cowcrombie,
it's definitely possible - i've done it myself.

you need a modem that supports answering machine / voice mail type technology and soft software that can control the modem.

this thread discusses software for using your pc as an answering machine but basically any software+modem that can do answering machine functions on your pc can also let you dial your phone from your pc:

Find And Run Robot / Re: CPU Freezes
« Last post by mouser on February 05, 2007, 10:18 AM »
Well you can attach to it and debug it but im not sure what good that would do.

Happens after you launch something - this sounds like the old problem we had where a digit key was sort of retriggering search as the form was closing.  It wouldn't surprise me terribly if this was what was happening again after i made changes to the key launching recently..

What keys are you using to launch farr? Tell me again if it's non-english keyboard?

The only thing that confuses me is that im not sure why farr wouldn't pop back up again even if this is happening.

does it happen while it's searching, or while minimized?
what setting do you have for "Inactive Memory Use" on General Options tab?

Welcome to the site patrick - your blog has been discussed here a few times and i'm a regular reader.  It's a tad too focused on maximizing profits for my normal tastes (that's not a knock on your site at all just a comment on the kinds of blogs i normally read), but it really does make for interesting reading and I think it's a wonderful resource for new microisv people to get insight into selling their own software.  I think it's incredibly rare for someone to be so honest about how their business is doing and why, on such a regular basis.

Really nice to have you drop by

Nice find app.
On the other hand i do think it's not quite right (or night right for all programmers) to say that it's the same kind of motivation as solving puzzles..

I think much of the motivation is something like:
"I like to build new things out of nothing"

Whether you are a writer, programming, artist, etc. - you like to build things.
And you enjoy the pleasure of producing something of "value" from your work - the surprise of not knowing exactly what will come out of you as you work.. and getting better and learning as you go.

And the feeling of having accomplished somethig at the end, and having learned something new in the process..

my plan is to make a series of video screencasts showing all the different features and tips, and maybe we can put together a nice list of new tips then.

V2.00.42 is up (see first post in thread for details) - same secret url as before - message me for download link.

It's Mostly a minor update with bugfix, however you can call up control panel stuff (just type in control panel item description or type cpanel)
Plugins are coming soon!

This is getting close to public release time.
27721
its unlikely farr will ever be ported to linux, but these launch tools are starting to get popular so i expect linux will have some more good alternatives for linux in the coming year or so (written by others!).

depending on the age of the laptop, you may or may not be able to boot from an external usb drive.
during boot, go into the bios (del key or f2 key usually during first seconds of boot up).  see if you see an option for "BOOT order" or something like that.  See if there is an option for booting from a usb drive.. i'm afraid it sounds like an older pc which might not support usb booting.

do you have a floppy disk drive?  if so, you may be able to find a tiny floppy disk rescue disk that will let you get to your file system on windows.

is it a common namebrand laptop? if so you may be able to bring it into a computer shop and they could swap your hd into another laptop and fix it or otherwise swap in a new cd drive temporarily.

The fact that you can boot into windows partly does sound like it may be a driver problem.  Did you just recently install daemon tools? if so there is a high likelyhood that is the cause.  and you may be able to get your computer to boot by doing waht you said regarding safe mode but finding a way to skip that driver.

Developer's Corner / Re: c++ resources for the VB programmer
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2007, 11:29 AM »
back to your questions thought:

You can set breakpoints and debug in dev-c++, though its not the best debugging environment.  You could also get Microsoft's free c++ edition.

You've now encountered 2 of the many c++ pitfalls, and survived them, so you are on the right track.
You can initialize variables in c++ when you declare them:
int x=0;

Actually understanding why int variables are not initialized will tell you a bit about the mindset of c++ coders and compiler designers.  C and C++ are designed for speed - so unless you specifically tell the program to set the variable, it's not going to waste precious cpu cycles doing it for you.

I agree with Eoin, not only might c# be a better match, but it's a more modern and "pure" language that will likely teach you better habits  (ironically this advice is again coming from a c++ coder).

Thanks for being so nice about the delays.
Here is a new version to test:
https://www.donation.../Beta/URLSnooper.exe

I can't guarantee that winpcap will detect your adapter, but i have tried this on win9x and it installs and runs without trouble.  I've added code to detect the operating system and install the proper version of WinPCap.

So.. Give it a try and let me know if it works (you may need to reboot after it installs if it doesn't detect your network adapter).
