Living Room / Re: Will Wikipedia Run Out of Money and Disappear
« Last post by mouser on February 11, 2007, 01:35 PM »
well i should say, i don't believe for 1 second that wikipedia is going anywhere.  I think it's mostly (as that article says) crying wolf.  there is not a chance in hell it would go away - as the author points out it's worth huge sums of money and there are tons of alternative ways to fund it.  It would be trivial for them to raise enough money to pay for their servers.  I suspect soon they will be rolling in more money than they know what they can do with.  But that doesn't alter my frustration at the fact they they have to go raising money each year which will force them to do things they'd rather not do and spend time on raising money which they shouldnt have to, in order to ensure they get their funding each year.

this is what makes me hate capitalism..
we could fund wikipedia into the next century if we cut in half a few sports stars salaries or advertisement contracts.
or cut in half the salaries of a few oil company executives.
god forbid the government fund something like this instead of building some fancy new jet fighters.

I think you've ended up finding some nice programs vicki - i suspect your searching has found some programs that others will find useful as well.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LBC wreaks havoc with my desktop icon locations

as a docking bar if you put it on left it will shift all icons a bit to the right.
if put on top, it will shift all down a bit.

ps: personally i like mine docked on the right.

I think Brett secretly hates num lock.. he's trying to rig this poll against it by mentioning it twice.  >:(

I'm all too familiar with this message
Chris, you're not saying you get that on The Form Letter Machine are you??

I'm starting to wonder... Won't this page become a spam spider delight?
Good point.  It's best not to put emails on this page but point to the authors webpage where there email can be found.  it certainly would be ironic if instead of thanks we brought them spam :(

Or maybe we can use a program to conver the emails to pics or something?

It's actually a good idea for a mod to the forum to obfuscate emails automatically - perhaps i will write it.  but for now lets replace the email links with links to the web page with email address.

Otherwise, the world will end....
lol.

i think what happens is that any avatar image larger than 65x65 will be resized which kills the animation.

so if you resize the animated gif to 65x65 it will be ok, or if you save it as non-animated.

remember that the farr keyboard maniac answer for this is:
tab autocompletes with the top item in the list
alt+# autocompletes with other suggestions.

or you can down arrow to the suggested subdirector and then right arrow to autocomplet into it.
alt+left arror backs up a directory.

so i think this stuff already exists..

This is actually a nice long interesting articles on some of the shortcomings of Java and why it didnt take over the web like many expected.

ps. RIA stands for "Rich Internet Applications"
27639
that's really odd..
what operating system are you using?
can you use the default test project -- is it only when you try to create your own project that it goes crazy?
27640
oh this is absolutely planned from the start.
a plugin will be able to return a list of results that FARR itself may have no way of knowing how to "launch" - and the plugin will take over launching, whatever that means to it.

(note that FARR does know how to launch urls so if a plugin returned a list of urls FARR could handle the launching).
27641
id be interested in hearing about what you finally like best and more about what features you might want - it may be something i could extend my program "The Form Letter Machine" to do.
27642
ok let's not make this a thread about farr plugins - there will be plenty of time to do that in farr section when the api comes out and is debated.

let's keep this thread for other ideas for giving away a copy of bds.

why is it that MS apps are inevitbly the apps that violate microsoft's own established standards..

sshdw86: the latest download has the feature now.

im still finalizing what the plugins will be able to do and hope to have an api in about a week.  they will be able to do several things - suggest results, affect scoring, take over actions on results, and even use the output window for arbitrary display of info.
27645
the idea to add a separate limit for dir completion results (presumably higher than for file searching) is not a bad idea at all.
27646
FARR is my Find+Run Robot program (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6624.0)

ps. no need to post when you want to try the alpha, just click the little balloon icon under my name on the left and send me a private message requesting the download.

I still have a copy of Borland's Developer Studio 2006 (worth a couple $2000) and Turbo C++ (worth $200).
I'm trying to think of an idea for a SMALL contest to award them.  Running the kind of big contests we have done recently is so much work - i'm not ready for that again.. but i'd like to do something.. any suggestions?

I'm really keen on seeing some firefox extension development.. so maybe a firefox plugin contest?
Maybe a FARR plugin contest?

Is that what it should be to make pastes the same size as the original?
there is no real answer to this question - it will depend on the monitor and the resolution of the receivers monitor - just choose something that looks right to you.
