you pull this off.

Some info on the phone call for the curious:

The call was actually from a google ads person suggesting we put google ads on the site - they didn't seem aware that we had been trying it.  When I explained that we removed them because we didn't think the small amount of money raised from them made it worth while, the person was quite surprised at how little we were making from them and suggested that given our traffic (he had some alexa ratings for the site), we should be doing 5x to 10x better in terms of revenue.

I am very skeptical but figure it won't hurt to leave the ads up for another week and see if google has anything interesting to say.  It may just be that our visitors are not the ad-clicking types!

General Software Discussion / Re: Grocery Shopping Software

I look forward to hearing the suggestions here as well - I like your ideas.  This could definitely be an area where someone could have fun coding a new program.

By the way seeing your nickname and "Grocery shopping" in the same thread immediately brought to mind the famous Dean & Deluca store in new york city:

Just a thought:
I tend not to recommend allowing Mobysaurus Thesaurus to auto-start with Windows because it may slow down Windows system startup.

I guess you could argue the opposite though - that the one time you don't really care much about an extra few seconds is at startup, when you are likely going on a walk to make yourself a cup of tea anyway.

(Unless you are on an airplane with your laptop and freaking out about the wasting batteries during the 10 minutes bootup).

I'm thrilled to announce that at long last the results of the Accessibility Game Programming Contest are now Online!

A huge congratulations to everyone who participated - we got some really fun and creative entries, and it was great to be able to bring some light to the issue of accessible gaming.

I'll probably be tweaking the contest result page for a day or so to correct any mistakes and add a little info here or there - so feel free to message me about any changes you'd like to see in your entry.
