Fantastic!
Maybe he'll make a post about it on his web page - let's keep our eye out for it - definitely seems like something others would benefit from learning how to do.

Hi ruri,

This help desk entry explains:
https://www.donation...r.com/Help/entry/23/

"Our software is free/donationware for personal use.  If you are running your own small home business, we consider that the same thing (as fellow voyagers in the world of small home businesses we know how hard it can be).

But if you are running a real business with non-family employees, we do expect you to purchase a Site/Business License for the program you will be using..."

Screenshot Captor / Re: Capturing transparent windows with transparency - update
« Last post by mouser on February 01, 2007, 05:45 AM »
yes it's done elsewhere, i'm not the only one.

Obviously you aren't often capturing these crazy shaped windows, BUT if you use a windows xp or vista theme with rounded corners and such, then you probably noticed that screenshot captor used to give you a tiny bit of desktop background where the corners were which could be ugly.  so this wil fix that :)

How'd you go around finding the window extents? GetObject + GetRegionData?
yep, it's get region data and then walking the image and masking it according to PtInRegion.

Paypal seems to be working ok for me..

I'm always suspicious of such messages on websites - they often can be translated into:

"We're sorry but something on our site is broken. Please complain loudly or we will never fix it."

Note we have a bunch of other ways to donate: https://www.donation...te/DonateMethod.html

could you not:
1) Save existing clipboard
2) Copy selection -> do work on it
3) Return original contents if nothing else intervenes.

true, that could be done.
27758
nitrix are you using the lastest v2 alphas? I think (hope) they solve this problem. I'll send you the link.

The use of text selection as a universal interface is really simple - something FARR would benefit from.
can you explain more?
27761
cthorpe, we sure are.

« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2007, 08:02 AM »
i agree with this, iff you have been given fair notice about the new version.

maybe it partly depends on the price of upgrade.

for example, if version 4 costs $100
and version 5 costs $200
and the upgrade from version 4 to 5 is $50

then it may not really matter if they told you ahead of time, since your total cost to get version 5 would be $150, cheaper than if you bought the version 5 directly later.

BUT if  version 4 costs $100
and version 5 costs $200
and the upgrade costs $150

then you just got screwed by buying version 4 a day before version 5 came out.  to me that would be very upseting.

yes though i will point out that it seems the most need for captioning might be for sounds you cant see in front of you.  if you can see the object creating the sound it may not be critical to see a caption for it.

Welcome to the site Guatam, glad to have you stop by

Notezilla is definitely worth a try along with Stickies.. it's a wonderful situation when users have choices for both a great freeware tool and great shareware tool, and can choose the one that matches their needs best.

Member KenR should post here publicly the comments he told me when he tried Notezilla - he was quite in love with it and described his feelings in a very unusual way.  I'll let him describe it..

One thing you can see in the mod movie Reid posted was the "sound radar" which is quite interesting.
It does suggest that each sound should have a location in 3d space - which of course would be useful for modern spatial audio.  It does raise questions of alternative kinds of "locations" for sounds.  like some sounds might be point sources while others might be atmospheric and not spatially localized..

Living Room / Re: backup question - how much of a risk is fire?
« Last post by mouser on January 31, 2007, 05:42 AM »
brotherS has it right.. You are talking about an Expected Utilityw problem here -
the chance of fire is very low, but the damage that would occur to your pc and any backup dvds/usbdrives would be catastrophic.

Arjen, can you check what version # it says you are running in your about box?

I'm trying to decide which of these two major feature to work on next for FARR:
  • Indexing for Faster Search - this would involve building a large database index of drives/directories to facilitate faster searching
  • Support for Plugins/Addins - this would involve creating a plugin api so other coders could write custom plugins for generate custom results or searching custom things.

Which one would you like me to work on first?
27770
confirmed. will fix.

Living Room / Re: try my new experiment with HotOrNot pictures!
« Last post by mouser on January 30, 2007, 06:53 PM »
Ah yes let me clarify:
I've seen some of the incredibly painful experiments that undergraduates do for credit and sometimes money.
This is about 1000000000x more fun than those.

If you were paying someone to sit down in a lab and take it I don't see any problem at all.  My comment about distraction and boredom was more aimed at the case where you would be asking strangers on the web to participate for no reason.

at least have a warning on the website that a new version is coming soon so that people can hold off until the new version appears.

i think this is key.  IF they do this - warn you that a new version is imminent and tell you that you are not going to be upgraded if you buy now, then all's fair.

should be on screen at all times?

i think so.
also you probably know about such effects but you better really be prepared for people getting bored and starting to click relatively-randomly as the experiment goes on.  it takes a lot of time to go through 400+ pairs and when you start seeing the same pairs over and over again you start to get really restless.

i am a big fan of object oriented programming, so to the extent that ruby is a more pure object-based language is definitely a good thing.  although the author does say exactly as you describe, it's not the impression i got from my rudimentary studying of ruby and ruby on rails.

i saw many pictures many more than 8 times (im guessing like 30 times+) and pairs repeated a lot.
