Has happened to me more than a few times:
Using the pro version a site/IP gets blocked, another pc has the free one and visits that same site moments later. Scanning the pc with the free version finds nothing. I guess this is one form of false positive and as valuable as MBAM is I don't like this.

I could be mistaken, but I think the IP protection works only in the Pro version.  Thus, a PC with just the free version will not get warnings or IP blocking.  Also, Malwarebytes blocks IP addresses and ranges of IP addresses that are known to be used by malicious websites.  It's perfectly possible that the site you went to on the PC with MBAM's free version shares its IP address with malicious domains, and thus going to that IP address could result in malware being transferred to your computer, but it also could result in nothing bad happening.  The blocking is not really a false positive if the IP address is also used by malicious sites.  However, you can always instruct your copy of MBAM not to block a specific IP number, if you're confident that nothing bad will happen, even if the site shares its IP address with bad guys.  And if you're convinced that the IP address is not being shared with bad guys, you can also report the blockage as a false positive on the MBAM forum website.  They will investigate and either change their listing so the IP address is no longer blocked or explain to you why they feel it IS a malicious IP address.  Either way, they're good about explaining what they're doing, and you can override their judgment if you wish.

One nice thing is that it is easy to use only on demand when you need it, rather than having it stay resident, which makes it a good secondary tool to have in addition to a resident antivirus.

That's true, but according to the Malwarebytes folks, the software is intended to supplement, not duplicate, the work done by an antivirus program.  That is, Malwarebytes is designed to ignore many of the things a good AV is expected to catch and to find the malware that most AV programs often miss.  That's why I feel that the Pro version's always-on protection is worth the modest amount it costs.  You don't get this if you use MBAM only every now and then.

System Restore has saved me more times than I can count; I have nothing but positive things to say about it (and have heard nothing but positive things).

Thanks so much, SKA, for posting this link.  If I ever needed another reason not to move to Windows 8, this is it.

I just want to say that I've used InPaint since version 3, and I'm very happy with it.  It's the program I turn to first when I want to remove elements from my photos.  Almost always, it does what I need.

General Software Discussion / Re: Why I switched from Thunderbird to The Bat!

$9 for a Thunderbird (which is, as proven in my initial posting, buggy bloatware) with a few dozen built-in plug-ins? Are you serious?

No, $9 for PostBox, which though based on Thunderbird, seems to me much faster and more configurable than Thunderbird.  And though I'm normally the kind of email user who should love The Bat, I found PostBox more to my liking.  But if you're happy with The Bat, that's fine.

Have you tried PostBox?  It's based on Thunderbird but I find it more configurable and more to my liking.  It's not free, but the price is $9, which is almost free.  It's not perfect, but it's as close as I've been able to come to reproducing the features I love and depend on in Mulberry.  Mulberry has been my primary email client for more than a decade.  It's still the best client I know for IMAP.  However, it has issues with graphics and with unicode, and it hasn't been under active development since perhaps 2005.  I tried The Bat several times, but I never got to the point where I could configure it to do what I wanted.  I also tried Thunderbird, but though I kept it on my computer to deal with an occasional email that Mulberry couldn't handle well, I was never tempted to use it on a regular basis.  It was too slow, for one, and I couldn't configure it as I wanted.  I tried PostBox not long ago and quickly found myself impressed.  It's now my backup, replacing Thunderbird.  One of these days, perhaps when PostBox gets more robust tech support and/or an active user's forum, it may even replace my beloved Mulberry.  Even now, though, I'd recommend PostBox to anyone looking for an alternative to Thunderbird.  (BTW, I too prefer plain text email, and PostBox permits me to decide whether I want plain text, basic HTML, or full-blown HTML, and it's easy to switch back and forth depending on the needs of the specific email message.  Another thing I like about PostBox is that it lets me set any number of mail folders as capable of receiving new mail, so it works well with the way I've set up my sieve file.)

How can users prevent Flash cookie tracking?

For some time now, I've been using the Firefox add-on Better Privacy to deal with Flash cookies, and it seems to work well.  It allows you to select which Flash cookies you'd like NOT to block, or just to have it block them all.  It can inform you about the Flash cookies it blocks each time you close Firefox, or just do its business and not bother you.  Your choice.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does the browser Opera suck?

8) in the search box of http://www.wordreference.com, to start the search I must press Enter twice, one Enter doesn't work (it may seem a trifle indeed, but considering that I use very often Wordreference, and adding together the points 1...7, such drawback becomes a further bother anyway)

I use WordReference all the time and never noticed this.  I now see why:  I use the search icon next to the box rather than hitting Enter.  I don't have to hit the search icon more than once.  However, you're right--if you hit Enter, you have to hit it twice, even if there's no confusion about which word you want to search on.  In Firefox, you only have to hit Enter once.

General Software Discussion / Re: Does the browser Opera suck?
« Last post by cyberdiva on October 10, 2012, 06:16 PM »
1) when I click on a link, when I want to go in that website, Opera often asks me the permission. That is just annoying and useless as my operation is not a redirection by an intruder website: it's a direct operation by the user, it's the will of the user.
It's still more deplorable when the destination address is similar to the starting address. For example, if I am in http://www.microsoft.com/x and I want to go in http://www.microsoft.com/y it's obvious it's not a redirection by an intruder website

2) if I choose certain websites from the address bar (like http://www.winpenpack.com and http://www.vipreantivirus.com) Opera brings me to that website. It's right. But I see nothing. I see a white empty page

I use Firefox as my primary browser and Opera as my secondary, so I'm by no means an Opera fangirl, but I'm really puzzled by what you've described.  I can't remember ever being asked for permission when I click on a link in Opera.  Also, I clicked on the two links you provided in point #2, and Opera took me there with no problem.  In both cases, I saw the site, not a white empty page.  This makes me suspect that there's something on your computer (or perhaps in your Opera settings, if you've changed those) that is causing these problems.  FWIW, I'm using Opera 12.02 on Windows 7, but I've used Opera for years on Windows XP as well, and I simply have not encountered the problems you've described above.

Several years ago, I switched to the free version of PDF-XChange Viewer, which had been highly recommended to me.  I've been very happy with it ever since.  I see that Gizmo's Best Freeware site lists PDF-XChange Viewer as its top pick:

Linkman is my favorite bookmark manager and one of my very favorite pieces of software.  I see that it and Cacheman are both featured on Bits du Jour today (Sept. 28, 2012).  A 2-computer license for Linkman is available for $14.99, which is 62% off.  That's a great price for a terrific program.

Giveaway of the Day - Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012
http://www.giveawayo...burning-studio-2012/
Notice that for those wanting the $9.99 offer for Burning Studio 11, it's available by first downloading and installing Burning Studio 12: "Upgrade to Ashampoo Burning Studio 11 at a discount from within the Burning Studio 2012! Buy at $9.99 instead of usual $49.99."

It kinda makes you wonder about their numbering system, but....  FWIW, I think I'll stick with the free version of Burning Studio 10, which has served me very well.

Your about a couple weeks late if your looking for the special $9.99 price.
It may be that that offer has expired, but Ashampoo runs offers quite frequently.  In fact, if they still offer a free version of Burning Studio, install that.  If you do, I bet you'll soon be getting very substantial discount offers from Ashampoo in your email.

I too have seen pop-up ads in Ashampoo's paid products--in my case, it was Photo Commander.  That really turned me off.  Ironically, I've been using the free version of Burning Studio 10, and I don't recall seeing any advertising.

Just took a very quick look at your site.  I'll definitely return for a closer look, but I thought I'd offer one comment now.  I see that "Helps for the computer novice" is in large letters on your site's home page.  Like 40hz, I'm a bit bothered by "Helps."  Why not just change that to "Help"?  I like "Help for the computer novice"; I don't think you need 40hz's longer suggestion, but I agree with him about "helps."

Good luck with the site!

Perhaps someone has already mentioned this, but Directory Opus Light is on Bits du Jour today (Monday, Sept. 24, 2012) for $15.32, which is 48% off the regular price.

Thanks, Barney and Curt, for your input.  I wound up buying the Pro version last night.  Barney, I think the Pro version can use multiple source images, though I won't really know until I try.

excelent  ;D

not a chance, no one here will fall for that

PS you spelt excelent wrong

Next time put a : after PS, wiil you?

you're smiley's incomplete
Shouldn't a sentence start upper case, even in english?  :-\
"You're" should be "Your" (unless you have some strange relationship with John LeCarré's character George Smiley  ;) ).
295
Thanks very much, Curt, for your helpful response.  I now see the point of getting the Deluxe version, but I think I'll compromise and go for the Pro instead.  More than once, I've bought software in a burst of enthusiasm and then wound up not using it. :-[  I don't know that that will happen this time, but I feel more comfortable spending $30 rather than $50.
296
Barney, thanks for your message.  I'm still wondering, though, whether you could have made "acceptable" morphs (which is how you described your results) with one of the less expensive versions of FantaMorph.  Like you, I'd love to create a morph of a family member from infancy to maturity.  I know I could do that with the Deluxe version, but couldn't I also make an "acceptable" version with, say, the Standard version?
297
-looking at the comparison, I have decided that Deluxe is the only one of the three versions to have. And because I cannot afford that one, I am not buying any of them...
Curt, what are the features that you feel are vitally important that can only be had in the Deluxe version?
298
I'm really tempted by the BdJ FantaMorph offer.  I wish I knew whether the least expensive version would do the job.  I don't really have time to try it out before the offer expires.  Anyone have experience with the least expensive version, or know why that might not be a good choice?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Postbox 3 - $9.95
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 14, 2012, 07:39 PM »
I was very excited when, thanks to this thread, I started looking into PostBox.  I was so pleased with a few of its features that I went ahead and bought it after just a few hours of trying it out.  Duh.  I never learn.  A few hours later, I found I couldn't get a couple of things to work, and that's when I found out that PostBox can't be bothered offering tech support.  They've put up some "trouble-shooting" advice, and if that doesn't work, well, too bad for you.  Or rather, too bad for me. [BUT SEE BELOW]

Addendum: Ah, me of little faith.  This morning I was going through some of the PostBox Help information, and to my surprise, I saw a link to a form I could use if I still hadn't found what I was looking for.  So apparently there IS some possibility of real tech support after all.  Not sure why I didn't see it earlier--perhaps because I was signed in this time and not before?  Oh well....  I should add that I'm still finding features that I like about PostBox and am once again happy to have bought it.  (If I could find a way to delete my earlier grumbling, I would, but since I can't find how to do that, I'll just "modify.")

I think you now need to actually buy the product from Amazon before you're allowed to review it. There was a time when you didn't.
Hmmm....I'm under the impression that you still do not have to have bought the product from Amazon to post a review.  I've looked at a number of different products on Amazon lately, and I recall seeing reviews that specified other places where the writer bought the product he or she was reviewing.
