Find And Run Robot / Re: ndff - could it be of use for FARR?
« Last post by mouser on January 28, 2007, 05:37 AM »
thats quite interesting.. it doesnt sound like it's a perfect match becuase of its flat nature, but i'll have a look and see what can be learned.  I think the next step for FARR is to use its own index.. Im still mulling over the best way to do that for the next version (should i try to use an existing indexing programs database or make my own), but it is coming in the future for sure.

Also:
Thanks to Wordzilla (anderson/mobysaurus author) for all the help with the HelpDesk and being the person who came up with the idea in the first place.  And also to Nudone for of course making another great Cody pic to go on the page :)

It's a good question, i'm sort of curious as well.
There are probably some power consumption charts on the web that you could combine with your electric company rates to get an estimate.

Ok first things first, credit goes to DC member Veign - I read about it first on his blog, Unhandled Perception.

Anderson (wordzilla) and I checked out a ton of Help Desk and FAQ tools, both open source and commercial, before going with this kbp.

There are some serious Help Desk tools that support tickets and assigning tasks to support personel, etc.  If you need that kind of stuff then kbp is definitely not for you.  Although I call it a help desk, it's really a FAQ system but with some functionality for users to leave comments and submit contact forms, etc.

Like many open source projects, it is a bit uneven.  It has almost no documentation and there are small things missing.

I did a solid days work customizing and writing php code to improve the contact submission forms and do other stuff like add translation buttons, and tweak the look and feel.

However I just love the clean feel of it, and the administration panel is suprisingly rich.  It is extremely easy to work with and works well and looks good right out of the box even without any modifications.

Normal users cannot add their own FAQ entries BUT it does have a full role management system so you can add editors who are allowed to add entries, etc.  It would be easy to give editing permission to a whole bunch of people.

Official Announcements / Announcing The New DonationCoder.com Help Desk

I am incredibly happy to announce that our new Help Desk / FAQ is now open and filled with content:

It's built using KnowledgeBasePublisher and I couldn't be happier with it.

I hope it can serve as a resource for frequently asked questions and answers and as a place where we can organize all the various tips and tricks and trivia about the site, and it includes an easy question/comment submission form when you need more guidance.

You can get to the Help Desk at any time by clicking on the HELP link at the top of all of our pages.

And if you have any suggestions for Q&A subjects to add to the Help Desk please do let us know.

Farmsteader, how do you like working in a reclining chair.. it's something i've always been curious about if it would actually work, and you seem to have taken the idea quite seriously.  Did you custom build that table setup? (bolted to floor?)

Inquiring minds want to know.

ps. I think that monkey has to be imortalized in cartoon form one day by nudone, as one of Cody's best friends.

all's well that ends well.  What are you making? It seems fun.

Yeah i need to get to work on the plugin system to support these kinds of things.. Let me get v2 out the door, then do some work on my other programs, and see if we cant get plugin support implemented in the next few months, sooner rather than later.

This site is not about illegal licenses - the licenses we are talking about are for the software we make.  See more here.

Just cofirming they are gone.  Never heard back from google - they never did make any changes.

Just as well - I'm happy not to have to make a tough moral choice about the ad revenue.

It's far better that we get our money by making people happy when they get here, as opposed to getting paid to send people off site to the highest paying commercial advertisers.

ps. Thanks to everyone being supportive as we experimented - really made me feel good about the whole adventure :-* :-* :-* :-*

ps. i'll have a new version out by monday with the latest improvements.

it might be more fun for it to be a lot larger.

hehe quite true!

oh and another things - maybe the actual text of the banner should say
"MOBYSAURUS THESAURUS
 for the voraciously wordy"

instead of

"DonationCoder.com
 for software connoisseurs"

it's important that the page be recognizable as part of the dc family but there is no reason we can't have some fun :)
