Wait, are you using three desktop search engines? Are you storing the indexes in a server? ;D

My name is Mike and I am a software addict...

I'm running all three on a notebook with a 120GB harddrive... The indices combined total about 3GB - the largest being Archivarius at about 2GB with dtSearch weighing in at 580MB and X1 at 472MB... I still have about 20 GB free so am not worried. I *know* that I *should* settle on one (or at most two!) and uninstall what I'm not using, but then what would I do about the 15 file managers that I have installed, the multiple file/folder compparators, and the numerous reg-ex/text search and replace apps that I have installed. Then there are the office suites and the note takers/web archivers. Nope. Too many decisions  :P

Armando - note that as far as I've been able to tell, dtSearch won't index the comments field in word docs (or docx) out of the box. I haven't yet discovered a setting to enable it, either. X1 is the same - hasn't indexed my Comments fields and I can't see how to make it do so. Archivarius, on the other hand, picks them up every time

EDIT: X1 found the test comment that I had created after I posted this - doesn't actually show the comment field though, so it's a bit weird having a document highlighted without the word searched for evident in the preview...

Heh, heh - as noted elsewhere ( see this post), I've also licensed dtSearch and love it... My software obsession of late has been for search tools and I have MANY. The three indexing options I use are Archivarius, dtSearch, and X1. Likely, though, I'll stick with X1 on my work machine and move dtSearch and Archivarius to my other machines. Archivarius is awesome in terms of the formats it supports, its speed, and its amazingly small footprint. I was very happy with it on its own for over a year and remain happy with it. Of late, though, I have missed the ability to preview my search results with formatting, which led me back to X1 and also to re-evaluate dtSearch. Both are excellent. dtSearch is lighter on resources and less intrusive, but generates a larger index file. X1 generates the smallest index and has the best previewing capabilities and Archivarius generates the largest index (up to four times the size).

Sorry, typing this is a rush job - my four year old is having a melt down and my attention has been split between this post and his tantrum! Happy days...  ;D

Heh, heh - close, Chris! I have four notebooks, though... but they are all battle hardened and battle scarred!

What I like about dtSearch is how many search options there are and the fact that it's purely a fire it up and use it application - no scheduler, no auto-start feature on by default, etc. Thus, you index what you want and then update the resulting index/indices when you want. The initial indexing took on the order of 2.5 hours for 17 GB of data and updates run a "few" minutes (on the order of 2-6 minutes). Add to this the excellent previewing capabilities and it's a very robust search tool. I find it to be intermediate between Archivarius (still one of my faves - but dtSearch features superior Outlook PST scanning support and much, much better file previewing. Note, though that dtSearch is a 35MB download versus Archivarius' 3 MB and that Archivarius is overall the lightest of the three) and X1, which features hands-down the best previewing capabilities courtesy of its use of Stellent viewers but is prone to hanging and is head and shoulders above the other two in terms of resource hogging! Still, the latest version of X1 is much, much, much more stable than previous versions and is thus quite usable.

Acrobat Reader (or whatever they're calling it these days) USED to be a bloated PITA (think versions 5 through 7 or so) but using Adobe Reader SPeedup, I've managed to get it to start as quickly, and in some cases, more quickly, than the light-weight alternatives. Doing this means you get all of the other functionality that Renegade mentions - it just doesn't auto-load whenever you start the program.

Adobe Reader SpeedUp is a simple application that was created to help make the loading time of Adobe's Acrobat/Reader software bearable for everyday use. AR SpeedUp only needs to be used once (a process taking only a few seconds) and then your 'Reader will be transformed forever. There are also some tweaking options available.

Basically, you're given a simple GUI from which to disable plug-ins that you don't often use from starting every time the Reader is invoked.

:o  at that price it would want to work well  ;D

Indeed!

Just wanted to let everyone know that my experience with dtSearch has been first rate. I contacted them about an academic discount and was very pleased with the result. Add to that that dtSearch is a phenomenal search engine and you've got two-thirds of a winning combination (can't comment on technical support yet..., though from what I can gather it is first-rate as well).

Thought this might be a nice way to counter-balance the other threads that I've started on this board, which have been whinging and moaning affairs...  :-[

Just an update: I'm running a trial of the latest version of X1 (6.2 build 3591) under XP Sp-3 with Office 2007 and so far it's running flawlessly. The hibernation/standby issue I complained about earlier (under XP Sp-2 with Office 2003) has been resolved somehow... I still prefer Archivarius' speed and ultra-light footprint, but X1's fabulous previewing capabilities make it a compelling complement to it...

So... Er, shall we swap notes on our BEATLE experiences? On my admittedly ancient notebook, it hogged upwards of 80% of my CPU whether it had focus or not (or, for that matter, was playing a track or not). I've uninstalled it, but wonder if anyone else had any trouble?

I'm with Carol on this one, Perry! First., WOW! Absolutely first rate review. Second, curse you, Perry Mowbray! I *HAVE* to have one of these! Looks like I'll be spending my summer collecting beer bottles...  ;D

Anyway, thank you for the detail and the effort that you put into this. Excellent!

Vampire Insurance... Nice. The problem I see is that it *looks* to me like the hands are detached from her body. Notice the skin colour and tone of her arms versus that of her hands. Also, as a commentator noted, her left hand/arm doesn't look natural.

EDIT: fixed typos

Looks great, mouser. A very nicely organized kitchen

Hi psionics, nice to see you posting here.

Let's try to keep the trend going and keep this thread alive -- anyone reading this who hasn't posted yet, tell us a bit about yourself.

Welcome to DC, psionics! I agree with mouser - this *should* be the longest thread on the forum... but it's not even close! Hope to hear from others soon

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Breakaway Audio Processor for Windows System
« Last post by Darwin on May 26, 2008, 08:55 AM »
I've no major problems remaining with Breakaway other than the error message on system start mentioned above. I have to hit "ok", which shuts down Breakaway, and then restart Breakaway and all is well. The developer is looking at the issue and will get back to me.

Fingers crossed!

I only know about IndieVolume.  It crashes often for me also on a lot of webpages.  Kind of defeats the purpose, but the author is constantly removing bugs, so i can't really complain.

Last update was Oct 31, 2007! Seems to be moribund now... I've repeatedly reported a couple of bugs and conflicts (worst is with ClipMate) with no response. Sad, because it is an otherwise useful application - great idea. At least it is graceful when it chokes on ClipMate. Still annoying though!

Rocketdock is a nice program but you cannot compare it to Farr. That is why I installed rocketdock on my wife`s computer and Farr on mine :)

Ok They must be out there, where are the wives who are being treated this way? and why haven't they rebelled?

Crumb! There is an excellent YouTube video series on this by a science teacher in the states... just can't remember his name or any of the links  :o Anyway, his bottom line on global warming is in line with what Grorgy says above.

Today's Windows Secrets newsletter reports that:

Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 can cause your anti-malware programs to report the presence of Trojans and keyloggers that aren't there.

They go on to list two examples, one from Symantec involving ctfmon.exe (workaround: ignore it) and the other from PCTools and RunDLL32.exe (workaround: see below). Other issues are reported elsewhere in the newsletter including HP PC's with AMD processors being sent into endless reboots after Sp-3 is installed... Ouch!

Solutions are offered for the two false positive examples, but users are waiting for a fix on the AMD processor issue. Bottom-line - let's be careful out there, people.

Windows Secrets - XP Sp-3 False Positives.png

The workaround for the RunDLL32.exe false positive with PCTool's Spyware Doctor is:

Step 1. In the Spyware Doctor window, click the Settings button on the left.

Step 2. Click Global Action List to the right of that.

Step 3. At the bottom of the window, click Add.

Step 4. In the New Rule dialog box, choose "File on disk" from the "Select data type" drop-down list.

Step 5. To the right of the text box below, click the ... button to browse for a file. Locate and select RunDLL32.exe in the Windows\System32 folder.

Step 6. Make sure "Always allow" is selected in the drop-down list at the bottom and click the Add button.
