Living Room / Back to basics : virtual memory and page file ...
« Last post by joiwind on June 15, 2011, 07:03 AM »
This is going back so far that I can't remember so much about this question, so I'm asking for someone's advice. I'm quite aware that it's probably a stupid question, but they're the best aren't they ...

I have virtual memory and page file set up on this PC and for some reason the virtual memory is hardly ever used whereas the page file of course is (see attached screen capture).
I have searched various sites about this and many seem to confuse the two, some even saying it's the same thing, i.e  virtual memory = page file.
So what I'm asking is : as the virtual memory never seems to be used to it's full extent, in fact far from it, should I reduce the size and if so how do I go about it ? The idea being to free up resources.
Thanks.

I've been using MonteCarloHosting for many years - they are really friendly and helpful and very reactive when you need help.
Apart from reasonably priced hosting they also register domains : MonteCarloHosting

General Software Discussion / Re: Cleaning out old dll files - advice needed
« Last post by joiwind on June 05, 2011, 08:45 AM »
Yes, my thoughts too in fact. So why did I want to do this? Well I ran AnalogX's DLLArchive and it found more than 40,000 (I didn't do anything, just checked), and it seems to me that quite some of these dll's are loaded unnecessarily the same way that codecs are loaded even when you don't ask for them. I do install/uninstall lots of apps to test them and during a recent Spring cleaning I began to wonder how many dll's were left over - that was the motivation for this question.

I do use Revo Uninstaller most of the time but it's slowish - more than CCleaner's uninstaller.

So I'll take your kind advice and leaves things alone - thanks.

I'm looking for a tool that can safely identify and backup then clean out old unused or obsolete dll files.
I am looking at AnalogX's DLLArchive and Nirsoft's RegDllView but I'm not feeling very easy about it, I know that CCleaner can do this to some extent but does anyone have any other suggestions - even to say NO, DON'T DO IT !

To completely save state and restore on next power up
Isn't that what's called 'hibernate' in Windows???

In the OP he says he is wary of it...

FreeCommander does too : both for files and folders.

pilgrim-online - another suggestion, though a bit late (especially after skwire's hard work...) : ImageOpen

I don't know skwire.
The pop-up window has been open on the desktop all day, it is now 23h15 here and the last update noted on the pop-up says 8h29 pm (i.e. 20h29).
Again, don't get grey hair over this !

skwire - it seems to happen only when the pop-up window is open and no difference if the window is in focus or not.

Perfectly working, thanks skwire.

One thing that has happened before here is that if the 'Start minimized' option is checked when loading the app then the main window appears only as a small vertical slice of the title bar - if unchecked then the window loads normally. But this may well be, and probably is, a local glitch !

Thanks skwire - it works fine.
BTW I only mentioned the problem because it had been mentioned before ...  :P
My opinion is one of, "is it really that big of a deal to manually refresh it?"  :tellme: Furthermore, just because a device comes out of hibernation doesn't guarantee that there is a network connection.
: perfectly true, it is no big deal but it is less annoying.

Living Room / Re: Science Fiction and Fantasy Reading List
« Last post by joiwind on May 02, 2011, 10:50 AM »
Yes, Lewis is one of my heros too (along with JRRT gws ( = goes without saying)), he said somewhere that his trilogy was strongly influenced by Lindsay's book.

There are also the novels of Charles Williams - in particular The Place of the Lion - these novels are even more 'religious' than those of Lewis but that depends how you read them, that doesn't bother me, some might say that they are quite old-fashioned but for me that just adds more charm.

And of course, as most people know, Lewis, Tolkien and Williams were friends and colleagues and members of a club called the Inklings.

- This may be a bit beside the point but in view of very recent events, it could be useful for some to read or re-read A Voyage to Arcturus to help reflect on what is the nature of evil and what we should do, or not do, about it.

Is it ? Or is it just a local problem on my PC ? It's been on 503 for days.

Done, voted for Quinn.

I must say that some of the others are very good too, they are all of a very high standard.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone testing Daminion Media Manager ?
« Last post by joiwind on March 30, 2011, 12:39 PM »
Well, Daminion seems a good attempt at what I want as a image organizer - I'm not saying it's the best because it's not, but I'll keep it to see how it develops - however it's a bit slow and sometimes takes a while to redraw thumbnails. One thing I like about it is the smallish db size and it not being java-based, also I very much like the ergonomic layout.
I've tried :
exifpro - don't like the layout
IDimager (not free)
and a few others which I won't mention as I find them lamentable. At the moment I'm testing :
Cloudatag which (although it comes from beyond the silk curtain) seems pretty good as a simple tagger and organizer, very fast and apparently stable but of course I don't use the remote cloud option,
and StudioLine PhotoBasic which is more powerful but looks promising.

As for your last question : "other document types...", I use Tag2Find (no longer developed) which is great for my vast collection of letters and docs but not for images as it does not integrate a viewer.

Thanks for your curiosity ...  :)
