Please note that maxthon and avant use their own tabbing engine.

What sound card do you have to throw in there and what is the onboard audio that is on the board? It all depends. I have an on-board audio chipset that rivals my SB Audigy 2 ZS. The quality, at least to me, is unnoticably different

I will join in and say I've, since XP SP2, had no security related issues with IE. IE has not failed me. Before the ActiveX prompts, yes, I had gotten spyware, but not on any sites that werent "questionable". IE might have a lot of exploits found, but again, market share gets you the most attention from hackers and exploiters. Not one of these exploits, again since SP2, has affected me.

I agree with renegade that the media does make a bigger deal out of the exploits found on Windows and IE than need be. I would love to see an Apple exploit or a Linux exploit or heck, even a firefox/opera exploit, get as much press as a WinIE one does. The reason they dont, again, market share. No one cares about a product that is used by less than 10% of the market.

f0dder: no, certain patches are meant only for a select audience. Check the list that are included in the POST SP2 packs of AP and RyanVM, I guarantee there are some that arent installed on your machine. Microsoft releases certain fixes that apply only to certain hardware and certain configurations which is why they dont show up to the general public. Heck, some of them you have to call microsoft and they will provide you a link for because they dont want the general public obtaining it since it can cause issues on platforms its not designed to be installed on.

One question, why use AutoPatcher when you could just use windows update? I mean, I dont want any updates my system DOESNT NEED. Mass installing all updates, plus ones that are meant for only a small portion of users, is a bad practice. I would trust that the software maker knows which patches you need.

General Software Discussion / Backup software with registry key backup
« Last post by Josh on October 30, 2006, 07:06 PM »
I am looking for a program which allows backup of files/folders like all backup apps do, but includes a way to backup individual registry keys or trees. Does anyone know of any apps that do this?

So far, I have had suggested Handy Backup and Genie-soft backup (not sure if genie does this, gonna check it out).

Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks!

Are you sure SP2 didnt come installed on your computer? Almost every new computer I've seen comes with SP2 pre-installed.

Living Room / Re: Problem with Windows XP MCE Sound
« Last post by Josh on October 27, 2006, 01:26 PM »
Heads up to all. I managed to fix this issue. I powered off the PC and reseated the card. This shouldnt have made a difference being that the sound worked on windows startup, but I guess it did.

So, problem solved. My thanks to those who replied!

Living Room / Problem with Windows XP MCE Sound
« Last post by Josh on October 26, 2006, 08:38 PM »
For some reason, I had an issue today with my pc's sound. The sound was working when I came home for lunch, but after returning home from work for the evening, my sound didnt work right. The sound plays on startup of windows (The windows xp startup sound) but after that all sound ceases. So, I tried reinstalling drivers. That didnt work. So, I tried reinstalling windows, same thing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? I think I had this once before, but I cant for the life of me figure out how I fixed it. If anyone has ideas for what I can try, I am desparate. Please help :)

Well, I'm a happy XYPlorer user, having won it in a recent drawing here. I have hardly even delved into that yet. Nonetheless I do like using the "best" tools, so I'll look at TC one day.

Have you figured out how to set it to intercept explorer calls? I still cant find where to set that so that when I type C:\ into the start run prompt or open my computer, it intercepts the call.

General Software Discussion / Website download management program/script
« Last post by Josh on October 24, 2006, 06:55 AM »
I am looking for a script that will allow me to create different sections for downloads at a website I operate. Ideally, the software will allow me to create pages based on categories, have a thumbnail associated with each download, and provide links to other information about the download. Does anyone know of any scripts or packages to do this?

General Software Discussion / Windows Defender Final Released
« Last post by Josh on October 24, 2006, 04:38 AM »
FIRST NOTE: IT REQUIRES WGA VALIDATION, SO PLEASE DONT TURN THIS TOPIC INTO AN DISCUSSION ABOUT THAT

Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. It features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it's detected and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive. Now with 2 free support incidents for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Windows Defender features
• New option to display Windows Defender system tray icon even when there are no pending actions needed.

• Enhanced performance through a new scanning engine.

• Streamlined, simplified user interface and alerts.

• Improved control over programs on your computer with enhanced Software Explorer.

• Multiple language support with globalization and localization features.

• Protection features for all users, whether or not they have administrator rights on the computer.

• Support for assistive technology for individuals who have physical or cognitive difficulties, impairments, and disabilities.

• Support for Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

• Automatic cleaning according to your settings during regularly scheduled scans.

Microsoft encourages all Windows Defender (Beta 2) users to download and install Windows Defender.

Known issues
• By design, the system tray icon for Windows Defender does not appear if you do not need to take action.

• Windows Defender might prompt you to remove some peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing programs. If you choose to remove such a program, Windows Defender deletes all the contents of the Program Files folder associated with the P2P program. Because some P2P programs store downloaded files in a default folder under Program Files, this might remove all files you have downloaded through the file-sharing program. For example, KaZaA stores .exe and .dll files at C:\Program Files\Kazaa. Downloaded files are stored at C:\Program Files\Kazaa\My Shared Folder. If you use Windows Defender to remove KaZaA, all files and folders under C:\Program Files\Kazaa are removed. If you have installed any P2P file-sharing programs, it is a good idea to back up your downloaded files before you run Windows Defender.

• You do not need to remove other antispyware or antivirus programs to run Windows Defender. Other programs or Windows Defender might prompt you to allow or block an action, but there are no other known incompatibilities between Windows Defender and other antispyware or antivirus programs.

• By design, the final release of Windows Defender removes Windows Defender (Beta 2).

• Windows Defender offers only limited Group Policy settings. The final version of Windows Defender will include administrator (.adm) files so that you can configure those limited settings in Windows Defender through Group Policy.

Knowing microsoft, servers going down wont be a problem. They have enough money and a large enough server farm to get this accomplished. Hell, You should have seen the MCSE 2000 upgrade video where they demo'd Microsoft upgrading the REDMOND domain to Windows 2000. Was a HUGE DATA CENTER, and I do mean huge.

What I still dont understand is how firefox can be so slow at startup and use so much memory when opera has managed to be fast to start and use less memory on ALL PLATFORMS (Windows, *nix, BSD, Solaris, HP-UX). As I said above, the whole "IE is preloaded" argument doesnt hold any water anymore. Its been disproven time and time again. Opera has managed to start as fast, if not faster, than IE on the windows platform. Why firefox has not optimized its code is beyond me. Bugs that have existed in the firefox browser since .1, are still existent and dont show any signs of being fixed. That doesnt inspire much confidence in a browser to me. Anyways, I am on maxthon now with IE7. Works great, fast, and all my plugins and addons work.
