Are you talking about opening the folder that contains the application's .exe file (eg Word.exe, Excel.exe), or the folder that contains the opened current data file (eg Document.doc, Workbook.xls)?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: move small dialog windows to cursor position
« Last post by AndyM on April 24, 2010, 03:20 PM »
It has been working well, for a long time.  Once it a while it still does something odd, usually moving a window that shouldn't have moved (too big).

If that sort of thing happens again, I'll try the new code.  Might anyway.

but i want to copy text, images and formatted text!
If you can select the image or formatted text, can't you copy it with a hotkey?

Actually, it's pretty much the same, except that now it works on multiple screens!
If I don't have multiple screens, should I stick with the old version?

i need for utility, which will monitor for changes in clipboard and then clipboard will changed (for example, i copy text from browser Opera), information (text, formatted text, images, etc) automatically copy in opened document Microsoft Word in background and also add linefeed character.
help me?
If items you were interested in only showed up in the clipboard because you copied them with a hotkey (default Ctrl-C), then it would be easy to write a script that:
  1. copies the selected text to the clipboard
  2. remembers the current window and activates the open Word window
  3. pastes the text
  4. adds a linefeed
  5. returns to the original window

Say you assigned the script to Shift-Ctrl-C.  Then anytime you hit the hotkey when text was selected, it would be automatic.

Monitoring the clipboard for text that showed up there automatically, or via a mouse-click (right-click,copy), would make this more complicated.  But if you were always going to use the keyboard, this would be easy.

me too (agree w/ Curt)

I didn't enter a contest.

I clicked a checkbox because someone who started a thread here asked me to participate in a hypothetical something or other.

No survey here will give you info on anything but how we fill out a survey.  Even so, if you wanted to get closer to how people would truly respond (or how they think they would respond), you need to set up the survey with more detail and background.

But if you really wanted to know, offer two lotteries, one with a $250 prize, one with $1000, and make it so you can enter one or the other but not both, with no cost to sign up.  And see what happens.  (It'll only cost $1250, maybe a government grant?)

Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics

Interesting, thanks.

I have a 24" monitor (1920x1200) with virtual desktops that I use with my laptop.  I have an idle 2nd identical monitor that I used with the laptop when I was working in two offices.  I couldn't use both monitors easily at present anyway since the laptop has only one external video connector.

But it's still not looking attractive enough to me to try to hook up that second monitor.  My brother has two 24" monitors, keeps a particular database open on one most of the time for reference, and swears by it.  Times I've needed something like that I just hotkeyed or clicked to a different desktop and back.

If I could easily hook up the second monitor, I'd probably do it just to experiment.  But I'm guessing I wouldn't like moving my head that much  :)

It's interesting that multiple monitors work so well for so many of you.  I'll stay tuned to see if there are angles I'm missing.

With Mouser's setup (identical monitors), it wouldn't matter which monitor you ran a particular virtual desktop on.

But with your setup, I imagine some virtual desktops would be set up for the portrait monitor, some for the bigger landscape monitor, etc.

I use virtual desktops (have since OS/2 days), so a combination of virtual desktops and multiple monitors sounds particularly interesting.

nudone, your monitors are not all the same size and orientation.  Would you run particular destops on particular monitors?

I'll second Firefly. Love that show. Such a shame it only made it 1 season.
Yes, but at least Joss Whedon and crew came back to wrap it all up with the movie Serenity.  (also streamed on NetFlix).

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

The first season, a short one, is more than decent (if a bit cheesy at times), the second better, and by the third season you see why this is one of the most entertaining series ever, 145 episodes worth.

The first person who views all 145 and reports back here gets all my DC credits.  I'll consider them well spent in the interest of spreading cultural treasure.  ;)

Does everyone have only one taskbar in the middle (main) monitor, or does the taskbar extend across monitors, or does each monitor have it's own taskbar?

i usually have 4 identical 21" monitors, 1900x1200, all landscape, controlled by 2 graphics cards.

2 wide by 2 high?  no, you said to have one in the middle.  So 2 high in the middle and one to either side, or 4 wide?

... i got the 17" portrait as it was almost the same height as my main 24" and also was wide enough to view the standard(ish) web browser width of 1024 pixels. ...

...this 3rd monitor has allowed me to set up a screen for running wider windows on

i do use the 24" like a two monitor setup too. so that's a bit like having 4 screens in total.

hmm, I have to say this sounds useful

Are there many context menu choices you need?  Or do you mostly use Delete and one or two others?   If so, maybe some specific keyboard or mouse shortcuts would be a different approach.
select the file, just delete
for example, I have Delete assigned to a mouse rocker gesture (left click-middle click).  So in this case after selecting the file I'd delete it like that, no menu or keyboard required.

Or you could make a custom menu with the commands you want in a macro program.  I've no experience with this but at least one if not both of the macro programs I use (Macro Express and AutoHotkey) can do this.
298
I understood your original query to be different than this.  I understood it to be that you wanted the Explorer context menu no matter what other application you happened to be working in.

If you had several Explorer windows open, on which unfocused window would the menu work?  Desktop?

General Software Discussion / Re: Double click tabbar to maximize?
« Last post by AndyM on March 18, 2010, 08:42 PM »
Autohotkey is freeware.  There are scads of scripts at Autohotkey.com.  Autohotkey is powerful but not so easy for many things.

Macro Express is shareware, easy to use for easy things.  By the time you've learned how to use it (pretty short learning curve), you'll know how to assign WindowMaximize/Restore to a specific mouse click.
