Living Room / Re: The Emergency Broadcast System ?
« Last post by crabby3 on October 28, 2014, 08:56 AM »
You can't have an EMS on something like the Internet as the Internet doesn't guarantee transmission.

Radio waves are more reliable. Blah. Stuff like that.

How would radio waves inform anyone if they are staring at a computer screen or cell phone?

The internet is already clogged with useless crap... why not a little more?

@40hz

Your Superman video reminded me of Meatless Tuesday with Andy Panda.

My father had this on 8mm film... black and white and silent... pre super-8 days.

This is the first time i have watched it in color with sound.   ;D

Not a national broadcast... but classic... to me anyway

In the US the Emergency Broadcast System *tests* have been around since the old duck-and-cover days and equally useful... IMO.  Teats on a boar?  :-\

Useless or not... shouldn't there be an Internet version as well?  Where most eye balls are these days?

Maybe an annoying crawler that can be stopped or turned off?

For those who might perceive more strongly negative aspects about it, I started a thread in the Basement 911 HATE - hate what you hate or what others like or dislike about it.

Strong stuff

I don't truely hate anything.  Mistrust or dislike maybe.  Not hate.

Why get all worked-up about nothing.

... much cheaper to vent here though... than visit a shrink   ;D

Living Room / Re: The Eagle has landed: Nasa launches free sound library
« Last post by crabby3 on October 27, 2014, 04:28 PM »

Historical audio from Nasa missions has been uploaded to a free sound library.

More than 60 samples have been added to the agency's new dedicated Soundcloud account, but listeners are unable to leave comments underneath the files.

Astronaut communications, including "Houston, we've had a problem" and "the Eagle has landed", can be heard - as well as some more abstract noises made by working spacecraft and debris.

In space itself, sound is unable to travel as there is no air.

I watched Neil Armstrongs step... live (or as live as it was back then) and listened as well-

... one small step for man... one.. iant leap for mankind.  Amazing event.  Shame about the weak G  :-\

Lovely story crabby :)

Thank you!  It wasn't meant to be a blog but it turned into one.

-------------

Epilogue

Kitten Milk Replacer (KMR) powder mix was used for the two newborns.  Mine came in a kit: KMR w/ measuring cup and a small baby bottle.
KMR comes premixed as well.  Both powder and premix need chilling but the powder warms quickly when mixed with tap water.

kmr-powder-28-oz.png

Your newborns first few potties will be the color of this border... as you softly rub and gently pinch their lower belly.  Mother cat stimulates by licking - I didn't  ;D

-----------

As with some human families i learned on the first kitten, Squeeky and was well prepared when Crabby arrived.
Didn't have Squeekys KMR any more but a fresh batch is better.  Still had the bottle and custom-built Mother Cat Snuggle Box.
The MCSB was just a shallow cardboard box w/ heating pad and a folded bath towel on top.

...and the 9-11 memorial?
@crabby3: In answer to your Q, because he started getting flamed, @Stephen66515 self-censored his rather uplifting and positive 9-11 memorial post, and so I reposted it here: Re: Thoughts in remembrance of 911

For those who might perceive more strongly negative aspects about it, I started a thread in the Basement 911 HATE - hate what you hate or what others like or dislike about it.

Thank you for the link IainB.  I pictured the towers coming down as I read.   :(

@Stephen66515  I found all of it very moving.  Maybe you aroused a sleeper-cell .. .

A certain member on the forum decided to go on the offensive and attack the thread.  Due to those reasons I decided to self-censor the thread and have it deleted rather than the possibility of a flame war being on the DonationCoder boards. :)

...so your DC's DiNozzo?  The class-clown with a serious side as well?  An IT Pro with a sense of humor?  ... unheard of..   ;D

I actually thought I had posted that one in my personal area and not in living room haha, no wonder I couldn't find it  ;D

Aha... so someone can post to the forum directly from My Personal Area?  Interesting.

No.  One must copy and paste from Personal Area in order to move it to a live forum section.

I have a tendency to have a lot of DC tabs open at any one time and sometimes multiple "New Topic" tabs for mocking up posts before making them, and sometimes I don't realize I have posted something live that should have been a test post.

Okay... thanks.  In my early days at DC I (thought) I was in My Personal Area when I clicked post but sent it to the forum and the wrong thread instead.

Just so I understand:  If I'm in MPA and click post... it will come up looking like a forum post but stay in MPA?   :tellme:

Yes.  The Personal Area is a private area ONLY you can see. - It looks and feels like the public forum sections, but nobody else can see in there.

If you want to move something from that area to a public section, then you can do so by copy/paste method, or by speaking to mouser and asking him to move it for you.

You can contact mouser via PM | E-Mail | or Visit us in the Live Chat Room

Again thank you very much for a clear and informative reply.

It wasn't about what I said that made me want to remove it...

This thread has peaked my curiosity.  Can you say what it was about... maybe a PM?      Silly Topic Allotment?   ;D

I think I was messing around posting silly ASCII emoticons ((╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)) or something of the sorts and obviously it meant nothing so mouser deleted it as it wasn't a "topic" haha

...and the 9-11 memorial?

So, who is your favourite Doctor?

Sorry for your loss Mouser.  The passing of a best bud is always difficult.  I'll miss Crabby when she desides to leave. (most things are up to her)   ;D
Although 18 years is considered elderly... some live over 20.  I attribute this longevity mostly to proper diet.

---------------------

I didn't want to clog Saffrons thread with my blog.

NOTE: I am not a vet or even a doctor; this is just my past experience with 3 indoor cats.

My first cat passed at age 2 from kidney disease.  Smokey was a purebred Persian.  There were known health issues with Persians including kidneys.
The vet said feeding her only canned food may have weakened her system as well.  After-the-fact advice always sucks.  >:(  Sorry Smokey

Squeeky left after 17 years (from boredom i think).  She was an abandoned stray kitten.  We met when she was about 6 hr old.
Dry cat food with an occasional soft-treat.  I used a very basic auto-feeder (bad idea).  She became 22 pounds of fur and bad attitude.
She may have lived longer if I hadn't used the auto-feeder.  :(  Like some humans... she ate when she was bored.  Sorry Squeeky

Finally there's the crab.  Crabby is 19.  Crabby is 10.  She was an abandoned stray kitten as well and we met when she was about 1 day old.
No auto-feeder and dry cat food only.  She's a lean mean couch potato.  She gets fed 1 cup, whenever her bowl is empty, about every two days.
She also gets some stuff i eat.  :-[  Assorted meats, processed cheese, ice cream and an occasional 1/4 cup of 2%.

No shortcuts with Crabby but she seems to know what's good and what isn't.  At times I'll trash some of my food that she won't eat.
No auto-water either.  She plays with the water, splashing all over the place, until the gallon's empty.   :-\

---------------

For those who may want to switch to dry food...

Always make a change in diet gradual - per several days at least and sometimes over a few weeks if your cat is fussy.

Start by mixing a very small amount of the new food with your cats old food, and make sure it is well mixed.

Only increase the amount of the new food slowly.

We have peanut, peanut butter and mint M & Ms, why not raisin M & Ms? Wine tastes better chilled, so do chocolate-covered raisins.

Raisinets have been around forever.  No candy coating though (M & Ms).

Living Room / Re: Malware blocked at DC !?!

Hopefully it was a coincidence.

I don't use a router.  Maybe an IE-9 Internet option?

...- but it begs the question of how did those requests get to your computer in the first place.

I know I'm infected with something.  There are Internet Options that cannot be changed.  I have file folders that are not visable.

I had the FBI scam infection a while back.  MBAB's Chameleon killed the process and gave me internet access again but i haven't addressed any damage.

I ran unhide yesterday but found no changes.

I have to ask.

Why would you not use a router if at all possible? They usually include a decent firewall capability to protect your machine from exploits floating around the public network, including inbound UPNP exploits that would trigger malwarebytes like so.

Its just one extra level of protection, allowing you to keep your stuff on a clean network while still being able to access the rest of the world from behind the safety of that firewall only allowing stuff in that you've asked for.

(Edit)

Also no. Internet Explorer has no ability whatsoever to filter your internet connection, other than by relying on sites that Microsoft has programmed it to blacklist.

You need at minimum a decent third party firewall software or a good router to protect your system. The default Windows Firewall is usually wide open by default with several key ports open that cannot be closed including the often abused port 139.

One word:  Procrastination.  I have a router but it's still in the box and so on...   :-\

I do have Kaspersky Pure 3.0 and it's firewall.

I found these yesterday and unchecked 'em

2014-windows firewall.png

I ran Rkill yesterday as well and it terminated 4 processes

The MBAM alerts were every other day, Wednesday then Friday then..., see what happens today.   :)

BTW  Thanks for your thorough description, your 3rd paragraph of how to exploit other peoples computers, for any hackers out there.

You had already made your point.  ...overkill.

Note- the screenshots show that the attacks were directed at port 1900, which is in fact the port used by UPnP.

It is completely possible that this is in fact unrelated to having been browsing DC, and is just a coincidence that the messages popped up with DC open.

That's why I had asked for screenshots of the message first thing. It just makes it so much easier to figure out where it came from when you have the exact message in hand.

What I would suggest is checking your router settings and making sure upnp is disabled. A lot of routers have it enabled by default because it was supposed to offer a convenient new feature to let your firewall adjust itself on the fly, but in practice it proved positively dangerous to use. Malwarebytes would know this, and block inbound upnp requests- but it begs the question of how did those requests get to your computer in the first place.

Hopefully it was a coincidence.

It means there is no attack or malware hosted on or coming from DonationCoder.
It could mean that you just happened to see these alerts while you happened to be browsing the DonatinCoder forum.

--

Another thing to check is if this alert pops up when you view certain posts on the forum -- it's always possible that someone has a photo in their signature or in a post that is linking to another site and that that site is pinging your machine when you load it.

'I'm not clear what you are saying...' you're not hosting if it's a photo or link here?

I will keep track of where i see it and what tabs are open.

Some user avatars are hosted on external servers for which DC has no control over (Like mine...it is hosted on Imgur.com and NOT DC).  Linking & Hotlinking are NOT the same as Hosting.

After checking the IP addresses above, I came up with the following:

80.82.78.166 - Takes to a website which just has the text "Oh hi there" - The IP is hosted by the ISP: Ecatel LTD

89.248.168.46 - Resolves to offshore20.tronichost.com - Also hosted by the ISP: Ecatel LTD - However, when checking the website for content, the resolution link takes to a "This website may be for sale" and the IP takes you to an Apache2 Test Page.

Neither of these IPs are connected or affiliated with DonationCoder.com AT ALL.

Thank you for your very clear explaination.  It was my understanding that hosting meant providing links.

Some user avatars are hosted on external servers for which DC has no control over (Like mine...it is hosted on Imgur.com and NOT DC).

So if the Imgur servers go down... your Batsman disappears?  Bummer.  But i understand what you're saying.

Neither of these IPs are connected or affiliated with DonationCoder.com AT ALL.

I didn't think these IP's were affiliated with DC.  More like a member trying to disrupt things and make it unfriendly here.

----------

This past Wednesday was the first time MBAM blocked anything here.  What changed? What's different? The only thing i could think of was DC membership.

'I'm not clear what you are saying...' you're not hosting if it's a photo or link here?

It's up to the individual user where items are hosted. The IPs from you screen shots are from Amsterdam...DC is hosted in (I believe) Seattle, WA.

I'm still learning computer terms and what they stand for.  :-\  The terms are often different from one *geek* site to the next.
Like bad driving directions,  ...follow this road and take your first left...,  but the road ends in a cul-de-sac.  It's confusing.

Amsterdam is more precise... thank you.  My link just said Netherlands.

-------

FWIW  If i was surfing, found DC, opened a topic and malware was blocked... I wouldn't return or recommend.  Which would be bad.
I've learned a lot here and also picked up some really cool freebies.   8)
