Living Room / Re: Betamax (a VoIP company) — a large-scale fraud?
« Last post by scancode on June 14, 2009, 12:24 PM »
I've used FreeCall (another Betamax product) for a couple of months, and haven't had a problem :-/
Good to know tho :-/

(Also, topped up my account using PayPal as I didn't trust Betamax)

I don't have any kids I could force to do it, even if I wanted to...my daughter is 23 and can't sew, and if I try to force my cats to do it, they will just lay on the fabric thinking I just bought them a new bed.

Good point!

No children will be laboring before dawn to make them, so don't worry.

That's as hard to believe as a politician's speech.

It's a false alarm, the program is fine and has no virus.

I'll make sure scancode sees this post and checks it out, and figures out what might be upsetting PrevX.

My antivirus tool (Eset nod32) doesn't see anything wrong with it, so i'm quite sure it's a false alarm; the designation of it as "high risk cloaked malware" by Prevx makes me suspicious that it's one of those "guesses" that these security programs do when they aren't really sure if anything is wrong.

When in doubt the best thing is to upload a file to an online scanner like VirusTotal (http://www.virustotal.com/) and get a second opinion.  I did this for the Teddy installer, and basically everything said it was fine except for PrevX which said exactly what you described, which again makes me confident that what we have here is yet another case of a security program scaring people into thinking a program is dangerous just because the security program gets confused.

In practical terms, you can either add an exception to PrevX to make it ignore teddy, or you can go into PrevX options and look for some setting that tells PrevX to stop being so annoying and blocking programs that it is only guessing about.

I blame NSIS.

I'm uploading a zipped version, just in case. Done, check 1st post.

Living Room / Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide!
« Last post by scancode on April 10, 2009, 08:48 AM »
[Parts I LOL'd with are in italics]
The Invisible Killer
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

Dihydrogen monoxide:
  • is also known as hydroxyl acid, and is the major component of acid rain.
  • contributes to the "greenhouse effect."
  • may cause severe burns.
  • contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
  • accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
  • may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

Contamination Is Reaching Epidemic Proportions!
Quantities of dihydrogen monoxide have been found in almost every stream, lake, and reservoir in America today. But the pollution is global, and the contaminant has even been found in Antarctic ice. DHMO has caused millions of dollars of property damage in the midwest, and recently California.

Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
  • as an industrial solvent and coolant.
  • in nuclear power plants.
  • in the production of styrofoam.
  • as a fire retardant.
  • in many forms of cruel animal research.
  • in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
  • as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products.

Companies dump waste DHMO into rivers and the ocean, and nothing can be done to stop them because this practice is still legal. The impact on wildlife is extreme, and we cannot afford to ignore it any longer!

The Horror Must Be Stopped!
The American government has refused to ban the production, distribution, or use of this damaging chemical due to its "importance to the economic health of this nation." In fact, the navy and other military organizations are conducting experiments with DHMO, and designing multi-billion dollar devices to control and utilize it during warfare situations. Hundreds of military research facilities receive tons of it through a highly sophisticated underground distribution network. Many store large quantities for later use.

It's Not Too Late!
Act NOW to prevent further contamination. Find out more about this dangerous chemical. What you don't know can hurt you and others throughout the world.

General Software Discussion / A software security dongle provider.
« Last post by scancode on April 10, 2009, 08:28 AM »
I can't really name them, but if you're protecting your software with some dongles developed in Argentina, and they look like this:

dongle_models.jpg

your software is not protected AT ALL!
(40 usd a piece + 60 usd for the SDK)

Software Protection System® has two methods to protect your programs: 'automatic'and 'Manual Protection'. Manual Protection involves modifying the source code using an API (Application Programming Interface), by inserting function calls to a DLL (Dynamic Link Library) to perform the protection process. On the other hand, the automatic protection does not need to make changes in your source code because it directly protects the executable (exe or dll) adding 'anti-hacking' and 'anti-debugging' routines. Furthermore, the protected application is encrypted to prevent 'reverse engineering'. All this influences your product is protected by an impenetrable fortress for hackers avoiding loss of revenue due to piracy. You can use one or both of the two modes of protection, if you prefer, thereby increasing the security of your system at maximum.
-The Dev's Website

The 'challenge response' API feature is 100% software based, and the physical key is not involved at all.

If you use the 'automated protector', fing up the dongle is a trivial task [not much harder than unpacking UPX]. BUT, of course, it has 'an impenetrable fortress for hackers', because it adds ''anti-hacking' and 'anti-debugging' routines' and 'is encrypted to prevent 'reverse engineering''.

A "please don't copy me" tag on the CD's sleeve would be more cost-effective.

Repeat with me... SNAKE OIL!

How is ollydbg shareware if it can be used for free and is $0 to register... thats funny
[/offtopic]

This software is a shareware. To use this program on a permanent basis or for commercial purposes, you should register it by sending filled registration form to Ollydbg()t-online.de. The registration is free of charge and assumes no financial or other obligations from either side - just be fair and let me know that you like this software. Even your personal data in the registration form is optional (use your nickname or pseudonym if you want).

I wish there code be a software by which when i exute a program it ask me each and every step to allow or not. For example when i run a process it asks me when it wants to change registry, it ask when it is copying a file, it ask when it is genereating a file and all other steps.

OllyDbg [shareware, $0 registration]... or Vista's UAC :-P

Post New Requests Here / Filename Randomizer v1.0
« Last post by scancode on March 31, 2009, 12:28 AM »
Once in a while I need to name my files with totally random characters. It might be beneficial to have a file name randomizer. The way I imagine is that the user select bunch of files and the randomizer would name the selected files with very random characters.

One another version of this software also could add random suffixes or prefixes.

I am looking for a solution that would work via right click in windows shell.

Try Filename Randomizer.

To uninstall: delete the file from your SendTo folder.

General Software Discussion / Re: MIDI data and screensaver
« Last post by scancode on March 27, 2009, 01:01 PM »
MIDIzzy works perfectly. Jabberwock's comment made me think about key emulation - if MIDIzzy were to press a normally-unused key (say, Scroll Lock), the program could run all the time without interfering with the mouse. As it is, if I'm using the keyboard to enter music into the computer (and using the mouse at the same time), I have to disable MIDIzzy and remember to restart it when I'm done.

I feel bad, since I have really no idea what was involved in coding this, and I appreciate it greatly, but I would have the following feature requests if you decide to follow up.
1. My MIDI ports are longer than the control size. I have three that appear identical when truncated. E.g. "1:Roland SC-8850 MIDI IN 1"
2. It would be nice to minimize to tray.

Again, thanks so much - it's very usable and useful as is.

Cheers,
Eric

No problem! Give me a couple minutes!

Instructions

    • Run the program.
    • Select the MIDI interface.
    • Enjoy.
    What's new in v1.1?
      • Minimizes to tray.
      • Sends Scroll Lock instead of moving the mouse.
      • GUI is wider.
      What was new in v1.0?
        • First version!
        • It works! [or should :P]

General Software Discussion / Re: Remove Item In "Add/Remove Programs"
          « Last post by scancode on March 26, 2009, 09:58 PM »
I'm trying to remove an item in "Add/Remove Programs". When I click "remove" it says that such-and-such file cannot be found. Normally it would ask me if I would like to remove the entry from the "Add/Remove Programs" list, but this item doesn't do that. So I go to delete the item from "Program Files" and check back to see if it asks me to remove the entry. Nope; doesn't ask. I do have "Windows Installer Clean Up" installed, but the program I'm trying to remove is not listed. So how can I remove the item from "Add/Remove Programs"? FYI the app is "SatScape", and I'm running XP Pro.

Download MyUninstaller by Nirsoft (43kb) http://www.nirsoft.n.../utils/myuninst.html
It's faster than Add/Remove programs, and it has the feature you need.

That audio one makes no sense whatsoever. And while we're on the subject again, Megaupload has gotten pretty difficult recently :D

As for the megaupload's captcha, try setting a background color to black (it's a transparent gif). It becomes quite easy!

          Set-captcha-to-black bookmarklet:
          javascript:(function(){var%20newSS,%20styles='td%20{%20background:%20black%20!%20important;%20color:%20white%20!important%20}%20:link,%20:link%20*%20{%20color:%20#0000EE%20!important%20}%20:visited,%20:visited%20*%20{%20color:%20#551A8B%20!important%20}';%20if(document.createStyleSheet)%20{%20document.createStyleSheet("javascript:'"+styles+"'");%20}%20else%20{%20newSS=document.createElement('link');%20newSS.rel='stylesheet';%20newSS.href='data:text/css,'+escape(styles);%20document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0].appendChild(newSS);%20}%20})();

          megaoriginal.PNG => megablack.PNG => HNZ1

Ahh, ok. i thought it would be easier to integrate with a hta.. right now i just have a batch file that calls the hta, pings 1.1.1.1 for a couple of seconds then starts pin to desktop.
Would it be easy to modify PTD to launch an hta then apply the settings to the window?

          Yes it would.

Hey Scancode, Sorry to bother you again. I'm trying to replicate the behavior of your P-T-D in my .hta.

I'm trying to group it in the following code to resize my window..

          <SCRIPT Language="VBScript">
          Sub Window_Onload
             leeway = 225
             window.moveTo (1440 + leeway), 0
             window.resizeTo (1680 - leeway),1020
          End Sub
          </SCRIPT>

Is there any way replicate the functionality in my HTA? (clearly i know more about html then visual basic :P )

You can call Win32 API dlls from HTA using DynaCall... but it´s kinda complicated. Why not using a launcher exe instead of the HTA?
